Hydrogen Peroxide is the perfect medicine for houseplants! The extra Oxygen in the Peroxide provides plant roots a boost of oxygen so they are able to absorb nutrients more quickly. It also can heal root rot & kill pests that can be harmful to indoor plants. I particularly love using Hydrogen Peroxide on my indoor plants to treat thrips because thrips are such a pain to get rid of! Houseplants are such a joy to keep & Hydrogen Peroxide can really aid in healing unhealthy plants. Yay!

If you make a H2O2 mixture for future use, don’t put it in a clear container. There’s a reason it’s in an opaque brown bottle; it reacts with light to break down into H2O and O2. You’re spritzing expensive water instead of an inexpensive disinfectant.

Bleach is the same way. Once hit with sunlight or mixed into a spray bottle for cleaning it is only going to keep it's sanitizing properties for 24hours. This is not only because of the exposure to sunlight, once it comes in contact with any organic compounds. Which is why they always say to clean any surface before sanitizing with bleach. Bleach also has an extremely short shelf life even before opening the bottle which makes bleach quite unreliable. Hydrogen peroxide also has the same problems. It begins to decompose before even opening the bottle. It decomposes slowly into water and elemental oxygen when exposed to light, and even more rapidly in the presence of organic or reactive compounds. But you can test hydrogen peroxides effectiveness by putting a little on skin and seeing if any bubbling occurs. If it does then your in luck. This is a very good subject I'm happy someone else has brought it up. This is why I no longer use bleach. In many cases it has already become inactive before you get it home from the store the shelf life is extremely short.

Harli! I have had a plant that I frequently think about just giving up on and throwing out that I brought home after finding it at my work, abandoned, on a bookshelf behind a bunch of binders, in hopes to bring it back to life. It has struggled for months.. and like I said I’ve frequently thought of giving up on it. I watched this video last week and immediately watered it with hydrogen peroxide. I just noticed today that she has sprout a new leaf! I just had to say thank you, I would never have thought to do this 🤗💚

U should give it a pinch of worm castings or forest soil to innoculate it, it'll get healthy much more quickly than it would with just the microbes floating in the air. Additional tip for this great video: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) rapidly breaks down into water (H2O) especially when exposed to light and when diluted. The disinfecting effect comes from the liberating of that oxygen, which leaves water. This so great in that it’s not toxic and leaves no toxic residue on surfaces, however, it also means that you must mix up these formulas right before using them, they don’t store for more than 24 hours, and I’d avoid using a clear glass container, too, as that contributes to rapid degradation. For direct treatment of soil, not plants, I’m a fan of more sparing use with a sprayer stuck into the original dark brown container.

I did this to my orchid but I used 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water (watch orchid girl on KZbin) -- I bought the orchid on clearance with droopy leaves that just hung over the side of the pot. I removed all the decayed roots, soaked it in the solution for 24 hours and then drained it the next day. Within 2 days the plant is nice and perky again. The hydrogen peroxide neutralizes the soil so you will have to change out the soil because it will be sterile, but it also kills bugs eggs and stops root rot in its tracks. I treat all my Echeveria succulents with a hydrogen peroxide rinse straight from the box store so I don’t bring pests in my home and to stop any root rot going on. But with my Echeverias I saturate the soil in the pot and let it drain out right away. When it’s completely dry again, then I transplant it into new soil.

@kathleenmurphy2379
@kathleenmurphy2379 4 жыл бұрын
@@lunacadence6050 it sounds your elephant ear plant is deficient in nitrogen and in magnesium. I would suggest you put a spoonful a teaspoonful of Epsom salts in a gallon of water that will help the leaves green up they need magnesium to make the chlorophyll which causes their leaves to be green. And a nitrogen deficiency is usually that yellow outline along the edges of a leaf. Also elephant ears be they alocasia or colocasia lose their oldest leaf as they're getting a new Leaf especially if they're deficient in nutrients. To make the new Leaf they take the nutrients out of the old leaf because they have to constantly grow. I have some videos on my channel from last summer wear I bought it up my elephant ears and my caladiums. I use a weak nutrient solution weekly on my orchids and then use the leftovers after the orchids soak on my other plants. The nutrient solution not only has some type of Miracle Grow with the first number the middle number the last number higher than the rest along with a Cal Mag solution called tell Magic... And in that I also have seaweed emulsion fertilizer some micronutrients Epsom salts and in the soil when I repot something I always put osmocote fertilizer and with it if I have worm castings that also goes in the soil.

The syngomium was totally fine and free of gnats, but the prayer plant later developed yellowing/browning on the edges of a few leaves, similar to fertilizer burn. The hydrogen peroxide bath was awesome! Then I followed up with the Neem Oil spray you have in your other video and 24 hours later I've only seen one gnat (not sure how he escaped but whatever). Hydrogen peroxide is great.... I used it on a plant that had root rot.... The plant was dying out droopy dead leaves so i mixed up 1 OZ (2 TBS) of hydrogen peroxide and 1 QT of water and I didnt wet the dirt but I dampened the dirt with it then let it dry completely out and then used the rest of the mixture into the plant... The next morning the leaves was green and beautiful and looked so happy.... 😊 i was so relieved!!!! I threw away one plant b4 trying this that had the same problem before i tried this and now regret throwing it away! Do you know how long after using the peroxide i can give the plant food?

@Kayden Jenkins that plan is also called a Swiss cheese plant and you can get one if you go to a nursery in Louisiana called Almost Eden Nursery. I saw one that was shipped to I believe it's Peggy's plants on KZbin that I subscribe to. And she subscribes to my channel. She got a wonderful narrowleaf one that was gorgeous. So I ordered from that nursery and I also bought a Ric RAC cactus a golden Hoya and a variegated Hindu rope. I'm going to do a video on the plants are received from them and post it on my KZbin channel next week. The Swiss cheese plant I even took cuttings from it was so long so I'm going to put them in the original pot to make it Fuller they have wonderful Roots so the cuttings are ready to be potted up with the mother plant

all potting media (not actual soil) is sterile anyway. you get fungus gnats from outside when you use fine wood/bark based potting media, which tends to sour. i dont use any media like that now and have had no fungus gnats. so without improving your potting media, gnats return and you treat only symptoms of poorly draining medium with the peroxide. i use coir based media and sometimes a bit of perlite. bark media is ok for orchids but only nugget size with all fines flushed out.

I think it was the nursery where I bought the plants because got both the watermelon pep and the calocasia 1 month ago and from my small plant knowledge its really hard to kill a plant that quickly if you think about it that's only like 3 watering cycles. Additionally the watermelon pep and calocasia from my understanding are completely different plants and its fishy that they both developed rot about the same amount of time when all of my other plants are thriving. I'm calling the nursery and seeing if they have any sort of return policy even for store credit would be nice :) Thank you so much for your fun and interesting videos! Im such a fan!

FYI: Cinnamon is a natural fungicide and a natural rooting hormone. I use regular ground cinnamon...I take plant cuttings, dip in cinnamon and plant. I also sprinkle around my plants. Also honey, aloe vera (cut leaf open and use gel) and cut up willow sticks work: take a few willow sticks and set in water for 24 hours, then discard the sticks and use the willow water. Also this may shock some of you but you can use your own saliva as a rooting hormone! Yes your spit! Saliva contains water, acids and enzymes.

Hello Harli, thank you, this info is very helpful. In fact this is how I felt brave enough to us peroxide on my plants. I actually use it with my mouthwash every night too.😁💚🍀🍀🍀🍀 This is my DIY Critter Spray Recipe 1 Tbsp - Peppermint Dr Woods Castile Soap- 1 Tbsp - TeaTree Dr Woods Castile Soap- 1 Tbsp- Neem oil 1/2 70% Alcohol 2 Tbsp Peroxide Fill the rest with water. I made up my own recipe and I have eradicated mass thrip infestation and I have never really had spider-mites. The critter spray also keeps my cats away from my plants because they don't like the smell, I guess. My recipe 1 Tbsp - Peppermint Dr Woods Castile Soap- 1 Tbsp - TeaTree Dr Woods Castile Soap- 1 Tbsp- Neem oil 1/2 cup 70% Alcohol ** 2 Tbsp Peroxide (I've even used 3 TBSPs) (I use 3%) I get the peroxide and the alcohol at the dollar store which is good for me because I have so many plants. Fill the rest of the container with water. I use Brita water that I have lowered the pH to 6. I use the 32 oz brown peroxide bottle and added a sprayer. Works great!! I wash off the plant first because I'm also afraid of DIY critter spray direct contact burning my plant or its roots. I spray the critter spray all over the plant, leave the spray on for 15 min, then rinse it off. Then I wipe the leave off with a paper towel with a bit of Neem oil on it. The thinner leaf plants only 5 minutes. The reason why I think it works so well is because I spray the critter spray once or twice a week around the perimeter of the plant and in the planter tray. I do try to avoid spraying directly on the plants, but as close as I can. Especially with plants that have water in the trays. I spray that 💩💩💩everywhere. I mean in the plant area. Well actually I also spray around the perimeter of my home when I get a lot of spiders or ants. I even spray in the back and around the plant area which really keeps them away. I started doing that because I had an ant problem. They don't like it either. That's how I killed all the thrip on my monstera's; they are notorious for thrip problems. I'm not sure which is harder to get rid of, spider-mites or thrip. I also use a humidifier which apparently spider-mites hate. I have over 75 + indoor plants that are super healthy and they are all in semi-hydroponic substrate (mostly Pons)...no dirt. Thank you for the very helpful info.💚🍀

Mosquito bits don’t work use Gnatrol for fungus gnats (found on eBay for about $20) and peroxide kills the good microbes in your soil, only spray it on the leaves. For root rot you should rinse and trim off the black mushy roots, soak them in the peroxide mixture for a few minutes and repot with fresh soil. Recharge (Amazon) adds beneficial microbes and bacteria that will fight off the root rot. I’ve used it by itself with success for early stage root rot, you just add 1/2 teaspoon to the water. Both products last a very long time so the price is worth it.

@@cstevens8788 I brought the gnats in from a plant I bought at Home Depot. And I also bought about 20 plants and it was getting bad!! It’s been 5 months and I still see a gnat here or there. I spray neem oil a few days after I water on the top which I purchased a bottle on Amazon and followed instructions. I also bought sand and most of my plants have a top layer. I have some issues with the sand because I feel the soil doesn’t dry out and I get worried about root rot. I bought a water meter to check regularly. I did the dying out too and that’s hard bc I water on different days. I literally walk around with a spray bottle with alcohol, dawn and water to spray any I see flying around, tried the ACV too. It’s been a battle I think I’m finally winning. When I bring in a new plant I drench with the neem spray or water with water and peroxide to make sure. It’s been so annoying!! Once I feel the gnats are fully gone I’ll start removing some of the sand on some plants.
