I sold a house, then shortly after decided to purchase a 1985 Mercedes Benz Unimog. I immediately blew up the engine. This is the story of the purchase, and the retrieval after 2.5 months of having an engine replaced.

My wife and I were watching this and when pulling away from Roger’s, realized you bought the Mog 5 minutes away from our house….wild! Thanks for sharing the journey.

What a story, man. From one creator to another it’s incredible how far you’ve come and well the story is told compared to your first videos. Echoing what others said - living vicariously through your Unimog adventures. Hella inspirational. Keep it up bro.

PS Sounds like Roger did slapstick fixes like taping the brake and coolant lines and passing the issues onto the next guy…
@HarrisonSchoen6 ай бұрын
@@RuslanVideoFilms the engine blowing up was roger's fault, but also not. there was nothing mechanically wrong with the truck other than an EGT sensor not being installed correctly.

I think the bright side is now you'll know the drivetrain is up to date once it's all done. Better on Day 1 than Day 90 when you're way out in the bush.

i waited 26 minutes to find out what was wrong with it. in the last minute all i got was "the engine replacement" thanks for leaving out all the details. if it does really does have another engine, it is very sick, it should start and run immediately. my 50 yo italian tractor starts much better than your mog. why don,t you fill us all in on the details?

Holy crap! Definitely an adventure! Thanks for the full scoop of ownership! Many things I didn't think about, like insuring it, or towing when it breaks... WOW! that is nothing like a cayenne or 4runner!

Great content. I came for the Cayennes but of cause I dig the Mog as well. I am just curious what was wrong with the engine in the end? They are known to be pretty much bulletproof apart from some oil consumption here in Germany. But I guess shit happens. Also funny how you and your friends always talk about how big the Unimog is. While you have these huge RVs in America at the same time, not to mention the longnose semi trucks and trailers. And while in Europe at the same time we are always shocked about the size of a regular American fullsize pickup truck but still consider the Unimog as a small (true) truck at the same time. 😂

We bought an Ex-Army U1700L which I have put a pod on the back of and it's our adventure wagon. Luckily for me the first time I operated one of them was in 1986 when they replaced our lovely Bedford RL 3 tonners so I was prepared for the agricultural nature of the truck and the maintenance issues. Hence I haven't had too much trouble managing maintenance but it is something one has to keep on top of. Like you however, I bought our truck sight unseen and had to take the seller's word for it that it was a good 'un. Luckily it was and he had kept it maintained. The sensor not being installed correctly is a massive blunder but a pre-inspection might have helped mitigate the issue that killed the engine. Overall you've got the best camper truck made so don't be downhearted! The adventures you will have with it will keep your channel very, very busy! I look forward to seeing all the new stuff you post!

Hey up mate, so what did happen to the mog engine and clutch and why did it take so long to fire up on your cold start, mogs are normally pretty bulletproof unless just worn out

Sorry you had such bad luck did the seller offer to help with the cost to repair it. Also what was the name of the town in Colorado you had it towed to was it La Junta I couldn't tell from the way you pronounce the name of the town.

Im so sorry what happened... but i cant believe how much you paid for this Mog. You could have saved so much money finding one up here in Canada and fitting it out yourself. I suppose to each their own.
@HarrisonSchoen7 ай бұрын
Actually no. These trucks sell for $80-100k for a well sorted one and the back would’ve cost $300k to have someone build. Not to mention the amount of time it would’ve taken.

@@HarrisonSchoen sorry to tell you brother but that is incorrect. Perhaps in your little world of overpriced “overland” ready units, but not in the real world market. $300k?! you are a comedian

Buying a unimog that needs an engine isn't a problem... paying such a price for a unimog that actually needs an engine is a problem - hopefully you can get a partial refund. Otherwise, good opportunity to put an om606 in there (if that's your flavor of a better Mercedes engine) By the way were you at Mi Ranchito with some buddies a couple months ago in Utah? I think Feb. It was either you or an impersonator... didn't realize until after you got in your cayenne.

I regret that I cannot be sympathetic. There should be no way, having been briefed so well by the owner and having so many instruments to monitor your engine that you would "blow it up". Just another example of "expectation" by a young person. I don't have a problem with you not being mechanically proficient but I have a problem with you not knowing that you are not. That vehicle is more likely a 50 miles per hour max vehicle. They are fantastic vehicles but they are SLOW. Keep driving at the speeds you talk about and you will have more big costs!
@HarrisonSchoen14 күн бұрын
I don’t need sympathy! Even with all of the gages, it was missing the most important one. I was closely monitoring everything else and none indicated failure. Lesson learned on my part and I’m now much more mechanically sympathetic of the truck.

Absolute amateur on buying something you let the guy start it which means you didn't get checked the oil level cuz you can't check hot oil can I check a lot of stuff when the engine is more like oh my word can't get your first start sound there was no warm-up. I seen I would not have bought that you're crazy you own it why did you let the guy drive it again

I HATE finding out months or years after something like this happened that "Oh shit, i actually lived RIGHT where this happened and if i'd seen this video then i could have reached out to help this poor soul return the defective vehicle he purchased to its owner, buy him a burger and provide a place to stay so he didn't have to pay thousands of dollars in flights and bs". Midwesterners might predate one another occasionally but taking advantage of a fellow American from "out of town" is savagely forbidden...It is what it is, but i think in the future people will start to say "I'll contractually pay you half now and half when it hasn't broken down in the first month i've owned it. Don't like it? Then you can eat ass".
