The last entrant to the sketch - and greeted with rapturous applause - was Kathy Staff, very well known at the time for appearing in a soap opera called Crossroads and as Nora Batty in the classic comedy series Last Of The Summer Wine. The husband, Henry McGee, had appeared in several roles with Benny Hill and was in a commercial for Sugar Puffs breakfast cereal along with the Sugar Puffs 'Honey Monster' and appeared in many comedy movies.

The opening joke is maybe of it's time. Wurlitzer made organs and jukeboxes (the music players that were in pubs and clubs in the 50's onwards, you see them in all the old rock n roll movies of the time) and Xerox made the old fax machines and photo copiers. So reproductive organs? Do you get the joke now? lol.

Yes the Xerox photocopiers would be the reproductive part and the Wurlitzer would be the organ part.

Benny Hill used to be a milkman (someone who would deliver milk from the dairy to the home every day) in Southampton. At his height he was one of the funniest comics around but was gradually cancelled by political correctness. Just north of Southampton is a town called Eastleigh and he is remembered there by having a street named after him - Benny Hill Close. His history as a milkman may have influenced his record, and show sketch, called Ernie, he drove the fastest milk cart in the west. You can probably find that to react to.
@michaelkenny85407 ай бұрын
Seeing as you are such a Benny Hill fan can you tell us which is the funniest episode you watched after he ditched Hills Angels (note that it was Benny who stopped using them as his ratings were going down) and started featuring 'Hills Little Angels'? I am willing to bet 90% of what you know about Benny Hill revolves around Hills Angels sketches and you know (or care) little about his 1950s work at The Prince of Wales Theatre or his 1960s TV shows. Show me you are not T&A obsessed.

Benny Hill was what would be thought of as risque seaside comedy. Lots of scantily dressed women and slapstick humour. A lot thought it was sexist (I never did) but the ladies on the show, even after it was cancelled and Billy died, said that he was always a gentleman and did his best to look after them and treated them right. In fact he was godfather to at least one of the dancers children. He had his own dancing ladies, The Hills Angels, who would do musical numbers during the show. The theme tune to the show became famous and was and still played a lot for comedy circumstances, the theme tune being Yakety-Axe or Yakety-Yak. A lot of the silent slapstick sketches are speeded up and there would normally be a chase at the end of the show. Another reason why I never thought it was sexist was that the men always in the end are the ones who end up looking like fools or losing. The Benny Hill Show was actually very popular in the States and a lot of Americans of the time would know about Benny. I would suggest you look at some more Benny Hill and maybe some of the silent slapstick stuff.
@michaelkenny85407 ай бұрын
Hills Angels were introduced to try and increase his ratings and were a based on Kenny Everett's Hot Gossip. They did not help stop the slide in his popularity (his audience had halved in 10 years) and after a while they were dropped as they got him bad reviews. He introduced 'Hill's Little Angels' to replace them (children, some of them kids of the dancers) but it did not work. His audiences still declined and he was cancelled. Strangely no one EVER posts clips of the shows with Hills Little Angels and its nearly all 'Hills Angels' sketches. I wonder why that is? (cue endless rants about 'politically correct/woke' revisionism......

There are at least 2 women who say they were asked to 'look after him' to get to be a dancer. Hazel O'Connor also said he propositioned her when (as a young girl) she went to his flat to try and become a dancer.
@paulmaxey63777 ай бұрын
@@michaelkenny8540 I personally have never heard of those rumours so I can't comment on them unless you have some evidence to back up your claims. He did propose to 2 women in his life time, both refused. One was Annette Andre who said he asked her in the early '60's (she was born in 1939, so would have been in her 20's). As far as I know there were never anybody come forward during the investigations after Jimmy Saville case when they looked for past sexual predators. He became Sue Upton's (Hill's Angel and later would have a hand in suggesting dancers suitable to become a Hill's Angel) children's Godparent and was close friends with Sue and her husband. There were also rumours that he was gay, as her was a lifelong batchelor but he always denied this.
@michaelkenny85407 ай бұрын
@@paulmaxey6377 a simple Google will get the 2 women's names. Hazel O 'Connor is also available via Google. Its not 'rumour' its accounts from the women themselves. Also look up what Bob Monkhouse says about how Benny and his sex life. It was considered standard practice for stars to abuse their position and even well-known names for example Norman Wisdom, made no attempt to hide their abuse.

Benny Hill was aired at 7 or 8 pm and considered family viewing. Currently, he's considered sexist but ultimately he's the butt of all the jokes. In a business surrounded by scandel, there has never been any allegations of wrong doing and his female actors considered him a good family friend. His humour would create a lot anxiety among the fragile youth of the UK and the US,

Though his style of humour eventually fell out of favour (the irony being that those who called his material out as being sexist failed to realise that, more often than not, the male character in the sketch would be the one made to be or feel inferior) he was a dedicated professional and used a number of groundbreaking TV camera effects in his show. He was an excellent mime and cited Charlie Chaplin as one of his primary influences. In a documentary shown in the UK around the time of his death in the early 90s he spoke of having the opportunity to visit the Chaplin residence and the family allowed him to go into Charlie's private study. Sitting at Chaplin's desk he said that he looked up to shelves of video cassettes and on one all he could see was Benny Hill, Benny Hill, Benny Hill...
