I interpret that as the forest chose Chirb, and the lily, before the ceremony even happened. So it made him lose his sapling so that you would give him the lily.

@@sarad2487 Okay, Cholmek is slightly off, but Wikipedia says there's also a tree called "hemlock". Otherwise Chirb = birch, Recad = cedar, Niep = pine, Lempa = maple.
