One of the greatest story song writers of the generation.

Not about his music but the man. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his charity work. He was a founding member of America Hunger and about 50% of his concerts were for charity. He was a remarkably good man.

In 'The Mayor of Candor Lied' there is a lyric 'and it hit me like a thunderbolt exploding in my mind' and at that point the cello plays one note that gives chills to me every time. It is also a great story. Well that's Harry. He was the story teller.

Another great singer songwriter & storyteller. He had so many great songs such as "W·O·L·D", "Mr. Tanner", "They Call Her Easy", "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas", "Shooting Star", "Halfway To Heaven", "Six String Orchestra", "Dreams Go By", Remember When The Music", "Story Of A Life".

Harry was, IMHO, the greatest storyteller, ever!

Harry ChApin (long A sound) was a master story teller. His saddest song indicts the American educational system, it is called Roses Are Red. A true life mass shooting song called Sniper tells the tale of the Texas University shootings in the late sixties. But the song What Made America Famous is probably the most inspirational / hopeful song Harry ever wrote.

@@miketocci of course flowers, worst part of being old enough to have seen Harry live is you forget details, thanks for the correction

@@chetstevensqNo worries. It wasn't so much meant to correct anyone, it was just so that the right song name was there in case anyone wants to give it a listen. Always good to hear from another Chapin fan. Keep the change!

Still my favourite Harry song. The lyric in the bridge is so poignantly longing for lost youth. The older I get, the more evocative it becomes.

The song is a true story of how he met his eventual wife.

There are so many great songs. His most well known are probably Cats In The Cradle (lyric by his wife), Taxi and it's sequel called Sequel. My favourites are probably Mail Order Annie, Corey's Coming, She Sings Her Songs Without Words and Shooting Star

You're right, the mixing was poor on this version. There are other live versions that do this great song better justice. By the way, Harry also wrote a song that is the most disturbing and depressing song ever written. It's called "The Shortest Story" and it's the life story of a child born into poverty. It's not very long but it'll have an impact you'll never forget. Check it out if you feel up to it.

The Shortest Stories and a great version of I Wanna Learn a Love Song can both be found on Greatest Stories Live.

Thanks for covering one of my favorite artists.. His last name is pronounced "Chaay-pin"... long a.. He's always best viewed live.. I never noticed what you were saying about the cello, but I see you added that was only the case with head phones.. Makes sense.. Peace!

The best version of this song is on Harry's first live album, Greatest Stories Live

The studio version has similar instruments that are similarly played. The difference is the studio version's sound engineer had complete control over the volume of individual instruments. Unfortunately this recording allowed the instruments to overpower the singer. Harry's guitar is almost unheard once the other instruments come in. By the way, there is a different first verse that you can hear on his "Greatest Stories Live". I think it is a better intro to his story ... "I come fresh from the street, fast on my feet Kinda crass and corny Not much meat on my bones and a whole lot alone And more than a little bit horny"

As is often the case, the studio version on the Verities and Balderdash album is better in terms of the audio mixing - so the cello doesn't overpower the backing instruments

Harry, you owe it to yourself to hear a better version of this. The audio is awful and -maybe just me - but it feels too fast. Beautiful song. The other Harry has been gone so long now, but every time I see a video it’s like I’m with an old friend I never met.
