NMAAHC founding director Lonnie Bunch considers Harriet Tubman’s hymnal to be one of the great original objects the museum will display. Bunch tells Scott Pelley how he became aware of it.

It wasn’t even just being a conductor, as if that wasn’t enough, I mean she was the first known woman to lead a umilitary attack and liberation of hundreds, she was a nurse/medic to soldiers of all colors and creeds in the Civil War, led a network of spies and gathered critical intelligence for the Union, was an incredibly influential activist and lecturer, a suffragist, founded schools, then ran a nursing home I believe it was non-profit, until her end days!! AND did a Rosa Parks move on a train until a literal group of people had to pile on to physically remove this five foot tall woman, she was so determined. I mean seriously! 🤯🤯🤯💛💛💛

C D I attended the college that Mr Blockson worked at and I always heard from other students about the boxes of black history items he owned. I believe he had the largest personal black history collection. He had a reputation for not being a nice person so that not want to go to him and request to see his collection.

Shame,her descendent should have that and not some man's collection.
@mgnaly15 жыл бұрын
12Sisters 1bride In order to bring her legacy and history to life, her hymnal should be held and preserved in the African American Museum. The sight of it brings people to tears, and brings out an emotional connection from the viewer. Mr. Bunch said the hymnal and other personal items were in boxes stored in basements and attics. The museum will make sure it will be preserved for future generations to view as a reminder not only of the reality of slavery, but as an inspiration of hope and ability to overcome and succeed.
@12sisters1bride75 жыл бұрын
@@mgnaly1 you made a very valid point.however,i would want my personal items stored with one of my descendents.i must've made that statement a bit personal,what i would want,and not in a man's museum or collection.even if it is in a box in the attic or basement,just keep it in the hands of my descendents.
@graceandpeace44145 жыл бұрын
@@12sisters1bride7 Make sure its outlined specifically in your will to keep your personal possessions in the hands of your descendants and state you do not want your possessions sold or put on public display.

In her house in auburn ny there are very few of her belonging there... they say the bed is hers she used at her brothers home and her bible... I do agree with something being left with the family.. bt MAMA HARRIET was a woman of her ppl... and it can be preserved properly in a museum for generations
@babaduke32985 жыл бұрын
I call full bull on that. I met the great great grandson of the alleged Nat Turner. After sitting and talking with this man, he seemed less than a bit of interested in taking control of the "legacy". He seemed more comfortable receiving residuals and royalties, and leaving the essentials up to White Folk. He was a computer programmer, and content with that position as his main stay. Black folk shirk when it comes to legacy.

Charles Blockson from Temple University in Philadelphia. I’m a graduate of Temple U and while I was attending Temple I always heard about his extensive collection of black history material. Unfortunately, I never took the time to go see it while attending Temple. Maybe I will go back to view the collection.

Harriet Tubman was America's Joan of Arc so im afraid of what "Hollywood" will do. Ms Tubman was against enslavement being portrayed on the stage ( check the autobiography ) because she felt actors could NEVER get the horrors of enslavement produced/ portrayed in an authentic manner. Read her Books...

Yeah Ive been looking at other videos and like bantu culture which was good majority of africa during that time had words in their language based off hebrew origins.. which means if their language was heavily influenced by the Hebrews then our ancestors knew about bible and God long before slavery. they used the bible and twisted and preverted the Holy word to work in their favor and to feel like slavery was or destiny

There were no "christ-lie-ans" in the OT, that's their nt add on bs. No mention of jesus aka lucifer the fallen one in the original testament the only testament which is the Old Testament! The history of black people the real Hebrews who were enslaved for turning their/our backs from TMH! No hope in casper nor that nt no testament book of lies.

@@iAmKishaP Christianity in its true form is about liberation through the almighty god and christ. the bible prophecised that many would make false claims in his name, but that god does not know them. They did the same to my people in latin america with catholocism which is supposed to be "christianity" but ive freed myself from it and found true christianity in christ himself.
