Harry Enfield is a gem. These clips play on the stereotype of the Afrikaaners are very blunt and to the point - a trait inherited from the Dutch. Harry Enfield "Homophobic Dad" is another good one. Actually there are so many as he did many series on BBC over the years playing many different characters..

Without trying to "stereotype" every single South African male who came to the UK in the last 30 years, the ones I have met so far are all straight talking, no nonsense individuals who get right to the point. ie, not very British! I love this sketch and was chuckling away to myself in the pharmacy this morning when I had to wait a few minutes for my monthly prescription.

Check out Harry Enfield & Paul Whighthouse, not every sketch is a killer but all are well written and performed, i'd suggest The Fast Show but you really need to know the different characters to get the full benefit, though there is one sketch they did with Jonny Depp, he loved their work and asked if it would be possible to have a cameo in one, he plays the part perfectly, well worth a look.

This is as funny as f`k. But our Pharmacists don`t act like this ( whose would ? ). First, I must say it is true that I find many Pharmacists ( Pharmacological Chemists ) speaking Spanish - or another European Language - as their first language over here in the North of England, at least. But none of them would be allowed to get away with being so rude to their assistants !

The character that Enfield is playing is supposed to be Afrikaans there is a perception that they are very blunt and far from discreet so he is exaggerating this perception , I don't say it's a correct perception however I have definitely met a few that lack sensitivity. To be fair it's such an aggressive sounding accent that even mild mannered Afrikaans can sound aggressive . Harry Enfield produced so many funny characters and sketches back in the day.

I know that you guys get this but the difference between yourselves and most ordinary Brits is that on hearing this for the first time, we would likely burst out laughing at both the pharmacist's lack of decorum and the embarrassment of the customers, whereas i guess most Americans would be shocked at the former and horrified at the latter.

This would have been made in the 80s or the turn of the 90s, when South Africa still had the racist apartheid regime and was widely unpopular around the world. This may be why he does the accent.

It's more that Afrikaans have a reputation for being very, very direct and blunt. Nothing is sugar coated. Diplomacy and discretion are in short supply hence the irony of him being in a role that requires both.
