If a trans woman wears a dress they would say that is just a man in a dress. If a cis guy wears a dress they go crazy saying he is feminising men, and that they will be women I don't get it.
@ramielstudios29534 жыл бұрын
I think that's because they believe that a trans woman is not a woman and a cis man who doesn't follow traditional male attire is not a man. Seriously what DOES make you a man or a woman? If you say that you are a man, then you are a man, if you say you are a woman, you are a woman. Some people just happen to like or prefer other clothing and thats okay. I haven't finished the video yet, but here's a piece of my day today, talking about clothes: I'm a transgender boy, and normally I wear more "masculine" clothes to school, and to hang out with friends. But yesterday, I found a really cute yellow dress in my closet, and really wanted to wear it to school. So I did. I felt comfortable in it, so I'm planning on putting it on more often. My mother doesn't accept the fact that I am a trans person, even tho I've explained it to her more than a hundred times. She was MORE exited than me because I was wearing a dress. I think she is hopping for me to "be normal (in her words)" again, but obviously I'm not going to change the way I feel. *I am a boy.* Just because I'm wearing a dress, or a skirt, or a crop top, doesn't mean I'm less boy than others. If you reached here, thanks for reading! Hope you are doing ok today, stay safe!✨💕

It's internalized misogyny, plain and simple. This sort of mindset relies on the following beliefs: 1) Masculinity is inherently more valuable than femininity. It is appropriate for anyone to dawn this form of expression because they perceive it as a form of strength or authority. 2) Femininity is inherently less valuable than femininity. They perceive femininity as a sign of weakness. 3) Women are expected by default to be weak and submissive, so it is fine for a women to present femininely. 4) Men are expected to be strong and dominant no matter what, so they are obligated to present masculinely. 5) Anyone can present masculinely, but only women can present femininely. There are a lot of double standards at play here, and it's a clear demonstration of how the patriarchy and sexism negatively effects everyone, regardless of gender. The people who hold these beliefs are often very anti-feminist, as they think feminism is a misandrist movement. They think we are trying to get rid of all forms of masculinity. However, feminism is actually helpful to men as well, since it fights toxic, compulsory masculinity, while encouraging healthy masculinity.
@clashmustache3 жыл бұрын
@@enfysiridescent 1) If you want to succeed in the world then yes, it helps to be a bit more masculine. That's cause the world is a cruel unforgiving place and masculine traits are better suited to handling that. 2) That's a very vague statement. For example if you are fighting a war, than Masculinity is waaaay more valuable to be masculine. But if it came to raising children, looking after others, or many others then feminity is more valuable. It's not that feminity is a sign of weakness, it's more that masculinity is more of a sign of strength. That doesn't mean that people think feminity is weak, they just think masculinity is stronger. 3) Very few people think that, the only people who think that are those that have been brainwashed from a young age to think that the patriarchy is everywhere and out to get you. 4) This is one point where I will agree with you slightly. Yes Men are expected to be tough and not show that much emotion. But that also is changing, Take me for example I'm a white "cisgender" male but I can be very emotional at times but also very masculine at times but yes I will admit that you have a point. 5) Trust me when I say this is changing rapidly. Infact, most people aren't that concerned about gender stereotypes anymore. Look, gender stereotypes are not the fault of the "patriarchy". They're actually biologically wired into us because of generations of us living like this.

And maybe I was conditioned by the trans flag colours of the cover of the album (lol), but - Oh. This song. Describes so so so well (but in reverse, kinda) my experience with gender non conformity. And masculinity. And femininity. And I don't know if that was his intention ( and I don't care at this point ) but I could write an essay analyzing what this song means to me, from a trans perspective. I encourage people who haven't listened to it to give it a try? It's really subtle but also powerful interpretated in that what imo.

So I wouldn't take the song as evidence that he is trans, however I think it definitely is about his own feminine side. I can only imagine how big the pressure to perform and present masculine must be if you're in the public eye as much as Harry is. It's great that he found the confidence to leave behind the narrow confines of binary gender presentation. Only time will tell whether he identifies as trans or is a gender non conforming cis man. One thing is for certain, though - he created a song that resonates with GNC and trans people alike and is embracing an aesthetic that will hopefully encourage more men to step forward and accept their feminine side as a source of strength. Oh my gods, that Ben Shapiro burn is what I needed, thank you for that ♥ Dude has a higher pitched voice than me and I'm not even on T. I used to think I couldn't transition because my hourglass shaped body was "too feminine" and I'd never "pass", and because even though I never identified as female I still like certain feminine-coded things (jewellery and nail polish). But then I saw non binary culture, people being androgynous and rocking it, experimenting with gender expression, ignoring body shape or incorporating it into their outfits. And I remembered japanese pop culture, which I've always loved, and how men in the visual kei scene wear nail polish and eyeliner. Hell, Kain Highwind, one of my favourite Final Fantasy characters, got a statue that has purple nail polish and he's a knight with a lance that is manly af. So I decided that gender non conforming trans men can be a thing (I used to identify as transmasculine non binary person but I feel comfortable with seeing myself as a guy). And every time someone like Harry Styles goes and shows people that clothes have no gender, that fashion is about self expression and fun, I feel a weight is lifted both off the shoulders of cis men and trans men who feel they can't pass or don't want to.

why should clothing have gender? and why should it be "feminine" or "masculine", it's just clothing mate :'(
@MellowJelly3 жыл бұрын
Something as simple as clothing can make us feel very different about ourselves, that is for sure, but it should not be taken too seriously. What another person wears should not be taken seriously, I mean. It's nobody's business but their own, realistically

i love, love, LOVE this video!! honestly one of my faves that you’ve done:))) great points were made, especially the one relating to how damaging it is for men when expected to be masculine in a certain way by society. it will always boggle my mind that some find clothing so offensive and definitive!

I absolutely love Harry Styles for giving me the opportunity to have someone to point to when people question me saying I'm a trans man just because I choose to wear dresses sometimes. I mean, it's F* hot here, even hetero cis men would love the oportunity to wear dresses so they don't have to melt in their clothes, and I'm not passing the one I have. I should start listening to his music, I never have, maybe I'll enjoy it. =D

What I hate is the double standard when it comes to me (an afab person) wearing feminine and masculine clothes. I tend to switch back and forth between masculine styles and feminine styles. When I do this, no one really bats an eye but if one of my male friends were to bounce back and forth like me they'd be demonized. It really pisses me off that I could wear a suit, but if a men wears a dress suddenly it's such a big deal. Clothing is not gendered, it's just clothing, and more people need to realize that.

Well I can tell you that this has finally convinced me to add Harry Styles last album to my Spotify. I already had one of the songs in my favorite buuuuuut I'll admit I'm a stubborn ass and was kind of "but he was from a boyband!" about the whole thing. Though regardless of what I've thought of him as far as the boyband thing went, I have respected his habit of not giving a fuck when it came to gender norms. That's especially refreshing with someone so young and popular.

The thing is that these people like to attach gender to colors, clothes, hairstyles, hobbies, interests, habits and names, when in reality none of these things have a gender and should therefore not be gendered at all. I believe that humans would be way happier if they could do whatever they want without people constantly judging if something is "appropriate" for their sex assigned at birth. Seriously we shouldn't care about stuff like this. The fact that I don't feel confident enough to say that I might be agender and would like to referred to as Austen just because some people would not understand this. I should not feel pressured to withold that information about myself just because some people don't get it.

I feel the same. I'm Pangender and Pansexual and I still feel uncomfortable talking about it or expressing it. It's taken me sooo much time to just accept myself for who I am. And it's because of the constant pressure to fit in with society. I hope you're doing okay♡ I accept you. Keep staying strong.

@@euphoria7372 Figuring out your genderidentity, sexual attraction and romantic attraction takes a long time because you have to find out what describes you best and being comfortable with it. I have to say that accepting that I'm asexual and aromantic was a lot easier than genderidentity. Especially when I think about that all of this happened this year and I'm also trying to sort and kinda label my mental health struggles alongside all of this.
@euphoria73724 жыл бұрын
@@PhoenixAusten Literally same! The last I think six months I've been suffering from panic attacks JUST because I couldn't figure out my genderidentity. It takes a hell of a lot of time. I'm glad you're doing what makes you comfortable♡ The year has been really hard. I hope next year's better♡

I think that men who can wear "feminine" clothes and still be confident in their masculinity are the real manly men. I'd love to get to the point in my transition where I can wear a skirt and still feel manly 😁
@MellowJelly3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree lol! If that is one of your goals, that's a pretty great goal. I believe in you and I also hope I get to a point in my own confidence where wearing 'unfavorable' clothing doesn't bother me at all. the fabric itself shouldn't determine how masculine or feminine someone is ~

Besides all of what your said, which is true, there is nothing wrong with femininity, either. Femininity is lovely. Masculinity is lovely. They are both ephemeral concepts, hard to describe, and have nothing to do with strength or weakness. But they should have everything to do with, as you said, expressing yourself in a healthy way.

Hey Moe, I'm really happy whenever I see your videos and I love that you start to get some more recognition! Your videos always have this comfortable vibe, even though the topics you discuss are usually rather serious. I do believe however, that by "the East" Owens meant the middle east rather than East Asia. It makes her way of thinking more logical, but nowhere less ridiculous, of course.
