I remember going to an air show with my dad as a teenager in the late 70’s in Florida. While watching a harrier doing its demonstration when at one point while hovering over the runway it touched down on its belly with its gear up (for I don’t remember how many seconds). The pilot realizing his mistake or the control tower, then applied power to lift the plane off the runway and hovered the plane off the runway again for a period of time. I assume checking the aircraft systems for damage. The pilot then lowered the landing gear and gently touched down on the runway and taxied away. I think I took a picture of it in a scrapbook somewhere. Although I don’t know if I still have it or it got thrown out over the years.

It's wonderful seeing the Harrier displaying again. It was an aircraft way ahead of its time. There was only one aircraft that had everyone watching whenever it appeared at airshows - The Harrier. My all time favourite aircraft of the jet era (apart from the TSR2) Excellent video Dafydd.

What a gorgeous and iconic British machine, so valuable during the Falklands War. I was driving past the end of an airport years ago with the sun roof open, the horror of a Harrier passing over me at less than 50ft on approach, it stunned everyone in the car immediately. How did I keep that car on the road I still don't know! Thanks so much Dafydd & all the best. What a great pilot.

Why does the UK have a habit of getting rid of great aircraft and replacing them with bland multi-national conglomerate rubbish? Harrier, Tornado, Nimrod, Lightning and so many others I could mention
