I totally understand why everybody is saying Matilda is there favourite song in the album because it is very relatable.....it's comfortable it's not aggresive and it's like he's saying to us that it's okay no matter what you choose but it's also okay if you choose yourself now, love yourself now, leave people behind who didn't love you, there are no expectations anymore and nobody can hurt you anymore....i love the vibe of this song too...this album is a masterpiece ✨✨❤️

"you showed me a power that's strong enough to bring sun to the darkest days" hit so hard, so so hard. It's always people who are depressed and abused become one of the kindest people you will ever meet, theres something about them never being shown love ever since childhood but never stop seeking it and giving it, if you don't think that's strong, I don't know what is anymore...

the line "its none of my business, but it's just been on my mind" is my favourite from this song. it's just so comforting and self aware and it brings you back to the thoughtfulness of this whole song. 'matilda' is a letter of comfort, a song that says 'i see you' and 'it's okay.' he doesn't tell you what to do, he doesn't try to fix matilda's problems, he's just letting you know that he's listening and he's there. fuck i love this song

Same. I had a friend for years (we don't talk much anymore since I moved away) and about halfway through the time I knew her, I realized her father was an alcoholic and abused her and her 3 siblings. And they just never mentioned it cause then they'd end up in the system (her mom passed away a long time ago) I always wanted to ask her how she was doing or say something when I slept over, but I felt like it wasn't my place. And I never told anyone what I knew. But I made sure she knew she could call me if she ever needed me or come to my house if she needed to get out of hers. I keep up with her on social media. We're both 19 now, she's moved out of her house, took her little siblings with her, doesn't seem to have contact with her dad, and is doing what she loves while taking care of her family; and I'm so happy for her

@@nicoledambach5457 Hi, yeah I have. I've actually reached out to her a couple times, but unfortunately, I think she wants to leave everything behind from those early teenage years and I guess that includes us ? She doesn't answer my messages anymore, even if its a simple comment to a story on IG. She even distanced herself from her closest friends since childhood (and the other 3 girls are still super close). She seems happy though; she has friends she loves, she's going to school, and she's got her siblings. I would love to talk to her, but she doesn't seems to want to talk to me and that's ok. I'm just glad she at least hasn't unadded me on social media and that she's doing well :)

Not tryna be mean, but I think this song is about a little more than just being a middle child (even though that can be difficult sometimes). To me it sounds more like it's about something like a gay or trans person who have been called a degenerate by their deeply religious family or whatever. Something of that magnitude. Cause the "never showed you love" line hints at something worse than just feeling kinda left out because you're in between two siblings.

The way he talks about how she was treated not seeming alarming 'till now is my favorite part - it shines a light on how abusive and toxic families don't necessarily hurt us in a straightforward way. They don't need to physically hurt us to make us suffer; they don't even need to use offensive words. Hurt comes in many ways, sometimes disguised as love. It doesn't mean the damage isn't real, it doesn't mean that it won't make you cry until you sleep for many, many nights. For anyone going through this: you don't have to feel guilty for realizing you were mistreated, even if they never lifted a finger to harm you.

I was abused by my mom for years without realizing it. When I finally did realized I called quits and finally left which was like 7 months ago. It’s so hard because when people be like “what did she do” you can’t really explain. It’s not like she pushed me or hit me. It’s just the way she treated me, the way she looked at me, the way to talked to me, the opinions she had about me which really deeply hurt me. It’s the overall feeling she created of not being loved and being mistreated.

I don't personally live with a Matilda situation, I'm close with my family. This song heals me in different ways. I'm on the spectrum and suffer from anxiety, with other mental health issues. My own anxiety gets in the way of most family gatherings. Sometimes I feel so depressed I wanna harm myself, but I don't. I get impulsive intrusive thoughts from my OCD. Sometimes it's all too much and new situations overwhelm me. My family loves and accepts me, but sometimes they don't fully understand. Since everything they see of me isn't fully visible. I handle a lot of the pain in my head, like it's no big deal. Thank you Harry, for everything 💞

I relate to this song on a very personal level. Which is why I'll make sure my future kids never ever do. I'll be a better parent than my mom and dad( especially dad). I'll never ever hold them accountable for my bad temper. I'll always love them unconditionally, whether they're straight or not or whatever. They're my kids and I'll make sure they know how much I'll love and support them, no matter what. I'll make sure they have a fulfilling and happy childhood, one that doesn't make them sad or terrified whenever they think of it. Being a strict parent doesn't mean abusing your child or calling them unworthy of love. I'll make sure my future kids grow up to be respectful and kind humans. Moreover, I'll make sure I never ever turn into my parents. For anyone who's currently living in an abusive household: you will get out of there! Things will get better! it's a song for letting go and people who are unable to do so, it's a song for people whose childhoods were stolen, it's a song solely for crying, it's a song for people who got hurt because of how sentimental they are, it's a song for people who get attached too easily, it's a song for saying goodbyes and dealing with the past this is the best song of H's discography, it feels so personal since it is written like a comforting letter adressed to you, i cannot describe how special and important this one is to me

My girlfriend had a difficult upbringing, alcoholic deadbeat dad and a mother that resents her and pits her sister against her. It's tragic, this song makes her cry every time. I just hold her as her cries into my shirt. It's such a beautiful song and, despite my wholesome upbringing making it difficult to empathize, it touches me seeing the waterfall of emotions that pours from her heart. She finds comfort and resolution in these lyrics and I couldn't be happier. Screw her parents, she doesn't need their love. She is a better person than they could ever hope to be, despite their best efforts to keep her obedient to their will. I am grateful this is helping her let go of that toxicity. Thanks, Harry, you've gained a new fan.

Matilda is a book by British writer Roald Dahl. It was published in 1988. Sweet and bright little Matilda, a child of wondrous intelligence, is different from the rest of her family. Misunderstood by everyone and ignored at home, Matilda escapes into a world of reading, honing her skills, and exercising her mind so much that she develops telekinetic powers. Im not exactly sure that this is his inspiration for this song but you get my point. This is definitely a tear jerker. ❤️❤️🥲

This song is very personal to me it feels like someone reopened my old wounds. Even though I've been listening to Matilda repeatedly, I always burst into tears when I hear the chorus. My childhood was very lonely and my family never acknowledged me for anything I did. It caused me a lot of trauma and therefore it's very comforting to hear that I do not owe them anything just because we're relatives. Fortunately, I was able to realise that I'm also worthy of love and that my friends make me feel more at home than my family. And Harry, your album also feels more like Harry's Home than Harry's House! Thank you very much for this song ❤️ I will always root for you

You were riding your bike to the sound of "It's No Big Deal" And you're trying to lift off the ground on those old two wheels Nothing about the way that you were treated ever seemed especially alarming 'til now So you tie up your hair and you smile like it's no big deal You can let it go You can throw a party full of everyone you know And not invite your family, 'cause they never showed you love You don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up, mmh Matilda, you talk of the pain like it's all alright But I know that you feel like a piece of you's dead inside You showed me a power that is strong enough to bring sun to the darkest days It's none of my business, but it's just been on my mind You can let it go You can throw a party full of everyone you know And not invite your family, 'cause they never showed you love You don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up You can see the world, following the seasons Anywhere you go, you don't need a reason 'Cause they never showed you love You don't have to be sorry for doing it on your own You're just in time, make your tea and your toast You framed all your posters and dyed your clothes, ooh You don't have to go You don't have to go home Oh, there's a long way to go I don't believe that time will change your mind In other words I know they won't hurt you anymore as long as you can let them go You can let it go You can throw a party full of everyone you know You can start a family who will always show you love You don't have to be sorry for doing it on your own You can let it go You can throw a party full of everyone you know You can start a family who will always show you love You don't have to be sorry, no

"I had an experience with someone where, in getting to know them better, they revealed some stuff to me that was very much like, ‘Oh, that’s not normal, like I think you should maybe get some help or something.’ This song was inspired by that experience and person, who I kind of disguised as Matilda from the Roald Dahl book. I played it to a couple of friends and all of them cried. So I was like, ‘Okay, I think this is something to pay attention to.’ It’s a weird one, because with something like this, it’s like, ‘I want to give you something, I want to support you in some way, but it’s not necessarily my place to make it about me because it’s not my experience.’ Sometimes it’s just about listening. I hope that’s what I did here. If nothing else, it just says, ‘I was listening to you.’" -Harry Styles

I've only now discovered this song and not only does it hit close to home, but the fact that my name is Matylda really makes me feel like I'm finally being told all the things I needed to hear years ago. Before I was wiser and knew my self worth. This song is going to be on repeat for a very long time 😅

I'm not sure it's such a good idea to tell strangers that it's going to be "just fine". You don't kow them. Statistically for many it's not going to be fine. Many may end up harming themselves and/or others and/or become just as toxic. Some of those school shooters, for example, come from such toxic environments. Keeping that in mind can act as a reminder of what's at stake. Though too much of it can also make one hopeless. It's complicated.

@@somedudeok1451 I always suggest that they try to find a supportive figure, whether that be a teacher, counselor, therapist, friend, etc because having that support is absolutely vital. If you don’t have people you can talk to about what you’re experiencing, you will bottle it up until you explode. I was experiencing that when I was a teen, then I found a couple of friends and eventually opened up to them about it. In return one of them said she was dealing with an absent dad and an abusive mom, the other said she had neglectful parents. They could relate to some of my situations, and give good advice on how to handle them. I was able to give them some advice too. Without that support and connection, I probably would’ve ended up dead or a danger to others. My guess is murder-suicide would’ve been the path I took. It’s important to remind victims of abuse that there are still people on their side, people who understand. Humans are social animals, we need that connection when we’re completely healthy in every way, so we absolutely need it when we’re not.

This is my favorite song. The lyrics, the vocals, the music, the emotions, the lyrics and everything. Also, I loved the book Matilda by Roald Dahl when I was a kid and this song just kinda gives me the nostalgia of that book. This is such a comforting song.
