After 18 months I finally get back to the Tribute Build for my late Father of the Classic Airfix 1/600 HMS Warspite battleship kit. In this video I tackle the camo scheme and show you my easy method to achieve it. Plus I touch up a few problems from last time and fill the video with waffle and bad Dad jokes.

From what I gather, the camouflage on Warspite was a mirror image of the opposite side. Very fortunate. I did the Roma, which was completely different both sides. 30 minutes masking then 1 minute painting, rinse and repeat. Worth it in the end. Great video, Harry. Like most others watching, I built this about 50 years ago.

Ships are made of simple things all combined to make a complex object. You can’t just build it, then paint it. That’s what I like. You make each thing as a model in itself.. then combine for the full effect.

@@HarryHoudiniModels I agree. I'm slowly building the ex Matchbox Corvette to make RC. It's a series of boxes atop (the hull is a challenge with those plates). I like model railways for the same reason, in 7mm/1' each item is a model in itself - hope I live as long as Methuselah though!😲😀✌️💜🤔🙄

Hi Harry. Fantastic video as always mate, love how you make everything simple yet effective. It doesn't need to be complicated to work. The way you break the build down appeals to my way of modelling. A joy as always Harry, can't wait until the next one. Because I've been watching you and the diverse modelling subjects you show, I've managed to pick up the Airfix Vosper patrol boat as I loved your finding rare Airfix kits Video's. I think its one for the retirement stash! Anyhoo....... thanks for posting Harry, take care mate. Bobby

Going great guns there. You're among the few channels that I don't switch off when an airbrush comes out. I discovered something a while back that gives me a flawless finish when I'm brush painting. They call it Midwinter Medium (Midwinter Games was where I got the recipe from.) It's a mix of matt medium (I used Liquitex), water and Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver. Midwinter suggested Fairy Liquid, but, I found this made the paint tacky even when dry so I used the flow improver instead. I was initially going to bite the bullet and get a portable airbrush, but, this saved me from it. You can do what you like of course, but, I love what I can do with a brush. All too often people completely replace their brushes with them and their stuff looks like what it is, airbrushed. It doesn't look real. If you can use other means to get that realism back, it really enhances the models.

Use what ever you are comfortable with Roger. I didn’t airbrush for 50 years until a friend sent me one to try. Still happier with a hairy brush or even Posca paint pen for detailing, but the airbrush does give a nice smooth coat for big areas, now I have my mix and method worked out.

I Enjoyed the video Harry - I liked your technique where you used a brush to fill in those small parts of the camo, where masking would be too tricky - always learning something new. One question: How do you scale up a drawing from the instructions provided, so that you have a 1:1 plan which is accurate to print - so the camouflage can be measured accurately?
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 7 ай бұрын
I put the plans in Photoshop. Crop to the bow/stern edges, then scale that cropped image to the width of my model, 321mm for a Warspite in 1/600 scale. Then print the result at that exact size and bingo bongo; to-scale plans I can work from. My other method is find a thing on the plan which I know the size of. Work out a scaling ratio between the plan dimension and the scale size I need. Use that scaling ratio on the overall size of the plan. That should also result in a to-scale drawing I can print.
