Excellent tutorial, especially the tip about sewing with the Seminole strip on the bottom to avoid stretching.

Thanks Julie - I had been thinking on this the last few weeks. I had some time today so played around with the idea. This video was filmed, edited, rended and posted all following todays daily chat. Pretty amazed with myself! hehe Now to sleep. ZzZzZzZz

Fabulous idea! I knew there had to be an easier way to do this kind of a border. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video.

Great demo, Kendall! When I saw this border on the quilt, my mind immediately went to Seminole. It is definitely quicker.

More than welcome. Folks were asking at the time so I quickly put this together.

You could also cut a white square in half diagonally and sew a cut edge to each end to avoid wasting most of a Seminole strip. I think a 6-7" square would be more than enough.

I recorded the video very quickly and have never done this type of piecing before. I have now figured out a 4" strip of just the background sewn on is all I need on the end. Thank you for your advice. :-)

Great video. Thanks, Kendall. I may have to have a t-shirt printed: "In whatever condition finished is for you." It's a classic!

After you make your strip, if you cut the white block down the center and rotate the ends, this will help make the ends work better. I hope this makes sense.

Just sew all of your strips together, press and them cut to the width required. Then sew them together.

I just tried making this one tonight and what I found is that the quarter inch is too scant to sew it in properly. My answer to this is to make the two white or light backgrounds just an extra half inch wider than the middle coloured strip. In other words, for example, cut the two white background strips to 2.50” each and the middle strip, the regular 2” width. The tip that you gave to iron the back of it all in one direction was very good. I had not thought of that and I had a hard time with mine, so I will try your method, but I will do my two background strips just a bit wider than the middle coloured one. You’ll see that you have a better quarter inch to sew onto. Otherwise, it’s just a bit too scant of a quarter inch. Also, you mentioned at the end about the strip being on the stretchy side, the bias, and that it would stretch perhaps, so I will add two little wee 1 inch border on either side of this seminole border. I think that will help it not stretch as much…

I love Seminole patchwork and just wish there were more tutorials on it. I do have a couple of books on the technique and have made up some samples but it is always nice to see it demonstrated. 😊😊😊

@@kendalltaylor5636 I love quilt patterns or blocks that look complicated but are comparatively easy to put together. I am considering using Seminole patchwork strips to make a jacket. Or perhaps a waistcoat. So, like you, experimenting with different designs. Looking forward to seeing finished quilt. 😊😊😊

Kendall, I don't know how I missed this tutorial last week. Thank you so much. The border was not turning out well and it put a road block on the progress. I'll see if I have enough fabric left and might redo them.... OR time to spend with the ripper.

Yes, there is a little bit of waste this way, but I believe it is actually less waste than the pattern directions.
