Honestly, I’d have a problem taking money from some one who’s broken down. It’s all part of the 4wd experience and I think most of us in the 4wd community would help where we can

The worst parasites in the 4wd world are the ones who sit on facebook recovery pages and someone asks for help. The person is then choosing to drive out on their own time, own car own equipment nobody holding a gun to their head, only to then turn around n be like yer cash thanks. Leeches.

Great video mate and great way to look at life when things go wrong. I remember being stuck having slipped my timing in the Paj out near the Blue Mountains. I had a trailer and was with the family and stuck at the bottom of a gully effectively. My Brother was on his P Plates and had no idea about towing or recovery so we ended up setting up camp at the bottom of these hills for 2 nights and had a blast. one of my most memorable camps to day. We ended up finding a couple other guys who towed (Skull dragged) me 7km up these steep hills and all back to the road where a Tow Truck could get me. Also Ive never had to use it but that Emergency Plus App is a great addition.

Great advice & great attitude! This year has been filled with ffs moments for us whilst camping & otherwise but it is how you deal with them that makes the difference. Rushed decisions often don’t fair well & if there isn’t a reason for urgency then taking a bit of time to work out the best plan always helps. The big diff between my husband & myself haha I am the calm one while he goes into panic mode, god help him if something happens to me! 🤣 Loved the Nissan comments 🤣 so true! Such an amazing campsite, so glad you all still got to enjoy your time together in such a beautiful location.

I love this video. Great practical advice. We've all broken down from time to time on holidays. I like the advice to relax, think it through, and plan it out and come up with the best solution. Sometimes sleeping on it over night, you come up with the best solution. As long as you have plenty of food and water, and shelter, you're in no hurry. no need to stress. never broken a 'diff' before. sounds like a bad seal though.

Hi Harry, glad to see you got out of your predicament safely but there are a lot worse places to have a breakdown. Let's hope the prado is back on the road soon but no one could foresee a problem like that with a bolt inside the "diff". Also a good app for emergencies is What 3 words I work in an Emergency Services Call centre and all operators are trained to use this app to locate people who travel and don't know where they are, it's also shown on the Emergency Plus App. Safe travels when your back on the road. Cheers

Very informative thank you Harry .. from the DIFF issue to the awning and wind damage, and especially the communication options for safety! Bloody good - and I can relate to making the most of situations- I was flooded IN on a sheep station at Louth 2020 - got in a day before to miss the rush of traffic for the yearly race day!! .. well we couldn’t move off the river location due to possibly causing damage to the dirt/mud roads, ..I had my camper set up on the Darling River bank in almost constant rain - dug drains around it - chillaxed & cooked the best Bedourie camp oven pork roast n veg! loved every minute of it!

That's the 'diff' between someone that is prepared and someone that's not. You were ale to turn a bad situation around and still have some nice family time. Great information in that video too, so many basic things that some travelers never even think about. You certainly gave me some ideas ie carrying some extra emergency cash to help get out of sticky situations. Codeword DIFF. Your story put a smile on face!! I can't believe the timing of this video, I just experienced a very similar situation. On a recent trip ( 2 days ago) to the Vic High Country, l blew two tyers and one front diff in my Ranger..... bugger. A shit situation, but strangely a very positive one. My mates (thanks Rick & Peter)stuck by me, did whatever they could to help, and made sure l was safe. Ended up putting my car on a tow truck back to the nearest Ford Dealer. I was overwhelmed by people's support and help, from the RACV, Ovens Ford and the local motel, people couldn't do enough to help. I was genuinely touched and surprised. Like you l carry SHTF cash and have Total Care with the RACV and Ford Care, all these thing help so much. It's a shit having a major breakdown, but l had a great trip, meet so many wonderful people, and had so many positive experiences, l reckon l am in front. Glad you are safe and had a great family trip. Keep you the good work . Happy New Year.

You can afford to have a positive attitude to these things if you plan for them and have money and equipment to deal with them. The main reason people stress out about remote breakdowns is that they don't think about them until they happen.

Great video with awesome information. I work in a 000 center, not Telstra which you initially go through to, but one of the people you will talk to at a specific agency. Some clarification when using the Emergency + App, which EVERYONE should have, it does NOT automatically send your coordinates through, you just have to read out the coordinates which will present on your phone within the app. Love the sound the sound the DIFF made crawling out. Thinking the PLB may have to be on the list prior to undertaking some trips I hope to. :D

Imo a PLB is a must have even if you're not going to really remote areas. It only takes an injury or a snakebite, for example, and you may be in all sorts of trouble. Every year we hear about folks who get stranded and end up extinct which could have been easily avoided. What surprises me is that some of them seem to work or live in remote areas and still get caught out.

I’m with FRNSW and we don’t have it integrated into our current system ( new system coming) though all operators are trained on accessing and using What 3 Words to locate those who use it. I believe there are SOME agencies within Australia with What 3 Words integrated in their system already. The Emergency + App DOES HAVE What 3 Words integrated and will provide the words appropriate when opened.

My 1995 Troopy broke down in the middle, almost exactly the middle, of the Simpson Desert not that many years ago. All my hub studs snapped (due to bent rear diff) and front wheel drive towing a 750Kg camper trailer just wasn't working. On the hired satphone I contacted a mechanic friend in Melbourne who was going to drive all the way out there with a spare and fix it for me to drive out, but that didn't end up happening. At the time I had enough food and water for at least 5 weeks so I was happy as Larry sitting in the middle of the desert, I LOVE it out there. Didn't end up happening so Mt Dare recovered me at a cost of $2500 which RACQ paid me back afterward because I was on the Rig Road, the only gazetted road out there. I have had a similar thing happen to my awning as well, it wasn't pegged down well enough when cyclonic winds came through and wrapped it over the top of my camper trailer. A couple of hours later and using a spare tent pole it was all repaired again :) Now EVERY TIME when I pull up to camp I use my 500mm sand pegs to make sure that old buzzard will never fly again, ESPECIALLY in WA where the winds always waiting to spring up. So if you break down somewhere remote... sit back and relax and think on it before you let any panic set in, things have a way of getting sorted if you don't go all bull at a gate on it.
