I had never heard of this song until my girlfriend sang it to me one evening. We were walking her dog on the beach at sunset. She sang it slowly in the style of an old couple with exaggerated southern drawls. Vividly, I pictured an old husband and wife singing it to each other on their farm.. It was priceless. So endearing. Ocassionally, I would request it, but only when the time was right. Some of the best times of my life.

This song instantly brings a smile to my face and I'm transported back to my childhood growing up in the 60s. We loved this song as kids- it was so much fun to sing and was so different from anything else. It's fantastic to finally see them performing it live. Perfect comic timing, absolutely perfection from two incredible talents.

We sang this in elementary school with the small change that we said knife instead of axe. Also, I like this rendition because you can tell that he's thought everything through and you can see from her expression that she thinks she has an easy fix to everything he says and she's a little annoyed with him for not having thought everything through himself, but he just goes to show her things aren't always as simple as she thinks they are.

you guys sure picked his best.... and this woman... never knew who she was till now! Her nuance is utterly genius and magnificently melodius ...harry lived across bounds before this was even a concept... and as Sidney said it's 'cause they grew up in the Caribbean

I hope you're not implying that Harry Belafonte grew up in the Carribean, because he didn't, he was born in Harlem, New York. His parents were Jamaican though.

@@frednutz1604 Harry did grow up in Jamaica. He was born in New York, but lived with his grandmother in Jamaica from the age of five till he was thirteen when he moved back to New York.

I’m nearly eighty years old, but I first heard these geniuses perform this song only a few days ago. I never knew that Odetta was so beautiful, and I never fully appreciated how handsome and talented Mr Belafonte was. I’m thrilled

*Scenes From A Slow Civil War* brought me here, and wow. It’s hard to believe Revlon paid him $800k to *not* produce another one of these specials… This was so passionate, entertaining, moving and brilliant! If only we learned from the past when looking to the future; it’s absolutely beautiful when people come together like this. Odetta was incredible, too.

Our Mamma used to sing this song to us kids waaaay back when - in the 1970's. She used a few different words such as "...Dear Georgie..." in place of "Henry" and "...a knife..." for the axe. My sister and I used to love hearing her sing it and that would always make us smile. 😍😻❣

I first heard this song in my native Denmark, by 2 Danish singer/actors, their version was funny. However this one with Odetta and Harry Belafonte is outstanding. I saw Odetta when I lived on a kibbutz in Israel, she performed there on night. Always loved Harry Belafonte, he will be missed.
