Just wanted to put this out there. We are first time watchers with just context about the lore through the movies. Yes, we knew the ring corrupts the soul of the carrier but like many others said the movie doesn’t do a good job at conveying the full extent of the ring’s power. Towards the end we started to understand a bit more and we give praise to Frodo if you listen to our recap. Just wanted to address that, Love you guys!!

A good analogy is drug or alcohol addiction. There's a reason Smeagol was so psychotic throughout. He was tail-end where Frodo was just falling into that same mindset. And, like a real addict, intervention saved his life. It isn't the worst take to be frustrated watching that happen when you don't know what is happening to them.

I get you don't have the full context as first time watchers. But c'mon, the movies do show Boromir being driven mad by the possibility of getting the Ring, Gandalf saying he cannot possess it because he would do terrible things, the same with Galadriel, how dramatically its power affected Smeagol and Bilbo, how Sauron is defeated and the freaking tower of Baradur collapses when the Ring is destroyed, etc. They even have Sam state that it's the Ring which is making Frodo change. You were right that Sam is a capital-H Hero, but someone had to carry the blasted thing and it almost wrecked him. It literally scarred him for eternity. Respect.
@mgentles32 ай бұрын
You're not so far wrong, guys. Tolkien himself said Sam was the hero. Tolkien fought in WWI. He was upper class, so an officer. At that time officers had a guy called a 'batman' who looked after his needs. Between his own batman and the troops around him, Tolkien saw it was 'the little men' who were the heroes of that war as all others. They weren't fighting for their privileges or returning (if they returned) to nice homes or government help. They fought anyway, and many were optimistic and kept a sense of humor. If you watch Frodo's face when he sees Sam from the bed and again when the people bow, you'll see he feels he failed and doesn't deserve the accolades. He didn't 'fail' of course. He carried a thing that was pure torture longer than anyone could.

You must understand, Frodo’s job wasn’t to be a hero, saving people in distress. His job was just to carry the ring to Mt Doom. He had to resist relentless temptation and psychological damage that increased with every step towards Mt Doom. No other being alive could have accomplished what Frodo did.

It was a different kind of heroism, like Sam's heroism was also different. But everything the action heros did (like Aragorn) would be worth nothing if Frodo hadn't done his part. Sort of like Yin and Yang - you need both types of heroism in the world: facing outer demons and inner demons.

The thing about Frodo is that his failure is not a moral one. He got as far as he could, and did everything within his power to get the ring to the volcano. I'm pretty sure the canon explanation for what it took to destroy the ring in the last possible second was an act of God. Literally. The main deity that created the Middle Earth universe normally did not intervene in the affairs of mortals, but did so here by causing the moment where Gollum slips and falls in with the ring. The fact that it had to take divine intervention to get the job done, considering Frodo got it all the way there himself says a lot.

After the ring was destroyed: Frodo left Middle Earth, so that he may be fully healed. He was still able to feel the wound on his arm from the sword at the beginning, plus for being the ring-bearer and it nearly consuming him like it did Gollum. Aragorn returned Gondor to it's former glory, and ruled happily with Arwen for 120 years. He had one son and two daughters. When his time drew near, he chose to take command of his own end. We laid in the House of the Kings in Minas Tirith with Gondor's past rulers and drifted into eternal sleep. Arwen passed one year later. Gimli became the Lord of the Glittering Caves under Helm's Deep, as it was rich with Mithril. He kept his word to Galadriel, and encased the strands of hair within glass and treasured it. Legolas restored the woodlands of Middle-Earth that were ravaged by the war, along with adventuring with Gimli. After Aragorn's death, Legolas made a ship of his own in Ithilien, and left Middle-Earth to cross the sea to reunite with the rest of the elves in the Undying Lands. Gimli crossed the sea with Legolas, due to his close friendship with the elf, and was the only dwarf that was offered that honor. Samwise married Rosie and had 13 children. He was also elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive seven-year terms (49 years.) Afterwards, Sam was given passage to the Undying Lands to reunite with Frodo, as Samwise was also a Ring-Bearer, even for a short time. Pippin became the 32nd Thane of the Shire, and held that position for 50 years. He had one son named Faramir Took I, who later married Sam's daughter. After he retired as Thane, he left with Rohan and Gondor with Merry. He remained there for the rest of his life, and was entombed in the Hall of the Kings, and later moved to be laid to rest alongside Aragorn. Merry was knighted by King Eomer and become Master of Buckland. He married, and wrote a book. He had at least one son. At 102, he returned to Rohan and Gondor with Pippin, dying around the same time as Pippin. He was laid to rest in Gondor with Pippin, and later moved alongside Aragorn.

Lots of reactors just don't seem to understand how strong the corrupting influence of the Ring is. It turned Saruman and Boromir, both of whom were noble, high-minded, and strong-willed, just with the knowledge of its existence within their grasp. Isildur couldn't bring himself to destroy it despite being one of mankind's great champions and only having held it for a few minutes. Gandalf, with all his wisdom, flat out refuses to touch it even for a few seconds because he's so scared of what it would do to his mind. Frodo's been carrying it, on his person and constantly thinking of it, for around a year at that point. He's physically ill, exhausted, starved, and wounded; all of which will sap the will of a person in any situation. Expecting him to contend with the will of the Ring in the place where it is strongest and win is like expecting a end-stage cancer patient to box with Mike Tyson in his prime and win.

Also wanted to add this from another commenter: The chant of "Death" by Rohan had so much meaning behind it. It was a reflection to Illuvatar's (Supreme God) gift (Death) to mankind, so that they can experience what it means to truly live - to have free will and be liberated from the physical world which the elves and Valar would eventually come to envy. But Morgoth and Sauron twisted mankind into believing that "Death" was a curse and corrupted them to turn away from the Gods and seek for immortality, proving that Men are the weakest race and thus the easiest to corrupt for their personal use. The acceptance of "Death" during Rohan's charge was a direct act of defiance against Morgoth and Sauron, showing them that men are not as weak as they thought, and that they will learn to fear the true strength of men when they have finally accepted the gift of "Death". Which is why you can see the fear reflected on the Orcs' faces as the Riders inch closer and closer, because they now realise that men were no where near as weak as they thought they were.

And Frodo NEVER told Sam to leave in the book. And Sam not only took the Ring when he thought Frodo was dead, he used it to rescue him from the tower. For that reason, Sam too sailed to Valinor before he died like the other Ring-Bearers, Bilbo and Frodo. They went to the Undying Lands to be properly healed because the Ring messed them up so bad.

Frodo withstood the power of the ring for far longer than anyone else, such as Aragorn's ancestor, Boromir, and Gollum, all of whom were corrupted very quickly. While Frodo may have failed in the end, you have to understand that nobody could have been able to throw the One ring in Mount Doom. The fact that he was able to bring it all the way is an immense feat and definitely worth huge respect. Him staying in Middle-Earth tho would have been miserable for him, the One Ring had broken him physically, mentally and spiritually not too mention the stab wound he received at Weathertop from the Witch King and from Shelob (the big spider in the cave) would never heal otherwise. Also, to explain the situation with Eowyn and the Witch King basically he had a spell on him that if someone were to stab him or whatever, they would be inflicted with a poison that slowly killled them. When Merry stabbed him though the sword he used had an enchantment basically that got rid of it. In the books, you see how they obtain it however, the movies never show. It was only because of Aragorn that they were saved. I don't remember the exact quote but only he was able to heal both of them. All in all both Sam and Frodo were heroes in different ways.

Denethor used it to watch Sauron, and while even he couldn’t make the Palantiri lie he could choose what to show, and over the years had shown Denethor such an unending narrative of unstoppable power that Denethor eventually gave in to despair and lost the will to fight.

to clear up confusion about Eowyn's family relations: Eomer (Billy Butcher) is her *brother* King Theoden is their *uncle* Theoden had a son (Theodred) who was killed in the second movie, that was obviously Eowyn's and Eomer's cousin and Faramir of Gondor is obviously completely unrelated to all of them lol

Frodo is NOT the worst hero. The Ring is not benign unless in the hands Sauron. Bilbo didn't appear to be so affected for so long because the Shire is far, far from Mordor and Bilbo never had any intent to destroy it. Mount Doom is in Mordor, and so is Sauron. Every step closer to Frodo's goal is one step closer for the Ring's goal, too. And the closer they get, the more powerful the Ring grows. The Ring is like all the Axis powers of WWII, every addiction, every anxiety, every fear, every ab*sive ex on the planet amplified by three thousand years. And it is actively torturing Frodo physically, psychologically, and spiritually, to break his will to destroy the Ring. He is entirely aware that by putting one foot in front of the other, he is increasing his anguish-but he keeps moving forward anyway. Remember how briefly Lady Galadriel was exposed to the Ring before it tempted her to take over the world? It's not just trying to influence him, it's also trying to turn everyone around Frodo into an enemy so Frodo can't even trust anyone-which is a heavy contributor to his paranoia. The fact that it's taken this long for the Ring to even manage to separate Frodo from his best friend is pretty amazing. None of the other characters would have been able to carry the Ring this far, not even Sam. Just because Frodo hasn't gone charging sword-drawn into battle doesn't mean he hasn't been fighting in the war-and he's never had downtime to rest, feast, or drink ale.

The spider in the movie was called Shelob and that's what Gollem meant when he said 'She could do it' in the end of part 2. And the creatures that the Nazgul wer're riding on were creatures from an older world whose kind, still lingering in forgotten mountains cold under the moon, outlived it's time and there in a hideous eagle's nest hatched this last untimely brood, bent on evil. And Sauron took it and raised it on wild flesh until it was greater than all other things that fly, and he gave it to his servant to serve as his steed.

Guys ☹️☹️ I understand ur frustration with Frodo but keep in mind that he isn’t a fighter. He has a heavy weight to carry and for him to be able to carry that ring for as long as he did is a major feat. It’s easier for other people to stand on business because they didn’t have the power of the ring pressing down on them.

Eowyn passed out and fell ill from the damages of the fight against the Witch King , when he shattered her shield, that basically destroyed her whole arm. And the spiritual damage from stabbing him in the face was immense as well so she was in a bad state for awhile. Thankfully Aragorn has the healing hands, and he was able to aid both Eowyn and Faramir back to health.
@catbowserfantasytherapist31322 ай бұрын
In answer to your questions about Merry and Eowyn being so injured by the Witch King-the Witch King had one of the nine rings given to men which essentially starves off death. But death still tried to reach him. So, he basically has a mist of death around him. When Eowyn kills him, that mist disperses around him. So they both basically got a huge whiff of death
@shirleydurr4112 ай бұрын
Only Frodo could have gotten the ring that close to Mordor. That's his strength and his heroic action. No one but Frodo could bear it so far before being corrupted by its power. The ring did affect him -- strongly as we see in the end -- but he carried to the brink. Reaching for Sam's hand and letting Sam help him back up shows his character. If he was not as strong as he was, he would have followed Gollum into the fire of Mount Doom.
@michaelhuie58782 ай бұрын
Frodos isnt useless. He literally held the burden of the ring the whole journey. The closer you get to the source if the rings creation(mount doom) the stronger its influence. Its confirmed NOONE can withstand the rings influence once in Mount Doom. It had to be Gollum interfering to let the ring indirectly be destroyed by an accident.
@ChristopherLongbeard2 ай бұрын
Frodo gets a bad rap, but he had the hardest job. No one else handled the ring for that long, that close to Mordor like he did. Sam is definitely the true hero though
@pabloc88082 ай бұрын
Sauron's influence is so powerful Aragorn can hear his call at the Black Gate even though he never touched the damn Ring. Frodo was at the heart of Mordor and kept pushing, after MONTHS carrying it. He has by far the most willpower in the story, although Sam is a close second having been so close to Frodo for all that time and never even considering to take it for himself

Nobody on earth would have been able to drop the ring. It HAD to be destroyed by accident.
@markwarner55542 ай бұрын
Tolkien himself said that nobody could have tossed the ring into the fire on purpose. It was always going to require an accident. The whole thing hinged on rather a lot of luck...or not. There are also some reasons to think the god of that universe (Eru Ilúvatar) nudged Gollum over the brink in a little bit of divine intervention.
@ragg95852 ай бұрын
Frodo carried the ring from the Shire to Rivendel and was glad to get rid of it. He already experienced what the ring of power did to his mind and will, basically bending his soul. When Frodo took the task of carrying it to Mordor, at the council in Rivendel, he knew what that meant. He saw that the others had their wills elsewhere and not solely on the task of the destruction of the ring. You can see then, the sorrow on Gandalf's face. Because Frodo wasn't meant to be the hero, he was the sacrifice. Carrying it for so long and with the increasing power of the ring, Frodo can't eat or sleep, constantly fighting the corruption of the ring. You cannot see the struggle of Frodo as clearly, but it is huge. The ring is eating his mind, bending it to his will. When Frodo is at Mount Doom, the ring is at its ultimate power. Not Gandalf, Aragorn or Sam would have the will power to wield it, not even if they took it from him. The reason why Elrond asked, who wants to take it the ring Mount Doom, is because they would have to volunteer as it was a suicide mission. Frodo was meant to fail. As Frodo was granted to leave with the elves to the West it was because, even though the ring was destroyed (through its own evil and corruption of both Frodo and Gollum), the damage it did to Frodo was permanent. He still wants it, as Bilbo also wants it when he asks for it in the end. That's also why Frodo wishes to save Smeagol as it means he can save himself. Frodo knew he was sacrificing himself and therefore couldnt lend it to others, such as Boromir or Sam. He would have abandoned his sacrifice and hope. Basically asking them to die in his stead. Also it wouldn't be very practical as the ring is treacherous. Sam carried the ring long enough to understand the rings power and Frodo's struggle in the tower of Cirith Ungol when he rescued Frodo. I hope this sheds light on Frodo's struggle and the ultimate sacrifice he made for the world. Gandalf said "it was only a fool's hope" that Frodo was going to make it. He didn't. But he got the ring close enough that its own doing led it to the fires of Mount Doom. But he couldn't have gotten there without Sam. Who is the true hero of the story.

Great reaction guys, really enjoyed it. I just wanted to add something about Frodo: So to simply sum it up, NO ONE can resist the ring. Frodo is the person who managed to resist it the best of all (though even he gave way in the end). It was enough for Sam to have the ring for only a few hours (from the time Frodo was stung by the spider until he returned the ring to Frodo). It is not so clear in the film, but in the book it is clear how quickly the ring took its toll on Sam. He immediately began to have delusions that he could become a master/ruler. He could never have destroyed the ring either, no one can (In the book no one actually destroyed the ring by itself, Gollum slipped by accident because he was so happy and started jumping around when he had the ring again, and then he slipped into the fire). Had Gandalf had the ring, he would have become the new Sauorn - That's just how the ring works, NO ONE can resist its power. And to answer your question at 44:17 regarding who is the real hero you simply have to say both Frodo and Sam. Sam did an incredible job for Frodo, and the mission could never have been accomplished without him. But you also have to give Frodo his flowers. He carried an incredibly heavy burden, And there is no one in history who has had the Ring and managed to resist its power as well as Frodo did. And I agree about Smeagol. He got an important role to play in the end, a decisive role because without him the ring wouldn't have been destroyed either. This is exactly what Gandalf predicted in the first movie where he said that Gollum will probably have a role to play, for good or evil (minutes 48:34 to 49:10 in The Fellowship of The ring).

Tolkien and Jackson's depiction of PTSD after life changing events in this movie is the best i have ever seen and is always my favorite part. I served two tours in Iraq and the feeling of finally coming back home to that beer with your friends you held on to and dreamed for. And when it happens it's surreal. Everyone smiles with hollow smiles knowing what we left back. And it's always there in our minds like a dull constant pain. It was captured so, so well at the end. And the whole time you're enjoying this beer while people around you whose lives didn't change is something that's hard to explain. And you drink and think how you probably don't deserve any of this. But you move on and enjoy life anyway because that was the whole point of coming back home intact

Think of the ring as being highly radioactive. Affecting only a small area, with the one wearing it being hit by it the hardest. Frodo was dealing with advanced radiation poisoning from the start. So to speak. Yeah, Elijah Wood the actor did ham it up a bit, and sometimes came across as corny. Imagine though, being eaten away by a sentient cancer. A disease with a mind, and a will of its own. Totally evil. Sort of makes the character a little more bearable when you recognize what he was really carrying.

Frodo bore the ever-corrupting temptation. You've seen Gandalf, Galadrial, Boromir, everyone being tempted by the ring. Even those who never touched it were tempted by it. We all point out that Frodo couldn't have made it without Sam, and that Sam was incorruptible. The first part is true, but after Sam revealed that the Orcs didn't get the ring he was tempted. He could save Mister Frodo from the ring, he just had to carry it for a while. Yes, he could carry it for Mister Frodo, just to let him get his rest. You can see the hesitation, but Sam passed it over. Not because he was stronger, but because it hadn't been in his hands long enough to dig into his mind.

Even if the ring wish not to be destroyed, it was ultimatly its mind corrupting power that led to its own destruction. Willingly destroying the ring is just impossible. If sam tried to push frodo, it would have corrupted him before. Only act of good around the ring lesser its influence.

Also: Denethor is made out to be much more horrible in the movies than he really was. He wasn't that bad, but he made the mistake to look into the Palantir, the seeing stone. Sauron showed him horrible visions and literally drove him mad with despair. He wasn't a nice character but not nearly as bad as the movie shows him to be. Galadriel is one of the oldest and most powerful beings in Middle Earth. She was born before the Sun and the Moon existed, lived in the Undying Lands and she saw the two trees which gave light to the world before they were destroyed by the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, to whom Sauron was only a servant. The Maiar are even older, they literally participated in the creation of the world through music. Wisest of them is Olorin, whom we know as Gandalf :)

The toll on him is horrendous and no person should have to go through. Giving the ring to Sam cannot work because then both hobbits would be burdened, and kill each other to keep the ring. Frodo's task was NOT a task anyone could do, his ability to resist the ring was much greater than anyone else but it took its toll on Frodo. Sam was their to support him, protect him and get him to the mountain alive. I can see in your recap that you figured it out.

Gandalf knew that the ring never could be destroyed by will it must happen by accident or providence thats why he called it a "Fools hope". In the end it was the providence that destroyed the Ring, from Bilbo finding it, Bilbo not killing Gollum up to Frodo and his journey because of Ilúvatar. Tolkien wrote about it for the moment where once Frodo got the Ring to its destined point (on the brink of Doom in the hands of Gollum) "The other Power then took over: the Writer of the Story (by wich I do not mean myself), that one ever-present Person who is never absent an never named." -Tolkien Now this either states that Ilúvatar intervened or that the power of oaths (The Natural law of Middle Erath created by Eru) took over, because Gollum swore to never betray or harm the Master of the Ring. (Wich he did by biting the finger off of Frodo seconds after Frodo claimed to be the master of the ring by putting it on)
