Harold Washington Inauguration April 29 1983

Digging through some old footage for a documentary I stumbled on this pool feed recording of the first inauguration of Chicago Mayor Harold Washington April 29, 1983 at Navy Pier.
The video includes the role call of alderman (it was an actual city council meeting) and the last formal action by outgoing Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne. Byrne was Chicago’s first female mayor. Washington was Chicago's first African American mayor. Roman Catholic Cardinal Joseph Bernardin gives the invocation. Ron Magers from WMAQ is the moderator.
Washington’s term in office was marked by conflict with the city council, an episode known as the Council Wars. Washington died in office following re-election on November 25, 1987.

Wow... thank you for sharing this. This is my great uncle and my grandmother (the lady in the pink jacket standing next to him during the prayer at 6:14) and seeing this video really shook me. I've never seen a video of her before so to see her moving and smiling like this just really hit me.

Seems like he was a popular candidate and mayor - for the few years he held office (despite shenanigans fo the aldermen), looks like the machine was not too pleased with his win.

Before Lori Lightfoot, it was Harold Washington. The only good mayor other than Richard M. Daley.
