Harmonizing Religion and Human Rights (Dec. 5, 2018)

December brings the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a United Nations document that lays out an individual’s inalienable rights. To mark the occasion, a panel of religious leaders will explore what the scriptures of some of the world’s major religions have to say about human rights. How can we align religious life with human rights? What role should spiritual leaders play in promoting human rights? And what can everyday people of faith do to defend human rights and encourage mutual respect between people of different religions?

You even have access to more of Imam Omar's talks, which you can watch. "The unknown is always feared", so look at the whole story, the bigger picture, where religions are being taught by media and news outlets, rather than scholars or people who actually follow the religion; gather your information from an appropriate source. The first human rights doctrine was Shariah Law at the time there was no other law that protected women, slaves and prisoners. Shariah law was the first law to give women rights over inheritance, land ownership, protection from infanticide, marriage. This may be true for the Bedouin tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. But in the Roman Empire and in the Persian Empire, women already had more rights and freedoms. These are the two high cultures that Islam conquered from the Arabian Peninsula. Apart from that, even the Sunnah says that the Prophet's first wife, Kadijah, was heir to a caravansary, and she was the boss and the Prophet was her clerk. This shows that women could achieve something BEFORE Islam arrived.

Another thing that many people in the West do not know: Islamic culture has built the most long-lived and widely distributed slave trade system. Take a look at the transport routes, where most slaves were brought over the Middle Ages: it was the Islamic caliphates. In Europe it was the highly acclaimed Al-Andalus. The trading structures were already present for centuries before. Western slavery and colonialism were a big crime, but colonialists have finally abolished slavery in Islamic countries and on the African continent. This has prevailed above all Britain, and partly France and the Netherlands, and at sea, the American fleet was involved in the suppression of the slave trade.

Omar is such an educated and eloquent speaker, and he knows exactly how to articulate his thoughts which are derived from his belief in Allah in accordance with the teachings of Prophet Mohammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. I love the way he portrays what a true Muslim should be like, which is by following the commandments of Allah and the sunnah (way) of the Prophet Mohammad. That's why Omar always quotes the Quran. Faith has to be derived from the true message of the religion that "God" has chosen for his creatures. and that religion is without a question is Islam. it's the only teaching that is complete and answers all questions and concerns without hesitation or human interpretation.
