I think the realistic space marine in the colorful Jim Burns piece is based on a picture of Al Pacino during the final shootout in Scarface. I googled "Al Pacino Scarface shooting" and got images that match the look on his face and the way he's holding his gun, I knew it looked familiar. Ian Miller's "Marine Line" is so chilling, fantastic work!

John Blanche is such a great artist. His work for Games Workshop and especially the Fighting Fantasy Sorcery series had a huge impact on me as a kid. And Ian Miller, his work is pure nightmare fuel, it's as if he could channel dreams directly onto canvas.

Excellent Video as ever but my wife insists that I point out that the photo realistic space marine picture was also the cover of the D-ROK album Noise Marines (I am so proud). Also I think there was a Harry the Hammer figure released with 1st Ed Warhammer that looked exactly like the original art , I think you had to send off a voucher from the boxset.

I got "Harry's" mini from Citadel Miniatures Speciality (sic) Set - Set One Warriors of Chaos where his name was Uthmog Elvenbane. I think I got him circa 1984 but the set wasn't new out. The one I have is a sculpt faithfully based on the art, not the mini pictured in the Heroic fighters set, and predates plastic bases.

Agreed. It was a top standard quality for that time. That mini standed out, compared to others. Maybe cause he looks like half chaotic and half loyal. I should realy get black on my painting of that mini. Now that i have the skill to show him some respect.

The editing on your videos is always so good! Looks like an amazing exhibition, though I only recognise some of the later pieces. The way they're drawn quite small is common with watercolour illustrations; I was lucky enough to meet Judge Dredd artist Ron Smith and see some of his originals before he died and they were similarly small, intricate and amazing to look at.

I have long intended to write an article on how a line can be drawn the early GW and 80s fantasy art (especially FF work and ESPECIALLY John Blanche work) draws a direct line to the gothic, tragic fantasy of Dark Souls. I have a huge folder of art (and Dark Souls screenshots) set up ready for this, it's just on the pile with the 1000 other projects I want to work on...! Looks like a lovely exhibit, if I was still in the Midlands I'd be there like a shot, hopefully they'll be another display at some point in the future (or dare I suggest a tour...). A crucial and potentially poorly documented part of our history!

I love this art, especially the work of Ian Miller! (slight preference for the Fighting Fantasy collection as a lot of people, very popular in France at that time!) I'm quite sad to have missed the exhibition, but thank you for the vidéo ^^

I didn't realize so many of these were pen and ink (possibly etchings with watercolor?) until this video! I always thought the majority of the works in color were paintings on canvas. Wargames Foundry has some of the coolest fantasy models out there. I ordered their entire Orcling Raptor Rider regiment last year and it was a blast to paint. Was thinking about getting some of their other Orc and Goblin (and Troll) minis, but shipping to the US is killer. I hope you also picked up a rulebook for God of Battles while you were there!

This is very cool - it's also kind of mind blowing that GW hasn't already just dumped a bucket of money on their doorstep to acquire all these, literally iconic, art pieces and put on permanent display at Warhammer World.
@ScooterinAB2 жыл бұрын
They may already own a lot of them. I think Ian said the Crimson Fists one was a print, and since most of these would have been made form the company (not Brian specifically), GW likely has reproduction rights for the pieces they don't have the originals of.

Man, Harry the Hammer looks NOTHING like the Blanche pieces that are seared into my brain from the 2nd ed. books. Makes me wonder if his 40k stuff was cherry-picked for that particular aesthetic and how many other styles he has.
@ArbitorIan2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but my guess would be that being in the relatively stable position of Art Director for GW for so many years allowed him to find a specific style and hone in on it?
@nekrataali2 жыл бұрын
These are just my personal observations, so I could be wrong. Blanche was born in 1948, which would have made him around 35 when 1st. Edition Warhammer was released. That's fairly young for an established artist. It's not surprising he honed his style as he got older to what we know him for now. Picasso's blue period is from when he was 20 to 24 and he wouldn't go full-Cubist until he was around 28. Rembrandt was 34 when he worked on the 100 Gilder Print, which was one of his most important contributions to art. At nearly 50 is when he created what would later develop into Impressionism (some 200 years after his death). I think Chuck Close didn't even use color in his paintings until he was in his 40s or 50s.
