What plants do you not like & why?! **okay! I get it, having photos of the plants I’m talking about is what the people want. I just don’t have photos of plants that I don’t own 😅 I normally add footage of the plants I’m talking about, but in this case it didn’t make sense since I only had like 2 of the ones I talked about. I’ll be sure to include photos of the plants going forward where I’m able to tho!

I completely agree about the philodendron lickity split! It’s a beautiful plant that I once really loved, but after my plant got thrips for the second time I put it outside and have never looked back. So sad, but like you said it’s not worth compromising the rest of my collection for that one plant. 🤷🏻‍♀️

On the frydek, I've found that if I put my terracotta plant on a saucer full of rocks and then put liquidirt on the rocks (so it can feed itself), it stopped the suicide leaf thing. I had no idea a frydek was that thirsty. She's up there with my zebra and china doll. 😁❤️

Here's me washing dishes, listening, agreeing with all the ones you mentioned... Then you come to pitcher plants... I had to pause it because I was laughing so hard when you said they're a bit "phallic" because when I look up from the sink my *ENTIRE kitchen window* is covered in pitchers!! I have 4 glass globes on the sill full of spaghnum moss and growing out of each are random varieties of pitcher plants. The vines cover the entire window. There's probably 40 pitchers staring at me in varying shades of red and green and spotted. I never thought phallic. Now I can't unsee it!! 🤣🤣😂😂 I called my husband and now he's hysterical too! He said, I knew you liked them for some reason! 😆 They're actually my absolute favorite plants - so easy! I feed them meal worms that I raise and sometimes a random bug or two that I find on the porch. Once you get some of them you'll look past the weiner look and see the coolness. 😎

@steph6337
@steph6337 3 жыл бұрын
@@sherryporsch9349 I'm not an expert for sure. I'm in central Florida and the window is a south east facing window. All of mine are varieties of nepenthes. I've found using a clear vessel (fish bowl, globe type vase, etc) helps to monitor moisture levels. From what I've read pitcher plants grow in bogs (super wet marshy lands) so experimentally I planted mine completely in sphagnum moss, somewhat firmly packed in there. Be so careful with the roots as most are hair like and black. I watch the moss and water to keep it saturated (dark). The water pools at the bottom 1/2" or so usually. I never use fertilizer. I give each pitcher a half mealworm to a whole, depending how big the pitcher is about once a week or every 10 days. I don't add bugs if the pitcher looks "full" (you'll see like dark water and bug bits in there. If the water is fairly clear it's in need of a bug or two.) I never fill the pods with water, they keep the amount of water they want in there on their own. The exception is once every 6 to 8 months or so I take the whole vine into the shower and rinse the leaves and some water gets in pitchers, some spills, it's kinda messy. In general I wait until the majority of the pitchers are shrively. It does seem to go through a dormant stage but I have yet to determine what time of year that is because it feels continuous in a way too (sorry if that's confusing). I cut off pitchers and leaves only when they are *completely* shriveled and brown. (I'd like to believe the plant uses it up for nutrition.) I hope this was helpful. 🌱💚

I have definitely found as I go through my plant journey that there are plants that I prefer over others. I find that I really enjoy fast growing vining plants. It's just very rewarding to see those new leaves sprout out all the time. It's like confirmation that I'm doing something right lol. I used to really dislike the golden pothos, but now it's one of my favorites. I also really enjoy the vining philadendrons. I'm trying to collect as many different pothos as I can because I seem to love them all. I went crazy at the beginning of summer buying different large plants, the fiddle leaf fig included, but I'm not loving them. I'm trying to find homes for them and I'm pretty sure I killed the fiddle leaf he's only got one leaf left 🤷.

What I did was put it on a window sill that the sun was not facing at all (or in a room far far away from a window but still getting natural light) also I made a mistake to over water it so make sure you just water it once a week on monday and keeping that schedule so the plant remembers. This really helped and now its healthy and growing! Btw I also believe they love rooms with smoke cause my grandmother who smokes alot has one and it's a GIANT.

If I try more carnivorous, I'll probably plop them in the basket with my hanging one & see what happens. Tip for the hanging ones...get that clear bucket thingy that hooks onto your pot to hold water to allow him to keep his feet wet. Mine is 4-5 years old now, despite letting the soil (spag moss) dry out more than ideal occasionally. You actually reminded me he needed water, despite the rain yesterday. And maybe try a fern in with him since they all like wet feet? Mine came with a hijacker fern, and it actually makes the plant look really neat.

Also, for thrips or any other pests really, I find that simply leaving the plants outside during the summer has solved all my pest problems. Well except for fungus gnats. I use mosquito bits for those. If any thrips or spider mites show up, I just use an old make up brush and use soapy water and go to town. I find that spraying them takes just as much time or longer of you are going to be spraying the top side and underside of the leaves, all the petioles and other nooks and crannies of the plant. Gently physically brushing them away with soapy and water seems to be a more efficient use of the time and all that through effort. Zero recurrence this summer once I tried doing that for my plants that stayed indoors.

Loved this video! Great morning giggle! Especially the “sac” effect of those pitcher plants and that they were “in your face” and you are pregnant HA HA HA! Nearly spit my coffee out on that one! I know I have a seriously disturbed mind sometimes, but as I said I enjoyed the giggle. I dislike Aglaonemas, which are really popular and “easy care” well not for me! I have to say that most of the plants you mentioned are actually on my least favourites list as well. I don't keep succulents cause I can't keep them alive for some reason and you're right, many of them just look flat and i find because they are so low to the soil they are hard to water and I end up rotting them. All the string ones annoy me too. Like the string of turtles is so cool but the way they grow all tangled together stresses me out and i find them hard to water too. I also don't like most of the tradescantias... I have one medium sized fiddle leaf but it's super thick awkward shaped leaves annoy me and its hard to position it right because once any of the bottom leaves fall off they don't grow back and then you have one whole bottom side of stem all empty and the thing looks lopsided.

My easter lily is the bane of my existence. It's always drooping and dramatic. I've tried watering more, watering it less, changing up the fertilizer, moving its location, using distilled water, etc. It's the bane of my existence. Last week, I to re-pot it to see if that would help and, as I was detangling the roots, I found some gardening fabric wedged way up near the base. It took some time and effort, but I got it out. After getting it back in a new pot with fresh, sterilized soil, I was pretty optimistic I had resolved our disagreements. BUT NOOOOOOO. Apparently, the whole experience was just too traumatic, and it went into shock. All the leaves completely died off. I cut it back to basically nothing. Hopefully, the root system is strong enough for it to bounce back. I'm half hoping that it just dies though so I can replace it with something else. To make matters worse, whenever I go over to my mother-in-law's house, she has two easter lilies on her desk that are absolutely THRIVING. They look so lush and perfect that I thought they were fake for the longest time. She hardly tries with them either; it's infuriating. Rant over. Anyway . . . . . hope everyone else is having a splendid day :))))))) Rant over.

Red spots on fiddle leaf figs are caused by UNDERwatering, not overwatering. They should be allowed to dry partially between waterings but should not be allowed to get bone dry. Letting them dry completely can cause the red spots on new leaves and can also result in smaller leaves.

Some plants that folks adapt to indoor really are better left outside. Caladium are stunning lining a shady walkway or patio in mass. I got thrips on my Alocasia Polly twice before in exasperation I plopped that pot in a lonely corner on my patio. To my surprise it has has been very happy in the Texas heat and has doubled in size from my neglect. some pitcher plants with those red turgid little things are definitively phallic, you can pick different ones, some of them looks like little "toilet's bowls", it is up to you ! Anyway I agree with you, some plants are boring (like fiddle leaf fig) and when they are difficult to manage, this is too much. Some are fantastic and beautiful, like ferns or carnivorous plants or calatheas and caladium, but they become more anxiety inducing as time goes by. I bought a ZZ plant in July, everybody says that they are so easy, but I almost killed this ZZ, by watering it ONCE ! since then I don't know what to do and it is mind bubbling to me !
