If they race swap Snape, it will give his childhood disagreements with others in his year a distasteful overtone and detract from the original Dark Arts intention of it. I know its 'on trend' to bring race into everything, but this is a can of worms that really should be left alone.

right?! besides prequels has less chance of flopping, we dont have anything to compare whit. while ever actor and actress in this reboot will be compared to the movies. they could have easily have done a show about the first wizening were, show us the marauders and characters like Voldemort, Lucius and bellatrix in their prime. the first war was darker than the second

If you must be race oriented, then look at the books and see what they say, and match as you can, rather than enforce your racism. If Snape is palid then he should be. if Lila Brown has darker skin in the book, then she should in movie/tv. Just do it.

If a characters skin color isnt integral to their role in the story, it doesn't matter. Even if the source material references a certain skin tone or race. My problem with Snape being POC is that its gonna give everything about his blood status a REALLY WEIRD RACIAL UNDERTONE. Especially if all of the Marauders are white.

(for context i am not a white guy) i am tried of studios pushing race changes. i grew up with many characters who have been race swapped and just because they might look like me doesn’t mean im gonna go watch it. i dont care if someone looks like me, i just want them to be as accurate as possible i personally think the whole diversity movement in entertainment is the reason for many new film failures

They need to be carefull, because IN CANON Snape is bullied by the Maraudes, he is ,IN CANON, racist towards Lilly and he is not the most friendly to Petunia. And that can leave a a bad taste in many people mouths. For me, I am fine with any choice they make as long they can bring book Snape to the screen.

I am not an absolute purist, but I think if the premise and promise is to “be faithful to the books” , be faithful to the books down to how a character is described.

Exactly. The new Snape does not have a hooked nose. He can have a wig for the hair, but the fact is Snape’s large, hooked nose is a very defining physical feature and the actor just doesn’t have one. I’m sure he’s a great actor, but he’s just not a book-accurate depiction of Snape, and we were told the whole point of doing the series was to be more accurate to the books.

@@amberbanuelos7053 we are in modern age they can add the nose in post editing since its not that hard in my opinion dumbledore has broken nose and they will have to make it too so it will make sense to make characters be played by actors that can act for mainly a double agent character and another thing is that they can change actor of snape anytime since they didnt start shooting and even if they do there is always a chance they will have to recast faitfull to the books isnt always best in terms of aperance of characters some things will look better as cgi effect than having actors that cant act mainly as proffesors

Of course, as should be the case for every cast member. They will never top or beat the performance of the actor who came before them, but if we have to deal with this reboot, making the role their own version of it as long as the actor keeps it in line with the source material is fine. If the actor tries to replicate the previous it might end up being a mess cause no matter how it turns out people are going to compare anyway, but as long as the casting isn't woke, and the director and script writers stay to the source material I'm willing to watch.

A live action interpretation of the Harry Potter books has already been done and done very well, so rather than just repeat themselves they should nake an animated Harry Potter series. This makes even more sense when you consider the enormous progress in artificial intelligence and text to video generation that has occurred in just the last year. This would also eliminate the problem of the kid actors growing up too fast

I personally want Peter Capaldi as Dumbledore. He can absolutely be that calm wise grandfather figure and he can definitely switch to a fierce Firey man. Where you can have this line from the book. -For the first time Harry understood why Dumbledore was the only one Voldemort ever feared. If you doubt me watch Doctor who I specifically enjoy hist softer moments like his last episode.

With casting, they can not and should not race swap or gender swap characters under any circumstances! Woke is killing media franchises and needs to stay tf away from Harry Potter, especially with main cast! This reboot should not exist in the first place, but it needs to remain faithful to the books, that is essential, no iffs buts or maybes, either that or just cancel it now cause the HP fandom isn't gonna let it slide.

Unlike other stories where they could excuse the race swap because there were no characters of a different races, that’s not the case in the Harry Potter universe, since there are other races in that universe, so the race swapping makes no sense for me for some characters if you have other roles to fill for that race that would be accurate with the character descriptions. I would like them to be faithful to the books and the descriptions.

I'm most concerned about whether or not they're going to actually adapt the source material or just tell their own story with a nod of names and places mentioned in the book. So many "adaptations" these days are that in name only with the show runners and writers deciding to tell their own stories instead and, frankly, I'm done with that to the point that I don't trust any statement that they're adapting anything. They're just doing their own thing and riding on the coattails of a fandom, hoping we won't notice or care.

To be honest, I will be among those who're gonna have a problem reconciling the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Snape, should he end up taking the role. And it's solely due to the fact his appearance doesn't fit the bill, when compared to the book description. But like you said, it's not the actor himself I'll be having the beef with, but the show's casting department instead. Also, as someone has already proposed in the comments, Essiedu would be a perfect casting for Kingsley, ngl... because damn, the guy can, indeed, act.

Personally I think they make a huge mistake in filming this at all. It would make so much sense in animating the series. Here are my reasons: 1. This will be a longwinded series in serveral ways, both that they need to secure actors that can remain for at least seven years. That includes both child actors that will age rapidly and elderly actors that sadly might pass during production (eg dumbledore, macgonagal, ollivander, hagridetc) . Then we also must consider that there are certain rules when it comes to child actors concerning allowed time on set. 2. Effects, such as spells and creatures, will be hard to keep to consistent and timeless quality over the span of the series. Consider that there will be developments in both formats, but by animating the series, it will be easier to lock down a certain style that will not feel dated if you were to rewatch the entire series later on 3. You are free to do as described in the books. This one is related to point 2, where animation will allow for a certain wimsy in characters, style, design etc. 4. By animating, the series will become its own thing instead of being compared to the amazing job that was done in the movies. Let's face the facts, no matter who is cast, there will be controversy and the actor will have a pair of humongous shoes to fill. 5. Might be easier to adjust for the international crowd. Eg is it the Sorcerer's stone or the Philosopher's stone? Also what would be the anagram for voldemort? Etc This is just my thoughts on this

There are a lot of characters i could picture beeing black. I personally could see Lupin, Tonks, maybe Cedric.. it could be all three of them and I wouldn't mind ...idk it wouldn't be 100% how it is in the books, but u know i could see that, it would kinda fit. But snape. I can't see it. In my mind he looks like an oldschool vampire that never saw any daylight. Maybe they'll prove me wrong but it seems to be an odd choice

I think my reservations with the casting of a black man as Snape is that, while they were at school, Snape was relentlessly tormented by James and the other marauders, which is uncomfortable enough with Snape being white!

I watched the movies before I read the series, so when I was reading the books, I could hear the original actors voice in my head....even if the lines weren't in the movie. That being said, I'm going to always be partial to Alan Rickman's and Maggie Smith's portrayals over anyone else. It will just be a case of seeing who they cast. Honestly, anyone who has done Shakespeare could play many of the characters...especially Snape.

In my opinion, setting Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as an example that some roles can’t be outdone is wrong, because that’s exactly the concept he undermined - he played Arthur Fleck superbly, gave a performance that left the other Jokers not unparalleled.

One of the hardest part for them to cast people is how many years it was part of audience life and even worse, how much it was pushed over the years after the movies. When you have one film, and you make reboot in 20 years, people dont really get that much attached to characters, but Harry Potter is different, with 8 movies and absolute tons of content after them, people have the images of the actors engraved in their minds. One of the reason I thing, race swapping the most important characters is nearly impossible to do without recieving backlash. I can't really thing how they could change the main threes + Snape, Dumbledore, Weasleys, Voldemort and Sirius. Those characters are pivotal to the movies and you would need to be expectional actor to rewrite the image of those char in people heads, hard for any actor, but even more harder for diverse actor. As much as I don't like race swaps, the most important thing is the acting and until people see it, you can't judge the choices.

The mobile game handles diversity well with a few new characters. Really wish they had the courage and creativity to come up with a new story plot and not remake stuff. I believe people would be all over a new story set in the Hogwarts universe. Hire writers...!

Why are we doing a “new take” on characters who are firmly established? No one wants a new take, they want the characters that they know, to be portrayed in a believable and accurate way. If you don’t like the source material then create your own thing, don’t come in and mix it up to your liking. Every great fictional universe is ruined when a new custodian comes in to “make their mark” and “bring something new”. If you want something new, create it yourself, don’t pull the threads from a nearly 3 decade old story and try pass it off as a “reimagining”.

There are a LOT of conservatives who love Harry Potter and support JK Rowling and hate seeing their favorite series be torn to shreds by DEI and wokeness. Believe it or not, Harry Potter didn't just appeal to liberals. The people who want to cancel JK (the radical left) will not watch the show no matter what, and conservatives along with those who simply want an accurate adaption of the series will also not watch the show if its super woke. They will be left with a small sliver of people who LOVE woke TV shows and who aren't boycotting JK for her political views.

I know HBO will do their best. Fans will get uses to any actor they see playing the parts as long as they don't deviate to much from the original script. For instance turning Dumbledore into a clown or Hagrid into a midget, etc.

I think Snape will be the hardest roll to cast. No matter who they cast there will be strong comments from true Potterheads. I personally am not sure it’s been long enough to allow fans to accept it. We will see.

book snape and movie snape are different and movie snape is def written to be more likeable in terms of not content but literally just personality. so there is hope if its to be a book accurate adaptation that any other actor who is talented could create their own version of snape that is good.

Why make Snape black for no reason? You might as well make Vernon Dursley a trans woman, or Dumbledore Chinese-American. If anyone objects, I guess that only bespeaks a prejudice against these groups. Faithful and inclusive do not go hand in hand. It's one or the other. I just want something close to the books but I know they are going to make some characters different which is fine if it doesn't break the story. We know that they are going to make someone gay I just hope it doesn't break the story because I am not able to think of a character that can be gay without changing the story

If they go woke they will go broke. That's how I see it. Changing Snape's race or any character for that matter, to appease the DEI crowd, will make this a complete failure. Keep the orthodoxy of the material and don't try to piss off all the people who made this story an international phenomenon. It is perfect the way it was written, don't let a showrunner inject their stupidity into it. The story is there! Complete and finished, unlike Game of Thrones, incomplete. We all know what happened when D & D had to actually start writing for the show once the source material ran out, disaster! I hope JK doesn't fall prey to the woke mind virus and stays true to her vision. Don't mess this up!

Snape needs to have a presence not many posess im afraid..... Race aside! Papa Looks to nice and he dosnt give me that kind of heavyness Snape needs :/ If he lost a bunsh of weight and looked older than his age it would kinda fit more into my picture of snape (im not saying he should, that can be dangerous.....) Both Rickman and Smith had the presence to make anyone listen and THAT is so important!!! He looks and feels like a teddy bear in comparison

Race overall really isn’t important. I won’t like it cause it’s not how snape looks in my mind as I imagined the character growing due to the books description.Alan Rickman was believable in my mind and helped immerse me in the movies but is race essential to the character absolutely not. the guy could put on an amazing performance. I didn’t like the dumbledore recast in third movie but he grew on me. Casting this guy isn’t gonna be enough to make me not watch the show. I wish they would cast people that at least fit the description of the character as the book describes them but so long as they stay true to the story that’s all that matters to me. I personally don’t think this show should even be made I mean movies one and two are pretty darn close to the book. midnight duel in sorcerers stone and the death day party in chamber would be some cool additions but really seasons three and four are where the show will really shine. What we really need to look out for is them adding crap not in the books to pad the show. They start messing with the story by adding in stuff I’m out.
