Something to consider: the only reason there's controversy in FBS is because they allow it by including opinion polls & selection committees into the equation. There's never any controversy in the NFL because it's not about feelings in the NFL, it's about the numbers. If the fan base is ok with opinion polls & selection committees, then so be it. It's a bit foolish to complain about subjectivity when you want it to be at the heart of the process. The bye is a key component. We've got plenty of teams now. All we need is the top 8, but we have 4 extra teams. Money will make things expand. I'm worried at some point soon, a good thing will get broken. This year was awesome. Maybe having a few more teams make the regular season worth more to some on the fringe, but I don't want to see Conference championships become an exhibition where one or both teams sit their starters to rest for the playoffs. I don't like automatic bids either for that reason.

I feel like a lot of people are forgetting that the 12 team playoff is set for this year and next. The 4 team playoff contract was through the 25-26 season. They changed from 4 to 12 teams for the last 2 years of the original contract. It's been known/expected to change after 25-26 since 2012 (2013?) when the playoffs was officially announced for the 2014 season I think 1 or 2 seasons is way too small a sample size to make serious changes; but we will see what happens

16 playoff teams defeats the purpose of having a conference championship to win a bye week, and it’s still a possibility the loser plays an easier team… why not rank the best 1-4 seeds conf champs-if Notre dame has a better resume than the 4th, just put them in, put the other conf champs in the the best 5-8 seeds, where likely the losers of the conf champs or those who were ranked top 4 but loss in the last week of the reg szn and then fill out the rest 9-12 seeds… which are either losers of conf champs, missed the conf champ with elite resumes, or Clemson who is an outlier example of they filled the criteria as conf champs but have the worse resume out of any team, so they are auto-bid but at 12th.

Road to playoff options: All teams in the Power4 conference championship games (8 teams) get a bye. The 2 best teams that won in a G5 conference championship game (2 teams) get a bye. This makes playing in a conference championship game matter. The winners of their conference championship games get a home game for their first match-ups game. This will make winning the conference championship games matter. During the byes of those 10 qualifier teams, the next best 12 teams play to get 6 teams for wildcard selection. This way, everyone plays same number of games going into the Sweet 16. Only teams that might end up playing an extra game are those in G5 that ranked lower than 12 like say Army, or lost their G5 conference championship game, but at least they will get a chance to compete for a wildcard spot rather than being left out. The wildcard games kick off the playoffs final 16 selection. Shorten the regular season to 10 games and no scheduling FCS teams. Power4 teams must schedule 1 game from each of the remaining Power4 conferences and 1 game from G5. G5 teams must schedule 1 team from the remaining G5 conferences and 1 team from a Power4 conference. This means everyone will have at least 4 games in the FBS that is against another conference that can play spoiler in rankings even if you schedule the other conferences bottom teams. Wildcard selection means teams like Ole Miss, South Carolina, BYU, Iowa State, Miami, and Colorado could get in as wildcards.

They should’ve gone straight to 16 teams. The way the “buys” are utilized in the 12 team system makes no sense. The Conference Championship games should be eliminated. There is a reason those championship games went to OT and others down to the wire…. For example, if one of the teams in a Conference Championship game gets completely destroyed, the Conference can lose 10s of millions of dollars by knocking their own team out of the playoffs! This perversion incentivizes scripted games to be judged by the selection committee.

This system and method of giving us the best 12 teams is broken! Look at the schedules. Okl for 2025, in the SEC has 8 top 25 teams, 7 in a row, no way a team can handle that. Oregon next year plays 2 top 25 teams, a total joke, so Okl has no chance, and Oregon is in automatic. Schedules have to change. The ACC and Big 12 can combine and not even come close to Okl schedule next year. ACC and Big 12 are jokes of conferences!
