Jackson didn't hire a voice stand-in for the singing because "they didn't pay him enough". It was because his contract wouldn't allow him to sing. This is also the reason he was credited as "John Jay Smith". Neither was his decision. The probable reason he sat still was because he was a painfully shy and private person. Also, maybe he was (justifiably) angry because Castellaneta was not on time.

Yeah i think there was actually a legal problem that permitted MJ from singing that little Billie Jean bit himself. But he did in fact voice the character but again legal issues made it impossible to credit him. Or be shown as himself. This was a time when celebrities in the Simpsons weren't throw-away gags you could toss in but they all often played a role. Harvey Fierstein as this strong guidance Carl in the episode where Homer grew hair and got promoted, Dustin Hoffman as Exchange Teacher Mister Bergstrom or Danny DeVito as Homer's Halfbrother Herbert Powell for example. When they started adding people as them self (like the late great Adam West) things had already changed and it was a lot more acceptable.

No, it's just the media spreading bad things about Michael again. His record label wouldn't allow him to sing because of his contractual obligations. It had *nothing* to do with Michael 'not being paid enough' to sing. He still wrote and produced the song, and asked not to be credited for it.

The other actor to play singing version of Michael he’s talking about is Kip Lennon, which is believed to say Michael wanted him to play Michael singing parts to pull a joke on his brothers to think Michael actually sings in the episodes. Plus at the end of the episode with Michael and Bart singing “Happy Birthday Lisa” done by Lennon and Nancy Cartwright which was done, that song was actually written by Michael himself which he recorded in his own voice as a demo.
