There was no better live band in the seventies than J Geils. They would whip a crowd into a boogieing frenzy. You would leave a concert in a sweat. The live musicianship was super tight, Peter Wolf was a great front man. Never missed them when they were playing anywhere within a hundred miles.

I wept the day JGB went "Top 40". "Full House" is one of the top 10 live albums ever. On that album, the pairing via a perfect segue between "Hard Drivin' Man" and "Whammer Jammer" sends shivers down my spine and goose bumps erupt all over my body.

Wow, I can’t believe that you played whammer jammer! I was in the army when they released this song and I had a killer stereo system in my room. I would play this song full volume and the whole barracks was jamming and dancing on their bunks! What a great memory!

@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT I'm not saying a lot of eighties music isn't great. That's my era too. But the video-emphasized change in music made a lot of seventies identified bands make weaker more pandering, watered-down and dumbed-down, trend-chasing music, designed to support and be secondary to visual information and image by then. J Geils Band made worse music. They were playing catchup to the industry. 70's was DEFINITELY their heyday. AC/DC, still great, but far more formularized after Mutt Lange - bigger sales, but popped up and watered down by comparison to the grittyBon era. ZZ Top - brilliant in the seventies, far worse in the eighties. Corny pop anthems that get old quick and throwaway novelty tunes for casual fans. Background music for fun videos. Musically boring by comparison to their best. Van Halen "1" was the explosion that put them on the map. 1984 NEVER would have established them with the energy needed to put everybody back on their heels, but was a.good pop record. Heart got far worse musicalIy in the eighties but had a couple good hits. If you saw the context of my earlier quote, you'll know that I was referring to 70's bands who started to alter their sound to compete in the eighties, and made inferior stuff, for them. I wasn't referring to acts that got big starting in the eighties.

@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Further examples of people who were great in the seventies but let the eighties trends water down their musical mojo: The Stones, The Who, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Scorpions (got more anthemic, but musically weaker). As far as Michael Jackson goes, Thriller was amazing but not as good afterward and Off The Wall ('79) was just as good but less glossy and grittier funk. Plus Michael released probably his all-time catchiest hits with his brothers in the early 70's with Motown. Wilt Chamberlain himself might give you argument that some of the greatest music that ever happened in the 50's/60's/70"s.

Ok, I erased what I wrote when you guys wanted us to say who our favorite harmonica player/song is. I'll go with the late, great John Lee Hooker playing with Canned Heat. He called their harmonica player, Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson his favorite harp player (I don't really say harmonica, lol). The song is called Boogie Chillen No.2. You actually heard a few seconds of it in the Blue Brothers movie. He was the street musician that you loved and asked who it was and he was playing this song. It's 9 minutes long but it's worth it, Blind Owl goes off and totally jams like he's playing a guitar the way he solos. I won't say he's better than Magic Dick but I won't say the reverse either. Btw, as I write this I have 2 Blues harp s next to me so I can play along with a song if I'm so moved. Anyway, you won't regret listening to Boogie Chillen, try it, you'll like it! Lol and peace! Edit: I just checked, the song is 11 and 1/2 minutes long but please, don't let that scare you. We liked long songs back then and they really cook on it, bye again!

Stevie Wonder can play multiple instruments, but he also excels on the harmonica. "For Once in My Life" is yet another of his classic songs and harmonica friendly. An early Beatles hit, "Love Me Do" also has the harmonica prominently featured.

The only live concert I liked better than J Geils who I saw twice in the late seventies was Pink Floyd. Early JGeils rocks. The later stuff was too pop and they lost me, not because I don’t enjoy pop but because I knew what they were capable of. Musta Got Lost live is a must see and reaction to.

J. Geils is a great band but they are well known for being a "Jam Band". Their live songs are always so much more amped up... if you can listen to a live version of their song... especially their stuff from the 70s you gotta do it. This is one of my favorite songs but the version I love best is from their FULL HOUSE LIVE album. It is a medley of Whammer Jammer/Hard Driving Man. One of their best live songs is "Musta Got Lost" with the Intro... you gotta have the intro... from their album Blow Your Face Off.

HARMONICA! The great James Cotton was the harmonica man for all the famous old blues players starting in the 50s. He even had a few good albums in the 70s. My fav was called 100% Cotton (1972) Play the song Rocket 88 for a high energy song with lots of harp. Play the vinyl version...nit live versions. He is actually known for a more slower style that like Clapton's guitar playing...he is famous for his style of playing harmonica. NOTE: On this album and many others, James guitarist was Mat Guitar Murphy...who was the guitar player in the Blues Brothers movie you watched. Aretha Franklins husband. :) I was blessed to watch this band a few times in small bars in Canada.

Interesting choice. The three J. Geils Band songs before this were from the early 80s, when their star arguably reached its highest point. This song came much earlier, in 1971, and was a trace off their second studio album, The Morning After. Some others you might want to check out are "Must of Got Lost", "Give It To Me", and "Looking for a Love". Lead singer Peter Wolf also had some success as a solo artist, and I think you'd like his songs "Come As You Are" and "Lights Out". For a truly AWESOME harmonica song, check out "Midnight Rambler" by the Rolling Stones.

There are only a few really great harmonica players out there, and Magic Dick from J. Geils Band is one of them. Along with John Popper from Blues Traveler, Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite, and at times Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, he's okay but he's not really in the class of the others I mentioned. One of the greatest live groups of all time, bar none. None of their studio albums come close to their live shows. The Blow Your Face Out double album is incredible. Try Lovitis for a real blow out or Nothin' But a House Party and you'll get an idea of how amazing they were live. Great choice.

Back in the day in the San Francisco Bay Area we were standing up front with out hands on the stage for J Geils. After Magic Dick played this he tossed the harmonica in my direction, I caught it and put it in my pocket. True story and so glad you did a reaction to it.

This is from Pre Commercial times for the band. I had their original album and loved the whole thing. I think it was just called J Geils. Another great hand me down album from brothers and sis. They toured a lot in NJ. Wished I seen them live. Heard they were incomparable in concert. Lots of energy and just FUN.

Harmonica legend John Mayall “Room to Move” the live version is the only one I’ve ever heard. I got to see the J Geils band back in the early 80s. There was no way the audience was going to let the band leave without Magic Dick playing Whammer Jammer. Love you guys keep up the great work! They’ve got so many great songs you’ve only listen to like the 80s hits you gotta go deeper into the album, bloodshot, etc. to really know J Geils band. “It ain’t nothing but a house party” another J Geils great.

For harmonica, my first love is Toots Thielmans' closing theme for Sesame Street; his sweet chromatic harmonica on Bluesette is also iconic but not the stomp you all are looking for! Stevie Wonder also played a chromatic harmonica and was the instrument he first had a hit playing as a kid. That hit, "Fingertips" doesn't get played anymore but it gets my feet tapping.

"WHAMMER JAMMER" is from THE J. GEILS BAND's second album"THE MORNING AFTER" (1971) featuring MAGIC DICK (real name RICHARD SALWITZ) on harmonica (also called the "blues harp") . Check out JAMES COTTON BAND's album "100% PURE COTTON" (1974) on the BUDDAH RECORDS label featuring a nearly seven minute jam of "CREEPER CREEPS AGAIN" . This song sounds so similar to "WHAMMER JAMMER" ! Some of my other favorite songs featuring the harmonica are "2120 SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE" by THE ROLLING STONES off their "12 X 5" (1964) album . Also some songs by THE BEATLES namely "LOVE ME DO" and "THANK YOU GIRL" come to mind . NEIL YOUNG plays the harmonica on "HEART OF GOLD" from the "HARVEST" (1972) album . In his early days of recording BOB DYLAN played harmonica on several different songs . "TRAIN , TRAIN" by BLACKFOOT from the "STRIKES" (1979) album starts off with a very cool harmonica riff . The late SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON (II) and the late HOWLIN' WOLF played a lot of harmonica in many songs . DEFORD BAILEY was the first African American inducted into the COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME for his unique harmonica playing !

FYI: at their 10 yr anniversary show at NYs Palladium towards the end of the show, lead singer Peter Wolf, feeling no pain, was handing magnums of champagne to the front rows, one per row left to right, and each row seemed to finish it before it got to the last seat. Of course, Wolf was taking large gulps of each bottle he handed out and by the 3rd encore, the band walked off but Peter was literally so gone somebody had to come on stage and lead him off. Their live album title 'Blow Your Face Out' was no exaggeration.

Saw J Geils Band at the 14th St Academy of Music in Manhattan in the Spring of 72. Whammer Jammer was the Encore, the place was Rocking! The opening act was an unknown piano player named Billy Joel, "Piano Man" came out a couple months later! The Biggest Act in NYC that Spring was Don McClean performing "American Pie' at Carnegie Hall
