This scene was so disturbing because Dumbledore was such a dignified character who always knew what to do in any given situation, and seeing him in total distress and despair made you felt like all hope was lost.

Especially because he's such an sweet old man I actually teared up watching this ( first and everytime) and I feel so bad for when he says things like " it's my fault" or " kill me" or the sideways nodding he does before the last drink and the fact that he was also very thirsty by drinking that. I usually drink a lot of water and the feeling of thirsty kills me imagine what professor Dumbeldore must've felt. It really shows how evil Voldemort is

That the look on poor Dumbledore's face before he takes the last drink is just so heart wrenching. It really gives you an idea of how much courage Harry really has, if that had been me I'm not sure if I could have forced him to drink. Such a sad and well acted scene.

To really appreciate this scene you have to imagine what Dumbledore is seeing. At 2:06 you can hear him saying "It's my fault... it's all my fault." He's seeing the duel between himself, Gellert Grindewald, and his brother Aberforth, during which his sister Ariana was accidentally killed when she was struck by a curse--but none of the three knew whose curse killed her. He's flashing back to the most horrible memory he has, and it's being used to torment him. That's why it's called the Potion of Despair. The fact that with one line "It's all my fault" they've revealed what Dumbledore is seeing remains one of the most impressive narrative moments in the entire series for me.

What makes this scene intense is the feeling that once Dumbledore drank the potion, his sanity and calm demeanor vanish in an instant. However long it took Dumbledore to drink it all, Harry is completely alone
@MetaITurtle

It took alot of strength for both of them. Harry would not have been able to drink it. Dumbledore took his place because he is older like he said, it would be considered abuse if he were the one forcing Harry to drink since he's 15 or 16 here. So it makes sense.

I'd speculate that it's more than 1 memory, it's *all* of his worst memories, and the accumulated guilt, together: 1. The memory and guilt for his sister's death being an excellent start. 2. The memories of when he might have seen Grindelwald for what he was, and the guilt he carries of refusing to see it before it was too late. 3. The memory of when he first met Tom Riddle, the chances he may have had as his teacher while watching him grow up to help him - like how he took a special interest in helping Harry over the years - and the guilt of not doing anything, or not doing enough. 4. The memory of each time he learned of the death of a fellow Hogwarts teacher, student, and friend - starting with Moaning Myrtle - and the guilt of having not somehow prevented those deaths.

Truly shows just how twisted and disturbed a person Tom Riddle became, keeping himself immortal with the horcruxes and what it would have taken to find one, let alone destroy it. Dumbledore befriended a wizard named Gellert Grindelwald when he was young, and they wanted to change the world order, they wanted wizards to rule over both wizards and muggles, with some good natured, wise wizards as leaders. However they believed they could not achieve that without some violence/coercion and their motto became "For the Greater Good" as in the ends would justify the means. One time Aberforth (Dumbledore's brother who's in the last movie) had a disagreement with Grindelwald, who used the Cruciatus curse on him. Albus stepped in to defend his brother, and the three had a duel. Sometime during the duel, a curse hit Albus and Aberforth's sister, Ariana, who died. Grindelwald escaped, and Dumbledore was tormented his whole life by the fact that he didn't know who had actually hit her with a spell, thinking it may even have been him who killed her.

Really ? I thought Michael Gambon phoned it in in this scene. He's really not trying very hard. This scene is meant to be distressing, and scary. Dumbledore is meant to be facing terrifying visions, and begging for death. Instead he reacts as if the potion tastes not very nice, and that is all. Nope - overall Gambon did a terrible job as Dumbledore. You can tell from his performance that he has no interest in / has never read the books. Possibly the only casting mistake in the franchise.
@Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
@Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay 8 жыл бұрын
Well yes, of course the kids are going to be shit. But they did so well in the adult casting (Richard Harries was a perfect Dumbledore) I'm surprised Gambon got through the net, that's all... he's fine in other things - just shite in this.
@Billybohilly
@Billybohilly 7 жыл бұрын
+Jay Dumbledore is supposed to be a god-like wizard. Seeing him terrified and scared from drinking the poison would take away from the perception built upon his character for the last 5 books. I think Michael Gambon actually made the correct choice for the character to show him struggling to finish it, but powerful enough to just barely overcome the nightmare visions. It doesn't fit his character to show fear and we would probably be making fun of his performance if he showed himself scared in a nightmare. Trust me, these actors put a lot more time thinking of every detail of their characters than you.
@Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
@Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay 7 жыл бұрын
Billybohilly Quite the opposite, this scene is there to show someone previously presented as all-knowing and seemingly invincible as being nothing more than a fragile human man. It is this difference that makes the book scene effective. If you want to see how this scene should be played, listen to Stephen Fry doing the audiobook version. His (audio only) performance is about 100 times more effective than Gambon can manage with film. Stephen Fry put the work in, Michael Gambon didn't, and all the evidence we need is in the results.
@Billybohilly
@Billybohilly 7 жыл бұрын
+Jay Since everyone including Harry considered Dumbledore invincible, I definitely got his fragility from this scene. I just don't think it fit the character of Dumbledore throughout the 5 movies to be screaming in fear and terrified in this scene as you suggest. Showing Dumbledore's fear is shown by his weakness begging Harry to kill him. This all powerful wizard was brought down to weakness and potential death all by drinking the poison. It works better in the movie for Dumbledore to be weakened battling back his fear rather than expressing complete terror and helplessness. Additionally considering we can't see what his biggest fear is, the scene would turn completly goofy on the big screen with the more serious tone of the Half Blood Prince.

I was really impressed with this scene, both in the book and film. The metaphor of having to drink the cup of wrath is a potent one that abounds in the annals of Celtic and Germanic folklore, and of course also Semitic mythos via Jesus' Agony in the garden. The young fledgling son/protegee figure being forced to see it's carried out is so incredibly powerful here. Seeing the father figure he once thought invincible forcibly ground down like a stone tower swept out to sea - AGH! I love it.

I did cry at the end of the book... I know a bunch of people don't like Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. I used to find him a bit rough in the very begining, but then I totally fell for his performance. IMO Gambon gave Dumbledore a lot of strength and toughness. As other personae who went through terrible things (Sirius, Snape f.i.), Dumbledore had to be tough and somehow... cold-blooded. His childhood was traumatic and he lived a lonely life afterwards.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince came out in 2009. Since Dumbledore is a supporting role, you must mean Best Supporting Actor. It was won that year by ‘American’ actor Christoph Waltz for playing Hans Landa in Quentin Tarrantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds.’ I think Michael Gambon was great as Dumbledore…much better than people seem to think. But he was NOT better than Waltz in ‘Basterds.’ And last I checked, Waltz is Austrian. So what politics do you mean?

If you listen closely to Dumbledore, he quietly repeats "it's my fault" relating to the time Dumbledore, Aberforth and Grindelwald got into a big fight which accidentally killed his sister, it's not known who cast the spell that killed her but here the potion is creating the scenario where Dumbledore believes he did it, dark stuff.

You know i give serious acting chops to Micheal Gambon for this scene because he didn't really ever read the source material when playing Dumbledore and yet here he does a FLAWLESS job of capturing Dumbledore's anguish and torment for the part he played in his sister's death, its fantastic and show's that he was perfectly capable of making the role his own.

This scene is so powerful because prior to this we see Dumbledore as this wise and powerful character , one that seems to know all and always has a level head on his shoulders. It’s so jarring to see a character like this in such a vulnerable state that is quite literally the opposite of what his character is actually like
