I'm always so confused when people react so virulently to subjects like this. Especially when the title of the video should make it clear the video will be discussing gender theory, gendered approaches to sociology, and intersectionality. There's no bait and switch. (I mean, how dare an education video attempt to challenge embedded societal ideas that arise from patriarchal structures). Don't let the haters get you down. This was a dispassionate, largely unbiased approach to gender and gender conflict theory (and didn't even touch on the more thorny issues). Well done, Crash course.

I'm sure you put a lot of time into making sure you had an accurate, and informative video. I commend you. Although, my nit-picking DID pick on something. It's something that rarely applies, but I understand that the feminist goal of equality would also oppose matriarchy as/if it occurs, as well as patriarchy. That's mostly because feminists tend to live in patriarchal societies. I would also like to thank for the note of mentioning women AND feminists as separate entities, because not all women are feminists, and not are feminists are women. Also, another thanks for talking about more than the gender stuff when talking about Martineau. It's valuable to know that there are female scholars who study more than just gender, as it brings them out of those ditches in all areas of study. We should spend time remembering people not just for their sex, but for what they did to contribute to their areas of study.

For those of you who do not understand, sociology does not further the disparity between groups; rather, it recognizes that over history until now society has created separate groups, the social statuses across them, being unequal. Yes, unequal. And with the inequality being so widespread among so many different groups, the groups become real on the basis that group members face inequalities unique to them; Blacks: segregation, Women: unequal pay, Veterans: lack of health resources, etc. Sociology, seeing this, hopes to remedy those social groups by recognizing the group differences in unequal treatment. If you dislike the video or sociology because if mentions these differences, then you do not care about equality, you ignore the problem and become it, thereby.

@orenashkenazi98137 жыл бұрын
So does that mean it's the second one? You don't think sexism, racism, or any of the prejudices commonly discussed as part of intersectionality exist, so a theory combining them doesn't make sense?
@orenashkenazi98137 жыл бұрын
So it isn't really intersectionality that you have a problem with. Internsectionality is just the idea that multiple times of discrimination can over lap. I'm guessing by your profile name that you believe that men suffer discrimination, and that white people suffer discrimination. In that case, intersectionality would refer to the overlapping discrimination faced by white men. None of that is true of course and you're living in a fantasy universe, but that fantasy still allows for intersectionality.

Very agreeable way to discuss it. I think the reason people are so opposed to Intersectionality is caused by the assumption that it's extremely black and white when it comes to what provides advantages and hindrances especially in a way that feels completely devoid of nuance in the individual's experience. I don't think it's fair to say that without question one group always has an inherent privilege over another in every societal case. There's a myriad of possibilities and experiences, so Intersectionality should reflect that.

How do you define "identity"? Specifically, I'm interested in two possible dimensions to be considered in the definition: a) Is "identity" one individual thing including many aspects (e.g. "my identity is a CIS-gendered white female etc.")? Or is "identity" one thing included in some larger whole (e.g. "my identities are CIS-gendered, white, and female etc.")? b) Does (or should) "identity" include biological categories (e.g. sex and skin color) as well as social categories (e.g. gender)? Concerning (a): If "identity" is the latter, can people not claim a potentially infinite number of identities, and that can be individually appealed to when any perceived inequalities between the large number of identities are discovered (and even if most of an individual’s identities might by some standards be privileged, it only takes one to identify as a "victim")? Or are there some boundaries to what can be an identity (to appeal to)? If "identity" is the former, this problem doesn't seem to follow (at least not as easily), as the one identity is a unique mixture of many things; some aspects socially perceived as positive, some negative, some neutral, and many of them moving, thus forming a dynamic aggregate. Concerning (b): If our identities include many things that are socially (if not individually) constructed, doesn't that especially imply that the first concern about (a) might follow? At least if some boundaries to what genders, for example, can be constructed, are not defined. And insofar as we identify with biological categories, that cannot change, how productive is that if the goal is to diminish the social problems based on biological categories? And furthermore: insofar as we have any group-affiliation categories in our identity (be those biological or social affiliations), are we not upholding said group-affiliations and thus possible group-conflict between them?

Gender and sex is very much connected. What roles sex takes in the society depends on it ability. Example Many people associate cooking with female but why most of the cook are male "why?" because men can work more without getting tired, men can work at night, men don't take maternity leave etc. Distinction without discrimination between the two sex is important for a healthy society.

There seems to be a false dichotomy here. Gender is either absolutely biologically determined or socially/culturally constructed. Both factors play part in complex relationships and ignoring any of them is wrong. Steven Pinker wrote a great book about this tendency to ignore one or another of these factors known as The Blank Slate: Modern Denial of Human Nature.
@Lill0fD5 жыл бұрын
The like to dislike ratio is fascinating to me right now. Not once have you mentioned the gender issues at the time. I had to remember it all. In hindsight, it was a very damaging time for feminism in general and not because of the "not-a-real-feminist" argument people like myself hid behind to ignore actual issues. The media coverage was really damaging at the time, focusing on caricatures instead of the actual problems being presented. Truth is, men had a fear of matriarchy. Taking every word of feminism and the caricatures being presented and thinking of the motivations being a shift in power rather than a stabilization. I remember a lot of the arguments back then, and I will admit in embarrassment that I believed some of these people claiming that these feminists didn't aim for equality and were focusing on the wrong things. In a way they were right about focus on the wrong things, but that wasn't the feminists, it was the debunking narrative. Let's take the ban bossy situation for example. The focus in reaction was the sillyness of banning the word, and... yeah... the banning of the word is silly. In hindsight though, the ban bossy was trying to talk about the real problem women have to face of stereotypes and gender discrimination. The word itself wasn't the problem, but ignoring it was not a solution. There is a true problem where words are more harmful to a minority voice than to the privileged. I'm a white male, so I have the advantage of being able to laugh words away and not have to worry about my future. Us being called bossy is not something that can affect us, even in the most sensitive of levels. Meanwhile, as a small girl, being called bossy is something that does have more consequence as a female. That word does become a weapon and does push them down from being able to be stronger than they can be. If boys got called bossy and, let's say cried about it at home... it's more likely a father figure would describe the tears towards that as silly. The stereotypical boy would have some sort of support, even if it seems minor. You'd think a girl would have something similar at home, the only difference being gender. Without making assumptions, I'm just going to bring up that a nagging wife is a stereotype that is still presented in modern media. Yet that being said... at the time, that reality wasn't the focus. The focus was that some silly woman was doing something silly. The reaction was to shut it down, treating this problem with behavior therapy when it needed psychoanalyzing.

We already had an individualist culture that promoted individual characteristics over the class or group distinctions of the past. We are now trying to emphasize the differences between groups in spite of that philosophy because somehow that will get us back to that philosophy, but better.

This is such a coincidence. I am writing an essay for Critical Psychology, where I am kind of challenging the methodologies of mainstream Psychology, which led to inequalities in society. I am mainly focusing on gender and sexuality. I have to submit tomorrow morning and I am really stuck. Then suddenly I get a notification from KZbin about this. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!

Maybe Catalan (my historic ancestry) culture is more free-thinking but I also think we had a lot of revisionist history or focus on only America/British history on the matter.

it is the kind of behaviour that promotes hatred and suffering, instead of tolerance and open mindedness. It is the reason we have polarization of thought and ideas. The world is infinite and gray, but the human intellect is small and simple, it must classify in simple manner. I will tell you this - i shall always be intellectually humble. I know there's a lot of hate for this video for a controversial topic, and I don't wan't to help or hinder either side (probably 'cause I'm a Nihilist) but there's only one error I can truly point out: Feminism is *not* the opposite of Patriarchy, it's an opposite of the combination of Patriarchy *and* Matriarchy; egalitarian is the opposite of exceptionalism. A law abiding is not *the* opposite of a murderer, they're the opposite of thieves, murderers (etc.) Honestly, I *DO* believe feminism's true *aim* is for equal rights, but you're not helping your case by [essentially] saying "feminism doesn't fight against men for women's rights only" and then following up with "The polar opposite of equal rights for everyone is equal rights for men only" Honestly, apart from that, the video was pretty good Edit: Law-abiding citizen (Law abiding makes no sense :D )

some people seem to automatically dislike this series and I legitimately can't understand why, I disagree with third wave feminism but they are educating about subjects of sociology and to an extent feminism, they aren't telling you to believe this or that, if they do then you can dislike the video if you so wish but you cant plug your ears and say "lalala" everytime somebody says something you dont wanna hear
@katiewaters3787 жыл бұрын
Guys. Whoever disagrees with anything in this video doesn't realize that this is about as unbiased and objective as sociology can get. All of what's discussed in these videos are sociological theories, events in history, and simple vocabulary with some talking afterward to illustrate the new vocabulary. Look closely enough and you'll notice that there is no political agenda here, it only serves as proof that society is so polarized right now that people have difficulty even accepting truth as truth in this discipline as well as many other domains of modern society. If sex and gender are the same thing and both biologically determined, then why would the two different but similar concepts have different names? You're more than allowed think critically over how you feel about something, but if you just jump to conclusions and immediately reject something as falsehood or wrong, it's obvious you're missing the point of anything. I like to say that people aren't entitled to their own opinions, they are entitled to their own *EDUCATED & RESEARCHED* opinions.

There's definitely a difference between male and female brains. The liver and the brain perform two different functions, so that analogy doesn't quite work in the way it was intended. Reacting to male and female-specific hormones in fetal development and after birth will change the way the brain grows. Even outside of physical traits (of the body, not brain), these hormones affect the way an individual thinks, male or female. Even life experiences can physically change the way the brain is shaped. If more neurons are localized to a specific point in the brain, that is a physical difference as neurons are composed of matter. Now to what degree these experiences and traits can change an individual, is currently immeasurable. Without a proper method of measurement, we're making deductions from an unknown premise, which renders the question of the difference between male and female brains as unknown. Also, differences in male and female livers have been found in mice (see source below), which could suggest the same in humans. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. "Genetic Basis For Gender Differences In The Liver." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 17 October 2003. .

I'm non-binary and support this video for more positive reasons than negative. People need to chill out and realise that this video is concerned with the gender pay gap which is an issue. Sure they made some mistakes but is talking about the inequality between males and females really offensive? I wish they'd raised inequality for non-cis people but oh well.

Logic is rational, science was our attempt to create knowledge about the world from logic and evidence found from logic. Recently it's also been used as ideology to some people. Science is amazing, but people should understand why it's so great instead of just going along with it.

Very well stated, apolitical, and yet delicately acknowledging and dodging the modern social issues plaguing "feminism" as an amorphous identity rather than "feminist theory" as a sociological subject. I actually understand "intersectionality" now, which before I thought was some vague notion that political movement had to involve all disadvantaged classes, but now realize it's more how our culture socializes us to have normative patterns of thought regarding people of different "classes". I disagree with the Marxist interpretation of an advantaged and disadvantaged class though, as I feel everyone is disadvantaged in some way by modern social structures.
@holdenmcgroin96877 жыл бұрын
Some commenters can't seem to get past the very mention of "gender" in the title. Glad you did! I believe this video is mostly focusing on the nature of society norms during Harriet Martineau's lifetime, not ours. A lot of those norms still exist in certain religions, social structures, households (including my own parents').
@019KADESH7 жыл бұрын
If feminism is about equality of genders why it only has the etymology of one single gender? It should have another name. It would be like labeling "black-supporting" to mean "against racism" or "pro-poorism" to mean "the fight for equality among social classes" or "doggism" to mean "the movement and belief that all species of animals should be treated equally and respected and not eaten".
@Ghaos7 жыл бұрын

+Jamie Bai that is NOT a justification to label a humanitarian movement with the name of a single sex. That leads to the opposite, now women oppresing men
@pollysmith59437 жыл бұрын
Well I don't know about other people, but I call it feminism because things that are feminine are often looked down on. For example, a woman may wear traditionally masculine clothes without anyone giving two damns, but if a man wears a dress, then it's something humiliating, degrading. Because why would you want to look feminine? As if femininity is less desirable than masculinity. I want femininity to be considered good, because it's an important part of our society. The things men are shamed for are ridiculous. It's also a nod to the feminists of the past, because their fight should be remembered. Anyway, I am a humanist, egalitarian whatever. But I am also a feminist, and these terms overlap as far as I'm concerned.
@IBMboy7 жыл бұрын
I think criticism of feminism should start from here, a simple sociological review of the history of feminism. There's a lot to argue about, personally I disagree with feminist ideas but this video was as objective as it could from the sociological perspective.
