This gentleman spent a career making artists sound great. Thankfully he has left a collection of his own greatness.

The first piece in Symbiosis might be one of my favorite pieces in all of jazz, and his arrangement for Bill Evans Trio and Symphony Orchestra might be my favorite jazz album. But I also loved his arrangements for early Tom Jobim instrumentals. Out of curiousity, I went to his wiki page and was shocked at all the great albums he was behind, including George Benson's "Breezin'" and Michael Franks' "Sleeping Gypsy". Great musical sensibilities.

Ogerman... a true master... and a long standing hero of mine. You wouldn't believe that the music which preceded this most beautifully structured and haunting section could be so hard on the ear... just too difficult for me to assimilate... and music should not be difficult for it to engage the senses no matter how clever its structure may be.

Try the cd album 'Two Concertos' by Claus Ogermann. Claus performs the piano himself , and the sublime story the strings tell , is other-worldly gorgeous !

I only heard Symbiosis a decade ago but I had the album Motions and Emotions maybe half a century ago. And it was an ear opener. I love Ogermann's work. His sound is unmistakable. The lushness, the sus2 dissonances,...Thank you for this analysis video. Please do more.

If my history is correct, Claus Ogerman did the string orchestrations on George Benson's Breezin' album in 1975. He also did the string orchestrations on Cal Tjader's Warm Wave album.

the minor 9th is really well used here. although he is constantly using the interval, it never gets boring. On the contrary, it gives me chills every time. i ve been obsessed with 9ths since hearing this recording. Wish i had heard it sooner, when the teachers were saying to avoid the minor 9th! I’m definitely not avoiding it any longer!

I remember when this album came out in the 1970's in vinyl 33 1/3. I was immediately taken by it. And for laughs, I loaned it to a fellow musician (Bobby Goldsboro's bandleader) - who forgot he had left it in his car during one hot summer day (we were in Nashville) and the interior heat curled it like a potato chip. Of course he replaced it with deep apology. We had a good laugh over that.......I also remember (sadly) driving to a studio gig on one of the Nashville freeways and the radio announcer said that Bill Evans had died, and they immediately cut to an interview with Brubeck who commented, with praise for his talent, and lament, on Bill's life and contribution to jazz and music in general.......
