The theme that runs through HBP is also used in a song from a deleted scene where the choir would sing 'In Noctem' a half English-half Latin song about never forgetting loved ones. It fits in with a sequence in which the teachers of Hogwarts prepare to protect the school after receiving information that death eaters have infiltrated the school. Shivers every time.
@GoodBloodGames8 жыл бұрын
Yes! I'm so glad you brought that up. I was trying to find a way to add In Noctem into the video but was too left-field as it's a deleted scene. The lyrics with the melody are just so powerful. I feel like the music is the most overlooked part of a movie. Most people praise the actors and directors for the movie being a good movie, but without the music it would just be a story without emotions or excitement... That's very sad.
@Fyreflier8 жыл бұрын
I always say that when my family get on at me for wanting to listen to film scores. "Uh there's no words", "I don't want to listen to HTTYD", "How do you even sing along to it?" But music's so important; you can have the best actors, the best director, the best set design, the best props, the best costumes, the best CGI, everything can be perfect - but if the music's wrong or bad, the audience can't get emotionally invested. It's easier to get an emotion across or forge connections in the mind with auditory cues than visual. And that's why I've been listening to the Fantastic Beasts score on loop for nearly a week - James Newton Howard got it spot on.

In the more recent years I've been thinking that the iconic Harry Potter theme is so very appropriately named "Hedwig's Theme." I used to think wth because Hedwig's not the main character as a kid but later on as I grew up and when Hedwig became the first living being to willingly sacrifice her life for Harry for Harry to see and remember, I realized what Hedwig symbolized. Hedwig was no mere pet; she was a companion and a symbol of connection, affection, innocence, and most importantly hope....and when she died....it was an indication of the lost of all of which she was a symbol for.

@@lara.3183 I hate the way Rowling justifies crap like this. If anything symbolized the death of Harry's childhood, it was the years he spent abused by the Dursley's that robbed him completely of a childhood, or when Cedric was murdered right in front of him. Hedwig should never have died, and I'll never forgive Rowling for so ruthlessly and needlessly throwing her away. Same goes for Tonks and Lupin. Lupin was such a tortured soul, and had only just found the love and acceptance of a family.

@@stephaniemitchell8509 I hate Rowling as much as the next guy but I have to defend her here, Hedwigs Death is needless and ruthless I agree, but so is the death of any loved one, death is tragic, you can't keep everyone in your story alive and you also can't just kill the unimportant people. imagine the fight against the dark lord would have left every big character alive, it would make no sense. Harry should have stayed dead but I understand how hard it is to kill off your own character.

This was strongly encouraged when I listened the life performance of the first movie in the Netherlands. I never knew composers took all things like this into account. I'll be on the look out it in the next FB film. I noticed in the Main Titles for FB that the latter part of it, the part with a springy feeling of joy very closely resembles Dumbledore's Army from Order of the Phoenix, which sparked the feeling of rebellion and hope. It is played at first as Newt's boat comes into New York so it gives the viewer not only a feeling of nostalgia but a surge of adventure. The rest of the score seemed to me to be a rewritten version of a couple more Potter themes. I heard Dragon Flight along the way which was played at a time when there was a rush of adrenaline from the characters and from you, and also a few bars of Hedwig's Theme which I believe reminded the viewers why they were there, at the same time informing them that someone else was here to replace Harry. In just the first few scenes, the composer has managed to make the audience feel nostalgia, fear, excitement and hope with just the music.
@RohannvanRensburg7 жыл бұрын
I didn't either, until I started composing. One has to realize that just about any craft takes an almost absurd amount of dedication and attention to detail. If you think this is impressive look at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2ilnKB8bah9prM Williams and the composers here are undoubtedly brilliant (Williams obviously being the pinnacle in the minds of most), but Shore's LOTR score dwarfs these in scope. The Lord of the Rings film music consists of over 10 hours of *continuous* playtime, with close to 200 motifs (themes). Themes represent particular people, places, concepts, etc, and interact with one another. For example: a) The Fellowship Theme builds as members are added, falters when doubt is sown, and when the Fellowship breaks, is never again played to in its full b) The Isengard theme never develops, all it does is invade and interrupt other themes c) I believe it was the Fellowship theme -- it contains 9 notes (9 members) d) Folk instruments are often pulled in from cultures Tolkien drew from -- i.e. the Hardanger fiddle is used for the Rohan theme, which is a microtonal instrument unique to Norway. Etc.

In order for a movie to be as good as Harry Potter or LOTR, it must have very good music that not only adds to the story, but also tells it.

In this video, we explore how the composers behind Harry Potter have used music to send us different messages. I just want to point out that it was an act of love for Dumbledore that made that dark mark in the sky dissolve in Half Blood Prince. Good ol' love.

Brilliant! There are so many things I'd like to say. First of all, I got into movie scores (which has been one of the best things I've ever done) because of Harry Potter's scores. I personally think Alexandre Desplat is my favorite composer. I mean in general, he has brilliant scores... but in the world of Harry Potter, all of them are great. Each one brought something special and unique to the series; John Williams, he's the master, he's the one responsable of every Harry Potter fan in the world getting goosebumps as we listen to Hedwig's theme, he's the original one, his score is classic,, magical and unforgettable. Patric Doyle did and excellent job in the Goblet of Fire; he gave the score that little twist needed for darker times. His music is more passionate and intense due to his certain way to play with the violin. "Harry in Winter" and "Cedric's death" are so beautiful and touching, being Cedric's theme even more heartbreaking while Harry in Winter is... not joyful, bur doesn't represent the same sorrow as the other one. Nicholas Hooper.... I think Half-Blood Prince has the best soundtrack of all movies. Sometimes it is touching and peaceful, (Harry and Hermione/When Ginny kissed Harry), but it can also totally break your heart. Dumbledore's farewell must be the saddest piece of music I've ever heard. Total Kudos for using it again with Snape's memories; it made the scene even sadder, more painful, touching, intense, a total soul-crushing. "Malfoy's mission" and Slughorn's Story are worth of a mention. "A drink of despair" is such as depressing and powerful as "Dumbledore's farewell" and it is the same used in "Sectumsempra" To me, that's the track of remorse, regret and sorrow; both Harry and Dumbledore are regretting what they have done, Harry regrets using Sectumsempra against Malfoy when he didn't know what that spell was for, he only knew it was for enemies, but he didn't know he could've killed him. And Dumbledore as he drank the green potion to get the locket; he was reliving his worst memory: Ariana's death. Brilliant as well. And Desplat, his music is exactly what it was needed for DH part 1 and 2, makes you feel nostalgic, makes you feel the danger, the aventure, solitude, isolation and hope (New Beginning). And James Newton Howard!!!!!! Fantastic Beasts was amazing. When Newt releases the Thunderbird! and when he says goodbye to Tina. Those tracks are so amazing! I could keep writing about Harry Potter scores all day long but I better stop. Anyway, amazing video.

you did miss a small point. At the end of Hedwig theme is a part signifies victory and it is played in all the victorious points of the franchise.
@lizzywin49157 жыл бұрын
Whenever I hear hedwigs theme the movies just seems....more magical. The music throughout the entire series and Harry Potter world make the magic really come to life.
@Luka11808 жыл бұрын
You can also say that Lockhart's Theme symbolizes him being a hack, a man who wants to be world famous, like Harry himself, because Harry is world famous after surviving the death curse, and one might consider Hedwig's Theme as Harry's own theme too. In conclusion: Lockhart is famous, but for the wrong reasons. Harry is famous, not because of what he's done wrong though. So Harry's/Hedwig's theme becomes a twisted version of itself with Lockhart.
@mischa26438 жыл бұрын
Lukas Sprehn another thing to note about Lockhart's theme and the way it comes back to Hedwig's (a twisted, pompous version) it is much like the way "his" exploits are a twisted, self-aggrandising version of another witch or wizard's deeds.

this is the only good video I found on the subject... it's very sad, but on the other hand this video is a GEM. It's so wonderful... I watch this at least once a week because it makes me really emotional and miss the movies especially the soundtracks... and it blows my mind every time knowing how well it was written thank you for that
@DrJackaloupe8 жыл бұрын
Small note: You misuse "anti-hero" when describing Lockhart. Anit-hero refers to a protagonist that is an outcast. This is precisely the opposite of what Lockhart is, a publically-well-regarded antagonist. If anything, Lockhart is closest to being an "Anti-Villain."
@GoodBloodGames8 жыл бұрын
I hear what you're saying. I'd argue that Lockhart is actually the perfect example of an Anti-Hero. An anti hero isn't necessarily an outcast, but a 'hero' that doesn't portray the classic hero qualities. Selflessness, kindness etc. An anti-villian would be Magneto. A noble cause but with immoral / evil methods.
@DrJackaloupe8 жыл бұрын
Right, but he's still missing out on the hero part.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire had tons of musical foreshadowing. There is a constant voldemort leitmotif playing in all the scenes where something goes wrong with harry indicating that these are plans made by the death eaters and voldemort himself. When Harry's name is revealed in the goblet of fire for example. And it plays in the graveyard when harry sees the name "tom riddle" on the tombstone. Patrick Doyle was a genius.
