I'll never forget a moment when my dad, who always yelled at me for playing music too loud and to "turn off that racket", mentioned one night that he really liked that song about the father and son that never connected.. I was blown away that he actually listened to one of the songs that blared out of my bedroom.. Shows how powerful those lyrics are. Nothing changed after that of course.

I believe this song is universal. How many people on their death beds say "I sure wish I'd spent more time at work." No, it's time, all the money in the world won't buy you another minute of life. Time with your kids is the best gift you can give to your kids and your self. I was lucky that before my kids were in school I was able to stay at home with them then when I did go to work I got a job that started at 4:00 am so I was home when they came home from school. I was able to stay home because we gave up on what some people think they need. We didn't have a second car so I put my kids in the stroller and we walked up to 12 miles a day.

My mother was an RN and made her hours to fit us kids. She took a downgrade in pay which we sorely-needed, however, she never regretted it. We should all be more selfless as mothers and fathers. I respect what you did.

This song covers a very common issue many could relate to, between parents and their children that passes completely over the heads of parents as their children mature, always thinking there will be plenty of time. Then, when its captured within the space of 4 verses of song less than 2 minutes in length, _it just hits you like a BRICK!._

The late great Harry Chapin was a singer/songwriter, and a master story teller. He wrote the lyrics and melodies for all his songs, including "Cats In The Cradle." Note: "The Cat's In The Cradle" "Little Boy Blue" "The Man On The Moon." Were all children rhymes. Please do a reaction video on Harry Chapin's "A Better Place To Be." This song is a real emotional tear jerker. With a great message for the lonely. Also look into other songs of Harry Chapin that have become classics...such as: "Taxi, Mr.Tanner, Shooting Star, and W.O.L.D. Great Reaction and analysis video! Awesome!

Harry Chapin had two children about 10-12 years old in 1981. That year, he suffered what doctors presume, was a serious heart attack and died in a head-on collision on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. This backstory is what makes this song bring literal tears to my eyes. He never got to spend any time with his son later in life :(

Sorry to quibble. I'm a long time fan of Harry from 1973. The car accident in 1981 was due to a rear end collision, not head-on. He was swerving on the Long Island Freeway, hazard lights on, and an 18-wheeler tried to speed up to pass him. Harry's car swerved back into the trucker's lane and got hit from behind. The autopsy report says Harry was probably thrown to the top of his Volkswagon Rabbit and bent backwards, which severed his aorta. The autopsy says Harry's heart had many scars and they speculate that he may've been having a heart attack or possibly already dead from one, when the truck hit him. The widow, Sandy, sued the trucking company and won because the trucker should have slowed down instead of sped up. Long Live Harry Chapin!

Such a great song but Harry Chapin was even more of a wonderful human being. He worked tirelessly to feed the hungery even doing small concerts at Universities where you had to bring a bag of canned goods to get in. He died in auto accident and man it left a whole for many who loved his soft folk songs about life and the people in it. I would recommend Taxi (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWbHqJ6piMd3aZY) a live version in a small venue where you can see and feel this man's humanity!! BTW I would also recommend Cat Stevens "Father and Son" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4KVdWhunbt4bdE) another folk singer from the 70's who had many great songs, Oh Very Young, Peace Train, Wild World, Moonshadow, and Morning Has Broken all great ballads that are short but very touching. I have to say you have the most diverse selection of music there is on KZbin and it is always a pleasure to listen to your thoughtful and intelligent reviews.

The first part "the cat's in the cradle, the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man in the moon" are all nursery rhymes. That's what makes it even more sad because the first part is what a parent would sing to a child to comfort it while it goes to sleep.

This song was reflection of Harry's own life being on the road so much, and was written specifically for his son Jeff. So very heartbreaking , not only not being able to have his Dad there while he was growing up, but then to have him so tragically taken from their lives at such a young age is very sad indeed.

I love how you ask your wife about her thoughts, & listen to each other. I love how the children's nursery rhymes are incorporated into the song. And although it seems like a very sad outcome in the song, I always found it very comforting. It served/serves as a warning the world over. Children need love, attention, quality time, & to feel valued. And if they don't get it growing up, they will become exasperated & embittered, & will give their parent/s the cold shoulder, because they will feel that's all they got... Also, the son's words were prophetic. It seems in many ways like a very simple song, but there's actually a lot going on in it.

Now more than ever so many Young Men grow up without their Fathers as well as Young Ladies. They end up in Prison or Juvenile Hall and the same catchphrase is "I didn't have My Father Growing Up". I remember my Father being strict with me and although I resented him for it sometimes I thank him now. He died Seven Years Ago and My Mother really depends on me to help take care of her and because My Sisters live in Two Other States, I'm the Major Caretaker, it's frustrating but if My Father didn't give those lifeskill lessons as a child, my life would have been a mess.

This song came out when I was like three years old, but it uncannily predicted what the rest of my life would look like. And it's because of the non-existent relationship I have with my dad that I'm so close with my daughter. I always knew, from the first time I ever considered the notion of having children, that if I ever did, I would look back at all the things my dad did and do the exact opposite. My dad didn't earn the love of his children, so I made damn sure to earn the love of mine. And I did. My daughter and I are so close that it's ridiculous. She is by far the best thing I've ever done with my life (and I've done some pretty great things, if I say so myself LOL) and I wouldn't trade our relationship for anything in the world -- or all of existence, for that matter. Well, maybe for a Hayley Atwell of my very own, but I would feel appropriately guilty after. Anyway, the moral of this story: having bad parents (or just the one, in my case) doesn't mean you will be a bad parent. Learn from their mistakes and do your damnedest not to repeat them. Your kids will thank you for it.

I try to to spend time as much as I can but I do work alot. I always have a difficult time listening to this song because as a parent this speaks volumes how life is hectic and goes by to fast and how important family is. I wish my children success and hope they don't have to work as much as me and continue to make time for family as they get older and go out into the world.

Unfortunately, it's not going to change no matter how much people react to songs like this.. All I see all day is cell phones in parents faces as kids are talking to them, walking looking at their cell phones while wheeling the baby carriage instead of talking to the baby or kid in the stroller.. They literally cross the street looking at the phones. So all the "My kids are my life", My reason for living" quotes, memes etc.. ... just words that they think they're supposed to say.. actions say otherwise.
