My mum sent some flowers to Sir Harry when he was appearing at Talk of the West, in Cornwall. A few days later the florist asked mum to come to the shop as there was a letter for her. Harry Secombe had taken the trouble to write a personal thank you letter to my mum and sent it to the florist to pass on to her. What a gentleman. Mum treasured that letter for the rest of her life.

I met Harry Secombe when he was filming Highways in Cambridge soooo many years ago now. I was playing in the Salvation Army band for the show, and it was a great privilege to film with him. Lovely, lovely man, and a genuine kind soul. He was always laughing and making everyone else laugh all that day!!

I grew up in Sutton Surrey and worked in Sutton for quite a while, Harry Secombe lived in Sutton just outside the town for a while he was often seen walking about the town speaking to everyone. I saw Sir Harry on stage in the 1960s in a show called 'London Laughs'. He did a scene from his marvellous Mr.Pickwick musical which was very colourful with a carriage and ponies and he sang 'If I ruled the world', of course. He always seemed to be such a charming man with a very infectious laugh.

Hello Paul. Harry Secombe had an amazing singing voice🎼 My Mum would get annoyed if he was on a programme, and he would go into comedy routines, as she just wanted him to sing!! Another interesting video📹 about a performer who is sadly fading from people’s memory. Such a simple memorial stone, for such a great all round entertainer.

Absolutely love this guy, especially when he was on songs of praise. What amazes me most is I know one day we all have to go and our final resting place is going to be greater than others, but I was shocked to see such a large man/personality have such a simple, small stone x just brings it into reality that one day we are here and the the next, just in the open, relaxing, chilling out under the stars literally. what an excellent observation on the passage of life for people of "our" generation. Saw HS twice in real life: 1. at the opening of a garage in the village purchased by the then retired cricketer Ken Barrington when they had a celebrity gathering and party. My mum managed to get someone to get his autograph for me. I will never forget the excitement at the bit of paper coming back out of the window. 2. once at Effingham Golf Club where he used to be a member. That was home of the harry Secombe Golf Classic, which ran for 32 years until 1999 and was a pro/celebrity annual charity golf event. great for spotting people at, but hard to get into without paying what was a lot of money if you were a child on the lookout for "names". I also particularly respect and admire those people who have modest memorials. We are all the same in death no matter how famous you were in life. Also, a man of the generation where marriage for life meant just that, so slightly surprised not to see his wife with him now (she died 2017)?

What a Gentleman Sir Harry Seacombe was, extremely funny as part of the Goons Show, Neddy was the character that Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan bonce off of on the Goons and I remember when Harry became a Sir, Spike Milligan nick named him Circumference, he was brilliant on the Michael Parkinson show, he said once that he was the voice of Sanity out of the three of them, you don't realise how much you miss them until there not there any more, Sir Harry Seacombe will always be missed!

I remember that too, but it was “Michael Bentine’s Potty time!” ( what a crazy name for a program! Lol) ….I remember the sand on the circus tray for the flea circus bouncing up where a flea was supposed to have landed or fallen from the tightrope etc….such a comical mind to think of creating such a program, so then you understand more how Michael,Spike and Harry, plus Peter Sellers?( I think) all got on so well for the Goon show which was brilliant! Thanks for stirring the memories! Helen 🙋‍♀️👍x💐

@@helencheadle5285 Oh yeah now you're talking! The haunted house too with the tiny ghosts. The moaning monk and the ghostly invisible woman who throws herself out of a window every night. A forerunner of Lady Fanny from the series Ghosts. Michael designed all of those scenes and sets himself. He's forgotten by the uninitiated but we remember a talented comedy writer and inventor.

Unusual things? Yep! You FORGOT you filmed this one Paul?? Now THATS very unusual for you! Lol….(Poor Sir Harry). Just couldn’t resist teasing you. As always you took us to a beautiful restful place, and so many of us well remember Sir Harry playing tge part of The Beedle in Oliver Twist, and making poor little Mark Lester as Oliver, quake in his shoes! I also loved Sir Harry’s beautiful singing voice. I had the recording of him singing “I’ll walk with God” played at my fathers funeral, and it was really stirring. So..apart from forgetting what you have filmed, I’m looking forward to the other unusual things you mentioned at the beginning, and hope that won’t be long. Take care, and stay safe! Thanks for all you do. Love Helen 🙋‍♀️😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏👍🦋

Nobody ever had a bad word to say about Sir Harry he was just one of the worlds nice people. His singing? He was easily on a par with Pavarotti. All celebrities die at some point but a lot of them to me seem "Oh dear how sad never mind". When Harry went it really did mean someone special had gone. Harry, Spike and Peter along with Michael are now hopefully having endless pints and laughs in Jimmy Graftons eternal pub. Cheers Sir Harry.

I grew up in Cheam, Surrey where Harry Secombe lived for a while. His house was actually between Cheam and Sutton. The house has gone, but the outer wall is still there. The Secombe Centre is about a mile away from there. It used to be the hub of social life with two theatres and a bar, but it's sadly closed now, unloved and overgrown with weeds.. An amazing actor!

Now that's a modest grave and typical of the man. Some of us grew up watching and listening to him, and he was Mr Bumble in Oliver! (1968). Sir Harry often visited serving troops, and he was known for sitting and chatting with them. His wartime service is under-stated but he served throughout WW2 and went through Sicily, North Africa and Italy.

I’m from Harry’s home city Swansea. My grandmother on my dad’s side went to school with Harry and, coincidentally, my mother used to live a few minutes away from him in Surrey where he lived in his final years and buried. 👍👍 Harry's brother, Fred, as mentioned, was Rector at St. Mary's Chruch, Hanwell, Ealing for many years. He too was also a great entertainer, (amateur) not only through his sermons, but he founded the Hanwell Parish Church Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He produced and performed in all the G&S operettas, and upon completing the full canon, Harry was in the audience in 1981 before Fred retired back to Swansea.

Spike Milligan told of his first meeting with Harry in the desert during the war. Both were in the artillery and apparently one day Spike and his team were moving a big gun when it 'got free' and rolled down a hill into some tents housing Harry's platoon. Luckily no one was injured but of course this brought some colourful language from Harry and his mates who were very lucky. The story is in Spike's book 'Adolf Hitler, my part in his downfall' which is a brilliant read. It is sad to see Harry's little plaque. Great guy by all accounts. I do enjoy these videos. Well done.

The good thing about your videos, is that they nudge us to remember the characters (not all good) that played a part in the world we, grew up in. Hi Paul and thanks for this channel. If you are in Edinburgh, Scotland in the near future, there's the grave of James Finlayson who founded a cotton mill to Tampere, Finland in 1828 (The company began as machine shop in 1820 but changed to cotton mill industry in 1828) . It marked the beginning of the industrialization of the city and subsequent population growth. He sold the company in 1836 but demanded that his name had to be kept in the name of the company. The former factory buildings are nowadays {those are younger than his lifetime} in other use but also act as a landmark. At the peak the factory had 600 spindles, and also the first electric light bulb of Finland was lighten up in the factory complex in 1882. He died in Edinburgh in 1852 and he was buried at Newington Cemetery, according to Wikipedia. I know he's pretty much unknown outside Finland but without him the city of Tampere would most likely look very different. The plaque to his grave was placed by the company Finlayson oy in 1970 as the company celebrated its 150th anniversary. Finlayson still designs e.g blankets in Finland, its HQ is in Helsinki but the production is abroad as far as I know. The former factory area and the part of the city they lie in, are still called Finlayson. And again thanks for you work and greetings from Finland.

Great video Paul make me sad to see Sir Harry Secombe's final resting place , his recording of "if I ruled the world " was a masterpiece and a record that reminds me of my late father.

Songs of praise filmed on the QE2 Harry hosted it my aunt and uncle were on the QE2 then they meet Harry and he was lovely to them and everyone else. My aunt and uncle told me that with Harry you got what you saw. When he was knighted he nicknamed him self sir conference typical Harry.
