I'm 17 and driving my brother, he was15, to his friends house. He puts this tape in as i pull to a stop sign, and he tells me his way is clear. As i start to pull through the stop sign the words FREEZE FRAME blasted through the speakers. I slam on the brakes to avoid what i knew was an oncoming car. There wasn't one; the road was empty, and my brother burst out laughing To this day, 40+ years later, he'll still bring it up.

That keyboard with the "flipped switches" was a Yamaha CS-80. One of the most iconic synthesizers of all time. Used by Richard Tandy in Electric Light Orchestra, Paul McCartney in Wings, Vangellis, Doug Johnson in Loverboy, Steve Porcaro in Toto, and so many more. Those flippy switches control the sound oscillators, filters, and other sound shaping parameters. It is a collectors item now and if you can find one that works it costs more than $35,000. When they die they are nearly impossible to fix because Yamaha used proprietary chips that no longer exist.

@@racafritz - So many Juno 106 synthesizers are no longer functional too. Eating was definitely the right call. So, MTV came on the air in August of 1981 and I think my grandparents got cable shortly before this because I have a very vague (I mean, I was 3) memory of knowing about MTV and anticipating it. This song came out in 1982 and it along with their 1981 song “Centerfold,” and a song called “Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes (I loved it when I was little but don’t recommend-it’s another “Rock Lobster”) were the first videos I recall seeing on MTV. And as you can imagine, as a little kid, I thought the paint slinging everywhere was the best part! I think it became an indelible memory because of how novel it was-I remember standing directly in front of the TV to watch and my mom and grandparents pulling me back a little ways. I watch these videos now and can’t believe how OLD they look when I remember them being the newest, coolest thing. Edit: Jay, I’m pretty sure that’s an alto saxophone which is smaller than the more common tenor saxophone. But someone can correct me if I’m wrong-I studied strings back in the day, not woodwinds! My understanding of wind or brass instruments is minimal-like, I can usually identify the different pitched instruments (there are several types of sax with different pitches as well as flute, clarinet, etc) but I can’t tell ya much more!

Freeze Frame was an album that divided fans of the J. Geils band. The album was mostly written and produced by keyboardist Seth Justman & lead singer Peter Wolf. It divided their fan base. Most fans of their 70’s R&B based songs hated Freeze Frame. I discovered them on Love Stinks. This is the album that I LOVE!

This song incorporates one photographic term after another, starting with the title, and continues with: reflex, wound, snapshot, flash, focused, test strip, proof sheet, spotlight, zoom lens, close up...

Still one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Mr. Wolf and the boys are great fun. Thanks for the reaction.

This is one of my favorite 80's song. So catchy and fun to dance to. Great pick & reaction!

Watching you vibe to the music was the same thing we were doing back then. The music and the beat just set you to dancing and that's all we cared about. I hope you explore more of the early to mid 80's dance music. I miss it so much !!

Jordan, 80's feel with killer piano solo. THE THE: Uncertain Smile. You're gonna fall off your chair.

This band blew me away live here when they opened for YES! This was in the early seventies. They are astounding live so full of energy! They made yes look terrible! I bought their albums! Love Detroit breakdown and Give it to me! The harmonica player was a genius! So under rated as a band should have been much bigger!
