I dearly miss Jennifer and Clarissa...their eccentricity somehow managed to produce a paradoxical combination of being both frightfully posh and down to earth at the same time...while also being mad as a box of frogs! I actually had the honour of meeting Clarissa Dickson Wright some years before she passed, at a book signing in Falmouth...and I still have a signed copy of her biography.

She was horrible. Pro-fox-hunting and even got convicted for illegal hare-coursing 🤢

Same view and a similar experience here. In fact I was only just looking out her signed book amongst my many bookcases yesterday! She wrote such a kind message which she couldn't have known resonated hugely with me at the time. Rare to find, still means a lot.

I used to go to lots of cheffy restaurants and Michelin starred places - can't be arsed now. Overpriced, pretentious, broadly teetotal by the looks of it and generally undercooked. They talk to customers like they are idiots. We are not. Keith Floyd was indeed the master. What's the point of putting wine in a dish if you can't get a sniff of it.

Schools and society in general are obsessed with immersing children in academia only. They leave school with the knowledge of ancient Egyptian medical practices and calculating the length of the side of a triangle but they couldn't name a native tree in their back garden or peel a potato. We don't allow children to be children and discover the world around them.
