Fuel is everywhere in WA. I’m the only DFES fire volunteer on the Dampier Peninsula and many bush fires have happened because of folks not doing their due diligence when camping. Some years have been worse than others. Excellent video.

"FUEL". Thanks for taking the time to outline a rather convoluted process to see if you can use your solid fuel stove in WA. I am a Firefighter and am constantly called out to investigate fires that turn out to be totally legal. Every Local Government has its own rules which change throughout the year and can also change suddenly based upon BoM's long range forecast. Before lighting any fires of any sort it is important to check the Local Government website. For example in Wanneroo you can burn backyard fires at certain times of year, but if you are across the road in Joondalup you can never burn for any reason.

‘Fuel.’ Totally agree Harry. One of the issues, where I live, is as you also said, the rules are not clear and in some cases I would say purposely vague. A total fire ban, here, means no fire however small except for two instances, one being that the fire is solely used for cooking. However, those two instances are not freely published, I only found out by phoning the government agency who regulates these rules. We can at time be treated like …mushrooms.

Lighting a contained fire should be taught in school as it was taught in the Cubs/Scouts. Education ! It's the same but different, like swimming pools and all the do's and don'ts. Teach the youngun's to swim is the first priority. Education !

Thanks for adding some clarity to the very misunderstood subject, I find it bizarre that the fire dangers aren't segmented even smaller than they are, for example Busselton is in the same region as Augusta for the Fire Danger Ratings on the WA Gov emergency website, the "Fuel" load and danger can be vastly different between those places.

Fire bans are quite difficult in WA it seems. On the West Coast of Canada a fire ban means NO fires that cannot be turned off with a switch. Gas barbecues, gas firepits, and the like are fine. Even a Biotite camp stove (that uses leaves and twigs as FUEL) and is smaller than a 2 litre bottle is prohibited. The firepits you show on stands wouldn't be allowed because you can't "turn them off".

In vic no flames in the open air on a total fire band but yes there are alot of different fire district's and its very rare for a state wide fire ban. Other wise in fire restrictions you can have a fire if the wind is under 10k you have a 3m clear area around the fire and have enough water to put the fire out you have to be with the fire at all times and need it for cooking or warmth

Likewise in NSW confusion reigns. People assume "bushfire danger period" (normally October to March) means no fires, whereas in fact a campfire is allowed at any time of the year other than during a declared total fire ban. There are some conditions but it's pretty clearly set out in the Rural Fires Act.

I live in the SW US. It's pretty much the same here. It's a pain sometimes, but, most of the time, you can find a camp where you can have fires. Same with private property as it is there. You can have a fire anytime.

In a perfect world the state government would unify all fire terminology and definitions across local and state government and have a minimum set of clear standards thats local government must adopt and have available on their website. Really love the Denmark shire webpage example you showed, can’t get much clearer than that. The emergency WA page is pretty good, it’s just the individual shire pages that confuse the matter. Now….. time to light up a solid FUEL bbq!

Was having this chat with a mate last week. Trying to explain the difference in FUELs. In Victoria the purpose of the fire is important, sometimes it is ok if you are using the fire for heat or cooking, but if you have a fire just because fire is pretty then it’s not allowed.

The issue with a FUEL barbecue, is that we have to use fire lighters or similar to start the charcoal or briquettes. That sometimes can appear to be at least a 15cm flame - obviously it dies down but there is always that nervous 5-10 minutes waiting for a Karen to get upset at the flames during a fire ban.

It is always an interesting discussion. This last summer Forestry NSW issued a Total Solid Fuel Fire Ban through out all state forests, it was removed in some areas in November 2023 but not all, some areas such as Pine Forests still have this ban even after huge amounts of rain. Total Fire Ban rules issued by the RFS or who ever can be confusing too as it seems you can not use a Gas BBQ more than a few meters from a permanent dwelling with constant water source but you can use butane cookers in the bush with no water near by. In Jan this year the RFS were called on someone camping near us as there was a total fire ban in place after a 38C day with strong winds and this guy decided to have a camp fire anyway. He was apparently unaware of the fire ban but in that situation I think common sense should kick in.

You also need to pay attention to the National Park restrictions if you're camping in one. At least in NSW, it's not uncommon for some National Parks (especially on the western side of the Great Dividing Range) to have Solid Fuel Bans from Oct/Nov to Mar/Apr, regardless of what the Fire Danger level is at. It seems that finding the information needed in NSW for if you can have a campfire seems to be a little easier, it's mostly on the NSW RFS website (And relevant National Park/State Forest pages), I haven't found anything for NSW local councils that is anything like what you showed for WA shires. And yes, people forget how big this country is. I've had people ask me why I'm buying firewood during a Total Fire Ban in NSW, but a 2-hour drive away where I'm going camping has a much lower fire rating and no Total Fire Ban.
