I built this kit in about 1970 as a nipper. All those coloured triangles - oh my God what a mess I made of painting them! StillI was proud of my creation. I haven't seen one of these kits since then, so this video brought back fond and distant memories

I used to keep my kits in a walk in cupboard under the stairs, it was cool and dark and my parents bought me kits every week but put them away until they thought I was capable of building them. As I got my initial Hornby Railway system when I was 10 months old. I was more into train sets than kits so by the time I started building models I had hundreds to build up.

Lovely to see that. I might be rather odd, here, but I do get an odd shivery sort of feeling, when opening an old kit, from any manufacturer, especially if it's one (a) I've never owned, or (b) one I have had, but once only, when I was a kid. I recently made a Matchbox 1/72 Spitfire IX. Few parts, brown and green plastic. And I was shaking, as I opened the box. The memories, very happy ones, of making the same kit, at my now long-dead Gran's dining table, some 53 years before, were almost too much, and I had to walk away from it for a day or two. Nostalgia is good - but it can be terrifyingly cloying, too. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this lovely item. Nice one. 👍👍👍

Good review Harry. Remember building this kit around 1980 and like yours and with a lit of these kits Joining the Hull halves and deck could be a bit fiddly. Also I can't ever remember a kit bk then not having those moulded deadeyes broken or missing from the sprues as well as the bottom half of the channels these were always first to break due to being very small thin and flimsy. Just for the record the swivel guns were called "Falconets" bk in the day. Thoroughly enjoyed the review bringing bk some great memories 👌 Rob.T. 🏴

Hi Harry. A very fair review. On the one I'm building, it had a lot of ejector pin marks on the inside hull halves. Several were above the main deck level. So I had to fill them. No problem, but it highlights the lack of detail on the bulwarks. So thats my next step.
@HarryHoudiniModels Жыл бұрын
I had the same problem on the St Louis.. sanded them out then scored planking and added wood effects to the bulwarks. Looked great in the end.

Looks a good kit and nice to see it’s aged really well, I learnt a lot from the Airfix instructions, like aircraft wings are on the outside, do miss those and something they should do more of especially on the easier kits for kids. I like the flash on Airfix Kits as it means I get more plastic than I payed for :), take care and model on

There were some pretty nice kits around in the 60's. I have an original long box Aurora Black Knight. The plastic is a little thick by today's standards, but, the detail on it is really nice including the head. I may build it one day. I do keep seeing reissues of the Airfix ships, a comparison between new and old could make an interesting video. Have they stood the test of time......
@HarryHoudiniModels Жыл бұрын
I have made some comparison videos, like the 70’s Airfix Schnellboot to the 21st century Revel and Fore kits. The results were surprising. Same with my Airfix Spitfire from the 90’s compared to the latest moulding. Most of the Airfix ship kits from the 60’s are not produced anymore, except for the Victory, which has been thrashed out over half a century and now the mouldings are flash city. This has given Airfix ships a bad reputation. I do have an old white box Wasa kit and the new red box. That might work?
@rogerbowen5753 Жыл бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels I saw the Schnellboot one and I'll look up the Spitfire one. I have seen the Airfix Cutty Sark rereleased. Yeah, the Wasa might be worth a comparison.

There are 2 rear facing guns right there where you said no rear facing guns.😊 the line battle formation only started 80 years later in the Anglo Dutch wars . Individual ship fights, with raking shots of fore and rear castle guns were very much the standard practice then.

14:49 - 'no rear facing guns' says he with his thumbs beside two gun ports. Fair enough they might have been fake gunports. Great review. If only kit instructions were still like that. I bought an old Airfix B25 Mitchell recently for a few quid, just to get the old instructions.
