Vipera evanesca is actually just evanesco (making things vanish) but with an adjective, it's not a spell on its ownbut a variant of a rather useful spell, it's just in order to get a more precise result. Just like protego totalum is a variant of protego and not a spell on its own.

@@shadowing_songnot really the thing is most of the spells in Harry Potter are just latin or formed from a latin word. Evanesco would just translate to dissapear/vanish. The wizards are pointing their wands at things and say „dissapear“, vipera evanesca roughly translates to „snake, dissapear“ so it isn’t a spell on its own but rather a variant. JKR didn’t make the rules clear, sometimes they specify and sometimes they just use the base spell and nothing changes. The latin is really broken tho

1) a lot of spells are combos of words, so knowing the word for snake and vanish allows you to improvise, 2) serpentsortia is likely a simple conjuring spell as it's done by a second year, 3) flagrate, as others have pointed out, had multiple uses. So, this is a pointless discussion.

Flagrate i could see being used by someone who's unable to speak, and has no stationary of any kind nearby. Say someone got an injury that renders them mute, either temporarily or permanently. That spell would certainly be faster and more efficient than carrying around parchment/paper and a quill/pen.

I believe Vipera evanesco is not a spell intended to vanish snakes, but rather the specific coubter-spell to Serpentsortia, probably one one Snape's original creations. The strange thing here is a second year student perfectly mastering a spell that involves conjuring a full blown living being out of thin air at his first attempt. So maybe it's not his first attempt after all. It would totally be like the Malfoys to secretly train their son at magic at home against the Ministry rules, to fuel their ideology that pure-bloods are superior to half-bloods and muggle-borns.

Especially when you figure that human transfiguration is a thing - ferret Malfoy was funny in the moment, but think of the implications if you could just change someone into a different animal or plant anytime... If nothing else, how long would you give it until cannibalism happened by accident?

The first can be useful. You summon the snake, then make it larger with "Engorgio". If you're a parseltongue I think this would create quite a big danger for your opponent, the evanescence spell you simply block with protego.

I think Flagrate could be useful. It might be most useful as a whiteboard substitute for teachers, but still useful. A truly useless spell is the unlock one, since it unlocks muggle locks, and 11 year olds can do it. Why even have it? It is just a door handle at that point.
