This is a guide on how to fully optimise Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone PC Game to have 4K Resolution, Higher Frame Rate, Fix Graphics problems, and how to turn on Debug Mode.

AMD Users: If you have a graphic issue or a speed problem then you need to do this. Edit Game.ini file and find the line UseVideoMemoryVB = False and change this to UseVideoMemoryVB = True . This will fix your issues.

Another way to be able to launch the game if it still doesn't fit onto the full screen properly is to right click HP exe and click Properties, Compatibility, Change High DPI Settings, tick Override High DPI Scaling Behaviour, on dropdown box choose Application, click Apply. Then run the game and this should sort out any issues. (12:21)

I already finished my entire walkthrough of this game, the last part of which will soon be posted, before I increased the frame rate, but at least I know how to make Harry go a little faster for future walkthroughs. I think I'll keep all the other default settings as they are, though, like I like the field of view number of 90 just fine rather than making it higher. And I don't recall any kind of texture bugs happening, like that in the second game, though I did change that one anyway. But thanks for making this video and the one for the Chamber of Secrets! 😁 They helped me a lot! 👍🏻

Actually I had big problems with playing this game on Win10 so I downloaded a WinXP VM and played it there XD. I was able to edit everything with notepad and play the game as you did here. It's especially funny how you can break the game later on in the final scene if you fly into the voldemort chamber with the mirror of Erised and activate Quirrel changing his head, and then fly into the chamber before where you fight Quirrel and he'll get stuck with Voldemorts head and repeat things like 'die potter' etc. Very funny

great input but i have a question During the first part with the Flipendo challenge, i noticed the shards from broken pots fly away slowly and stay suspended in the air I installed the latests files, with vanilla movement and just 1080p resolution + the UsePrecache=false Later edit : I just changed the Vsync (in nvidia control pannel) to On (i had Fast option enabled)

I was feeling nostalgic and decided to install this game. Thank you for your guide because it helped me run the game at a bigger resolution. However, I still have one issue. Instead of playing the nice tune after casting a spell or during it, it sounds like it a came from a horror game. I am playing the game at 60fps using the method you showed us. No worries!! I'm afraid this won't ever be fixed unless someone remakes the game files for that section of the game. So currently no there is no way to make them bigger at all.

You can just add the lines missing into your file. Also If it's not in your file it might be because you haven't saved the game once yet. This sometimes happens in the User file where not everything is in it till you get to a save game book.

Thank you!! That is a challenging one. It is dependant on the exe file of the game you have I believe with HP1 and HP2. As for the fix I am not sure if that would cause issues with the language but it could well do as its made for the English version of the game.

So, first of all I had to install a virtual machine with Windows XP on it because W8.1 doesn't support it since it's a 64 bit version. The game at first it worked just fine, the only two main problems were: 1) The game couldn't run a resolution higher than 800x600, and if I try to run it on fullscreen the game crashes. 2) The mouse sensitivity became Flash itself, the fastest mouse speed I've ever seen (yes I tried to lower it and it doesn't work) I found your video and then I followed every single step in the video (didn't need the 4k thingy tho), THEN I saw the pinned comment, I moved the files in this order: Widescreen Fix -> Mouse Fix Guess what? The game now runs at 1920x1080 (more or less) and the mouse works fine... sadly it still crashes if I try to go on fullscreen but who cares? The main problem is... that I can't play the game, the menu works btw, but if I try to open the savefile it just crashes with this error: "General Protection fault! History: AActor::ProcessState

Are you still trying to play the game on a virtual machine? cause you don't need to use that on any Windows in order to play the game at all. Are you also trying to play the game via the disc normally? or via a no cd exe which you have to have on Windows 7 above? Did you also use the Legacy files too? as they are needed. Also changing the compatibility of the game exe to Windows XP Service Package 3 normally fixes the main issues of the game beyond the main menu.

Sooo, I discovered the problem. And it was the savefile, it was just corrupted, the game works but sadly the mouse is still fast af :/ Btw yes I'm still using the virtual machine since on W8.1 for some reason the "Harry Potter" folder doesn't exist in Documents

Ah ok. You should be able to (if you can find the HP folder in the virtual machine your using) be able to edit the HP ini and change the frame rate to fix this. Also the mouse fit mod should fix the jittery movement of the mouse.

I did everything and worked fine for HP2 . In this case, i'm having an issue. I've patched HP1 with the italian no cd version and works good, i've changed the framerate to 60 as well and fixed the textures, installed the 2 dll files ( LegacyResolutionHack) , changed the FOV and the game runs correctly. The only thing is that I can't edit the game file and putting 1920x1080 because the game menu becomes so huge that I can't even click on "Start game". I've tried to change that high DPI thing by clicking proprieties (application>apply ecc...)but didn't work. How can I fix ? P.S : I avoided to install the widescreen fix because it makes the game crash for whatever reason, and the www.oldunreal.com link you provided doesn't lead me to a thread with any kind of help , but I guess I don't need that since the game runs smoothly without it

Sadly you can't just use the Legacy files on this game and get all the game to work at higher resolutions. You will need the HP1 Widescreen file as well. Unfortunately this has been an issue with multiple people atm. Some people have this issue and others don't. It is a tough one to fix for everyone. I am still trying to find a way for it to work perfectly for everyone but it will take time and testers. In the meantime you can try some of the other fixes in the Description but that is all that is available for the moment.

I think if you find a No CD Patch for the German version of the game and use that instead I think you should be able to play it then in German. I'm not certain but you should be ok by doing that.

It works perfect, I have FHD monitor, but there is a problem with change size of text, apps and the other items, it shows me only 100-175% and I need small size

I run the game in Windows XP (service pack 2) compatibility mode as admin and noticed that during spell lessons and drawing the spell shapes, it will never take you past 35% and you will fail every time UNLESS you run the game in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode, then the spell lessons work correctly, however the game runs choppier and music/audio are choppy and unlistenable, whereas in XP compat mode, the music/audio are perfectly fine. Don't know if there's a workaround other than switching back and forth between the two compat modes or just skipping the spell lessons lol.

This sounds like a possible frame rate issue in which case I would recommend the 60fps cap fix that is linked in the Pinned Comment which you put into the System folder of the game and see if the issue still persists. Otherwise with the movement mod when hitting the spell lessons hold down space bar just before the drawing begins and it will skip it all.

Hi thank you again for help me playing HP ^^. You're help was good on part 2. But here I have the same issue like some others too. My target was 3440x1440. Unfortunately all replacements of 'HPBase.u' or 'HPMenu.u' has error windows. The only help was the "Fix menu buttons" hack by wendigo. This was helpful, because I can start the game, without reaching the bottoms of the menus. But here is a further problem. The ingame menu was not fixed. So I can't not really use it. For HP2 you have found a fix for that. Maybe for HP1 too ? (:

Unfortunately currently the only fix for HP1 Menu is the one currently in this video. I have had a really difficult time with this game as there have been a fair few people with the issue where putting in the HPMenu.u file breaks the game for them but then others including myself have no issues at all with this. My only conclusion as to why this is now is something to do with certain peoples display aspect ratios. As the people I have managed to get some feedback from where it worked for them their screens support 16:9 which is what my monitor supports as well. There was one person who had a huge aspect ratio in the past and could not get the fix to work at all. There sadly isn't much I can do to help people with this issue atm. The best way for me to be able to help with it would be to have the issue myself then I could find a work around but without the issue its hard for me to tell if the issue is ever fixed or not sadly. I shall keep an eye out to see if there is a full solution to this issue for some users but atm I'm afraid it doesn't work at all with any solutions then you will just have to play the game as it normally is.

It work great for Chamber of Secrets, but on this game my analog sticks don't work properly, i can obly walk forward and backwards, but cant control the camera angle with it. It all works in CoS. What can i do? Edit: I did use the hp2 movement mod, so maybe that is why it won't work maybe?

Make sure you are using DS4/5 while playing and you might need to use Xpadder if not already doing so. I honestly wouldn't recommend playing this game with controller at all as it doesn't work well and especially with the spell drawings.

This sounds like a corrupt install of the game to me. The only other thing I can think of is if you are somehow playing the game in Software Mode instead of using Direct 3D.

I have an issue where every time Harry casts a spell - even one of those dud ones where you aim and release without casting anything - the game freezes up for 2-3 seconds, as if it can't handle the casting motion. Would you know a way around that?

You will need to do this yes. Nvidia users can do this by right clicking the desktop and choosing Nvidia Control Panel, Manage 3D Settings, Program Settings, Click Add and browse to find HP exe, Once loaded up scroll down to Max Frame Rate Option and change this to 60fps or lower if its still an issue and then click Apply in bottom right hand corner. Also make sure that your MinDesiredFrameRate is set to 60 in the HP ini file in your File Explorer/My Documents/Harry Potter area.

Hhhmm, I tried this a few different ways already but I get a bug with the camera every time. As soon as gameplay starts, the camera is in a fixed position at a really weird angle. I would advise you use the new updated HP2 PC movement system for HP1 PC which is linked in the description and pinned comment and is the best way to play this game now. The original system does not work well on modern systems and is very clunky.

Hi, 1st point do you have a game controller plugged into your PC at all? As this can sometimes cause issues like the spinning. 2nd point is the menu fully fitting your screen correctly? As in do you have 2 options on the load game section which should be load game or replace game I believe.

This game can have very frequent audio problems and some people get it worse than others. The only way to fix it is to limit the fps down. I'm usually fine on 60 but I know others have to go as low as 30 for it to work ok. You just need to play around and see what works in the end. Otherwise use the speedrunner frame rate file fix linked in the description and pinned comment that they use to lock the games fps to 60 and fixes these issues.

He did help and found a menu fix which I provided the link to in the Description (first link) He did say however, that it did make certain elements of the menu inaccessible. So you may have to use that and see how it feels when playing with it. I have a video of my Harry Potter PC Games running on Windows 95 using PCem and it would work if I make an ISO Image for the Patch .exe to be copied to and then paste it to the one in PCem or 86Box and then it works… Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets are the only Harry Potter PC Games to support Windows 95. It can be difficult to get the old Harry Potter games working for modern PCs whereas if you had PCem and installed either Windows 95/98 then it works and only Pentium II’s can handle the games if you had bought a new PC this year then you should think about using PCem and I might do a tutorial for it with either PCem/86Box and I hope that they would release a new PCem soon with new and old faster graphics and run Windows XP more stable

Hi please see MASSIVE UPDATE section in both the videos description or pinned comment with the new updated widescreen fix. There are 2 to choose from (your choice) 1 with old movement system and widescreen and the other with HP2 PC movement system and widescreen. These files should now work with all versions of the game. Bare in mind you might need to do a fresh install if the old widescreen mod broke the game.

So the HP2 movement version of the widescreen mod forces me to strafe (which makes it unplayable on my laptop) and the stock movement version of the mod keeps the camera in a fixed location for some reason (even more unplayable). These are the only fixes for the widescreen mod I'm afraid. The whole point of the HP2 movement mod is it basically puts all of HP2 movement onto HP1. As for the other thats how the original game plays. You will have to put up with it sadly HP1 was never that well built control wise. If you are playing with a trackpad on the laptop I would suggest if you have one to use a usb mouse instead.

I was playing through with the HP2 movement mod, played through the first quidditch game, then moved on to the next part of the game where Hermione talks to you and then you get to actually wander around a bit before getting to the Lumos lesson. After that initial cutscene with Hermione, I closed out the game for a few hours, then returned just now to my save file but it puts me back at the start of the Quidditch game but there's no gauge to catch the snitch, and the most concerning part is all of my beans, wizard cards, and house points are set to zero. I haven't touched debug mode or anything. Do you reckon I'll have to just start over? I did play through the Quidditch lessons from the Main Menu plus one round of the Quidditch tournament on the Main Menu prior to relaunching my save file. Could something have gotten messed up from accessing those?

@@MarilynsBeetlePincers Thats a new one my guess would be that somehow the quidditch league in the main menu have overwritten the normal save file you had for the game. When you go to save games does it show the Intro 3 (Pre Lumos Challenge) picture or Quidditch? The only other thing you could try from the main menu is go to debug level select and select save game in bottom right and load a save there. Otherwise I think you have lost your progress unfortunately. Never seen that before personally but I usually play the main menu quidditch part at the end of the game.

Did you 1 use the most up to date widescreen fixes linked in the description and pinned comment? and 2 also use the Legacy files as well? You need both of these for the widescreen to work correctly. The other issue for fullscreen could be that the game is trying to default to the software rendering mode instead or direct 3d. To fix that create a shortcut of the hp exe file the right click the new shortcut, properties and at the end of the target field after the quotes put a space then -c this will force the game to then run under direct 3d instead of software rendering. Software rendering does not work properly on modern day hardware at all.

Although some people have just used the HP2 movement widescreen fix and not Legacy and been fine not sure why. I do know that this game via Windows 11 is really not great atm and does seem to have issues for quite a few people. Laptop users are the ones that really have trouble on Windows 11 with HP1 so my guess is the on board graphics is causing the issues for those users.

Use the updated HP2 movement mod for a better experience on the game with a system like HP2 PC which also fixes all the issues with the original mouse movement. If you still have speed issues then you will want to download the 60 fps cap to fix that. This is an error that some users have had while others don't. It is still no exactly known why some users have it and others do not. There are some ways that can fix the issue but these do not guarantee a fix i.e for some users these fixes worked while others nothing worked. The first major one that seems to work quite well is going to Documents, Harry Potter and deleting HP ini then trying to start up the game again and if it launches without an error to start a new game and get to a save point then quit and edit the new HP ini file with the settings that you want. Otherwise the other fixes which I have listed in the Description and Pinned Comment of the video have helped fix the issue for others as well. Otherwise the only other thing you could try is a different no cd crack. I'm afraid this is the best help I can give on this issue as I have never had it myself and have never been able to replicate it so have had to work with other users to try and find fixes for the problem. Try these solutions and see if they work for you otherwise you will either have to play the game just with the no cd crack and no graphical enhancements or try using a Windows XP Virtual Machine.

You can use the fix that speedrunners use which is linked in the description and pinned comment of the video in the frame rate section. This will cap the game at 60fps some users just have to use this cause nothing else works sadly. The only downside to using this is that there will always be an fps counter on the bottom right of the screen that you can't turn off as its turned on at all times cause it is a requirement for speedrunners to have. But this file should fix your issues with speed of the game.

Yea you will need no cd exes for the 3 early titles in order to be able to play them on modern windows. This is due to the drm safedisc having huge security issues and there for being disabled by Microsoft on modern windows. The no cds remove the drm so that they can be played properly on modern windows.

If you are trying to play the game at 1920 x 1080 then please try doing the following and let me know if it has helped you. Only place in the Legacy files. If you have the HP1 Widescreen files in the System folder please do not use them. Then find HP exe and right click, Properties, Compatibility, Change High DPI Settings, Override High DPI Scaling Behaviour, Application, Apply, Ok. Then launch the game and let me know if all is ok for you.

@ Are you on Nvidia? Cause if so this should sort it out fully. Nvidia Control Panel, Adjust Desktop Size and Position, Set scaling to Aspect Ratio, Preform Scaling by GPU. That should sort out the issue. If not try Set scaling to Fullscreen, Preform Scaling by GPU, Overrise the Scaling Mode Set by Games and Programs. Let me know if this helps sort it out.

Did anyone play it with PS4 controller (Windows 10)? EDIT: use xpadder or (antimicro it's free from github). Run as Administrator.

The most I could ever do to get this to work at all with controller in the past was with xpadder and using a xbox 360 controller. It didn't work well though and was barely playable. This was years ago though that I tried this and I just have stuck with Keyboard and Mouse for this game as it's how it meant to be played really. Also this game doesn't have native controller support which doesn't help.

@@JokerAlex21 actually I've just got it to work by running (xpadder) as admin :). And now it perfectly controls the game even camera is perfectly smooth with the right stick.

It is on both games that it can happen but I don't ever have the issue on HP1 so to show off what I meant by texture bug problems I had to use my HP2 footage. As HP2 I had the issue.

HPMenu.u is causing the crash, the other file HPBase is fine.

I have seen this happen with some other people too. It's a odd issue that I really can't fix for anyone atm who has the problem as I don't know what on earth is causing this issue for some users. It's so odd I can't really tell you what is causing the problem with the HP1 Widescreen fix. So I am sorry if I find a reason as to why some people have issues with it then I shall let you know but I'm not too sure I will sadly.

Yea it's not ideal and it's strange that some people have this issue. I am wondering if the HP1 Widescreen has issues cause of language for certain users but it's only a guess that one.

@@LisroMeniosa Use the top links in the description to fix these issues. These are modern updated files to fix the game for widescreen. Do not use the old link anymore. As that old link only works for the UK version of the game. I was able to play earlier, and then I was able to open it after changing to 1080p, but now after adding in the widescreen and unreal thing, I'm getting "General protection fault! History: UObject::ProcessEvent

You should try out one of the other solutions as the main one isn't working correctly for you. This has happened to a few different people trying to play the game now. We don't know the exact reason as to why this is happening but I assume it could be because of the games region or the no cd used does not work with the files. @@JokerAlex21 So it seems to work with "CAPTAIN ELLIOT SPENCER" CD crack and such, but whenever I put the widescreen files in, I just get the "FEOption" error, I even opened up the .u files in notepad to try and find those lines but, no luck with that :/

Ok, it's working for me now! The fix was, going to the Harry Potter folder in /c/EA Games or whatever, and deleting everything out, and downloading those files in your top comment, then just following the files there. I think anyone installing from a disc is gonna have the FEOption error.

This sounds like it could very well be the true fix for all with these issues here. Which will be amazing as its been a problem thats been tough to fix. The interesting part is mine was installed via the disc but I never got the issues everyone else has had once.
