Interesting. Guess we can "what if" many ideas. Personally, if the Dumbleydore was head of the ministry, we might've received a fabulous 7 book series.

I think that the biggest change would've been that, since Dumbledore wasn't looking for a Divination professor, than he never would've heard the prophecy, let alone Snape overhearing part of it and Voldemort being obsessed with the prophecy, never would've tried to kill Harry specifically, and would've concentrated on taking over even more. Without the distraction of the prophecy, the wizard civil war would've started much earlier and, I believe due to Voldemort's horcruxes, he would've eventually won.

What better way to guide and influence the future than by being a teacher and headmaster? As head of the Ministry of MAGIC he would have influence for a limited amount of time if at all--As headmaster he is able to influence generations of people.
@jonmedina259 Жыл бұрын
As minister he might have used something other than the dementors to guard Azkaban, as well as improved Wizarding relations between creates like giants, and werewolves. This would have deprived Voldemort of some of his most powerful death-eaters and allies. He might have even foiled Scaberz from bringing back the dark lord if it was him visiting Azkaban during that visit when Fudge gave Padfoot the newspaper. Maybe he could have saw the truth using his igilimens skill.

Or not, since he was well aware, that power corrupts him, which is why he refused to become minister. In his own words, people best suited for positions of power are ones, that never pursued them. So we can't know for sure, if he would remain as wise minister, as he was headmaster.

Albus Dumbledore was such a complex man. He had a kindness to him, but I have also noticed how many highly smart people, like Albus was; tend to see through people, read them like books and that power make smart people tempted to manipulate others (whom they think are less intelligent). So Albus wasn't probably aware of his darker traits until he met with Gellert and both dug deep in the use of their power to their advantage, masked with the (false) premise of "the greater good". Phrase probably picked by Dumbledore to make sure his true intentions of power and domination, were ambigious, arbitrary. I think the death of Ariana (possibly and unintentionally, by his own wand) once more made Albus aware of the faults in his character, and he saw the consequences of actions of people seeking power, once met with opposition, can be catastrophic (the death of his sister). Albus lost so much in his life, and when when one is met with so much loss, it can be very humbling. Albus lost his dad, then his dreams of traveling the world with Elfias, then his mom, then his sister the his only love Gellert. These events were probably the reason why Albus was immensely wise, and that wisdom made him keep his ego on check.
@leohillmann671710 күн бұрын
I think the loss of his sister was the biggest humbling moment Arianna was his fault entirely. Both what broke her and then her death. Albus was too busy being clever and plotting wizard supremacy with Gellert while he left his sister unsupervised. Then he fought with Gellert and the battle killed her. Aberforth was rightly so angry with his brother. Arianna was the best one of the family.

It’s possible that he would’ve been the greatest minister of magic of the British wizarding community, but there was also a possibility that he would’ve been corrupted by power and became a tyrant. Dumbledore even admitted that he had a brief moment of weakness and relapsed back into his old ways when he tried to get the resurrection stone out of Marvolo Gaunt’s ring but ended up getting cursed and would’ve killed him if Snape hadn’t killed been the one to kill him.

I’d like to see a 7 part fan fiction of this. Where Dumbledore assumes power, starts off with all the best intentions, defeats Voldemort and becomes a tyrant. Explore how this effects Snape - did he follow Dumbledore to the ministry or stay and become the headmaster? How does the effect Hagrid- does he still work at hogwarts or did he become the deatheater we all feared he was? Sirius- does he rot in Azkaban? Lupin - can he find real work? 5 books dedicated to hunting and defending Voldemort, watch Dumbledore become more ruthless in his quest. Then 2 books explore the aftermath where everyone is unsure at first then realizes Dumbledore must be stopped. Julis Caesar never gave up his power. I’m thinking this could be along similar story beats. Collaborate with the SuperCarlin Brothers on this one!

The worst of tyrannies are always the ones that are done in the victim's "best interests". Dumpledore strikes me as one who has learned this truth, and much as Gandolf rejected the One Ring when Frodo offered (begged) it to him, Dumpledore rejected being placed in positions of power over the magical community.

I think Dumbledore didn't want to be a Minister because he liked to be undercover, and as a Minister he wouldn't be able to do that. He would also be subjected to much more criticism. He was the head of the Wizengamot and the International Confederation of Warlocks, which gave him much more power than if he were a minister. Additionally, as Headmaster, he had a more direct influence on the upbringing of new generations of wizards than as Minister.
@cassiemontgomery45 Жыл бұрын
This is what I think too. Dumbledore was always very secretive as well, for good reasons, I'll add. As Minister for Magic, he'd be out front and center, and press attention could mess up some of his plans.

I trust Dumbledores knowledge of himself and his abilities as a seer. He is just too powerful a wizard and since he has a status as a hero for defeating Grindelwald, he could easily become a tyrant. Albus Dumbledore forgot the truth about power. That temporary as power may be, you can never truly understand it without applying it. I believe Lord Acton’s famous quote,”Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, is incorrect. I don’t think that power in and of itself is the corrupting influence. Instead it should have been,”Power tends to be attractive to the corruptible.” This describes Dumbledore very accurately.
@ceu16019311 ай бұрын
Unfortunately you are wrong - power IS corrupting influence. When you hold power in your hands, temptation to misuse it is hard to resist even for most purehearted people. And more power you hold, stronger said temptation becomes, until you eventually give in, from which point it's slippery slope towards further abuse of said power.

So obviously the book gives the explanation as to why he never became Minister. As for the "What if he did" part, he for sure would have made things better. The problem is, he didn't have the time. We already know that Fudge sent daily owls to get advice from him, not sure if he answered that advice all the time though. But he spent most of his time figuring out Voldemort still. Just going by the books when Harry gets into the picture, Dumbledore spends most of his time watching Harry, helping him grow and then finding out how Voldemort is doing what he's doing. Doesn't leave him much time to sit around at the Ministry and trying to run the British section of the wizarding world. The idea that he didn't trust himself with that power is kinda dumb. He obviously kept learning magic throughout his life so he didn't avoid THAT kind of power, and he became Headmaster, so he didn't avoid the power of being in charge of hundreds of students learning magic.
@hollyhartwick3832 Жыл бұрын
Dumbledor's statement about those best suited to power directly echoes similar statements made by Socrates in The Republic by Plato. In it, Socrates says that leadership or rule is best wielded by those who don't desire it but are willing to take it up when it's needed, but also set it aside when it's no longer required. This goes hand in hand with other notable quotes like "those who possess power fear to lose it", " power corrupts: absolute power corrupts absolutely", "[the] arrogant individual, whose power of authority and fear of losing it has gone to his head, has difficulty remembering he was once a man" and "Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it."

It depends on when he'd become minister. I think if he had become Minister after his defeat of Grindelwald then he could have prevented Voldemort from gaining a large following due to him improving relations with the giants, trolls, goblins, house elves and the others. Besides the Auror office would be much better organised and they'd be trained by Albus himself. Plus he'd fire Umbitch due to her being the worst person alive.

I think the real issue is that Dumbledore's past would constantly catch up with him as minister. There would be never ending drama and plots against his position. As long as he held headmaster of Hogwarts, very few really cared. But if he was such a very much public person as minister, Rita Skeeter would have Christmas come early every day he was in office. Also, contrary to what you say about helping the order of the phoenix and harry more. His position at Hogwarts was exactly the position he needed to be in to help Harry the most. And also have the ability to sneak out to do order of the phoenix stuff. As well as personally hunt down Voldemort's horcruxes. As minister he would be constantly haggled to deal with ministry business instead of being able to do those other things. It would stretch, even someone like Dumbledore, too thin. I think the best minister at the time would actually be Minerva McGonagall.
@littlefoot5013 Жыл бұрын
Though him not being at Hogwarts would change things, Dumbledore as Minister would have been able to change some other things: 1.) I doubt he would have arrested Hagrid in Harry's Second Year. That means that likely Harry would have gone to Hagrid himself to ask about what the diary told, rather than Aragog, and since it was Aragog himself who had told Harry that the girl who died was in a bathroom, leading to Harry figuring out that Myrtle was the one killed and the entrance to the chamber was there, which then prompted him to go to Hermoine, after being caught by McGonnagal, where he then learned about the Basilisk, anyway, Hagrid may not have mentioned that the girl died in a bathroom, and so Harry might not have made those connections. (However, knowing Horcrux Riddle, he'd have arranged for some way to get Harry to himself, though he may have just waited till after he'd have drained the life force from Ginny in this timeline.) 2.) Dumbledore would have believed Harry and Hermoine about Sirius being innocent and Pettigrew being the guilty one. As such, Sirius could well have been cleared (though it's not a certainty that the Minister alone could have convinced the public or the bureaucracy that a wizard believed to be dead for 12 years was the real culprit.), but if they had, it's possible they could have intercepted Peter Pettigrew and hindered or even stopped Voldemort from rising to power.

His experiences with Gellert taught him he was not to be trusted with power. But he did fail in a way, as Headmaster he was influencing young minds for many years. He was the Chief Warlock who chaired the Wizengamot and was in charge of trials. Thirdly he was eventually the Supreme Mugwamp sometime before July 1991 representing the UK Wixen society in the ICW. A position he lost in 1995 after Riddle's return. So yes he did have power just not Minister power.

This looks like a great plot idea for a fan fiction story... Dumbledore sends the time turner away to a place where even he can not find it... and upon his corruption, it finds its way to the most powerful witch of the new age with instructions on how to turn him away from power, and back to the headmaster position. A sort of alternate timeline prequel sort of thing.

Like Snape getting DADA position much earlier and because of the cursed DADA position he would have been out from Hogwarts sooner and that would have made Harry prone to attacks and would not have survived without snapes help. . . And Even in goblet of fire if it was not Dumbledore no one would have believed Harry and Without him being there he couldn't have done most of the things he did.. Also.. He has seen the rise of bad wizards throughout his life and hasdedicated his life to educating children ontp the right path. Although there is right and wrong in the Ministry of magic the lines can be blurred by politics. It's not something I think Dumbledore would like or enjoy.

Harry admired Dumbledore ever since he met him. Dumbledore told Harry he was the one to weild the deathly hallows. But Harry didn't want power. Thats why he put the elder wand back in Dumbledores grave. He saw Dumbledore as the most powerful wizard, that was, or would ever be. Harry defeated Voldemort, and went on to be an auror. And Head of Department of Magical Law Enforcement. People probably saw Harry as the most powerful wizard since then, but we dont know. Harry wanted to keep people safe. And in the epilogue of the deathly hallows, the wizarding world and muggle world was safe and peaceful.

Also Dumbledore wouldn't have become the sort of man he feared "ambition for power" can create in a man. And likewise, as he, himself, stated---he turned it down because he felt he didn't deserve the position----that, in itself would be key in motivating him to prove for himself (and to the greater wizarding world) that "those suited for power are those who have leadership THRUST upon them, and take it up because they MUST." As you mention, dumbledore no longer CRAVED power---and his more-mature understanding of the RESPONSIBILITIES to not be consumed with self-importance or abuse of power meant he would have made a good minister. Say it is how it would have been if he reluctantly agreed...say...in book 4, after the ministers' death, if he, knowing voldemort's return decided to accept the position this time IF ONLY until voldemort's eventual and inevitable defeat. I think he would have insisted he REMAIN AT hogwarts as headmaster (else making mcgonnagal interim headmaster), and state...PUBLICALLY, voldemorts return was the ONLY reason he was adding the responsibilities of minster to his role as headmaster... that, once voldemort was dealt with, he would be requesting an early election campaign and would be stepping down....to live out the rest of his working days solely as headmaster---where he truly felt he could do the most good....and where he truly felt his life's purpose resided. ....i think that would have worked..... But it wouldn't have made for a good storytelling. The opposition (and foolishness) of the ministers of magic meant books 5 and 6 (and 7) all had aspects of conflict that would have been incapable of writing in if Dumbledore had taken that job after Barty Crouch's death.

In reality, he was power hungry, manipulative, played people off against each other, and I think in a lot of ways downright cruel. And he disguised a lot of his cruelty as benevolence and as hiding behind the excuse of "ancient magic". He had no problem exploiting children or allowing them to be severely abused and neglected… All for the "greater good". No, I don't think Dumbledore ever reformed himself. @HarryPotterTheory do you think Dumbledore would have taken Harry as his adopted son if he was the Minister of Magic?

Dumbledore IMHO was surely a great and powerful wizard, but as a Headmaster he was a total failure for a great number of reasons. Firstly, more than a half of teachers he hired were either incompetent (Snape included, as he was a great potioneer but a horrible teacher; a ghost teaching what should have been one of the most important subjects? That'll do! Hagrid? We all love Hagrid! But as a teacher? God no) Secondly, he has never really addressed the pureblood ideology, even though he had the best position to do so and capable of understanding and reaching Slytherins and knowing perfectly well where it would lead the students. Another reason is not addressing the flaws in the school sistem. Helping muggle-borns to adjust to an entirely new world? Just give them a book! You think you sort too soon and have an opportuinity to change it so that students will get to know each other better? Ah, nevermind, it's OK as it is. Last but not least, he's totally irresponsible! For most of Harry's 5th year he just was... somewhere. Sure, Uncle Voldy and you trust McGonagall, but are you the Headmaster or who? Leave the school to Umbridge? Great idea and we all know how it all worked out. Badly. Overall, just an extremely selfish and maniputative person who could easily be corrupted by power and never really given up on the superiority view of his teens. So, a bad Headmaster and would definitely be a disaster as a MfM, IMHO

Wow! Now you're talking my language. You have just named up so many of the problems I have with Dumbledore. Another problem I have with him as well is his treatment of Harry from go to whoa. Right from the get go, first of all, you don't dump a baby on a doorstep and expect that the people who you have dumped the baby on a going to be okay with it or going to take the baby in. You don't just dump a baby like you would dump an animal on an animal shelter. No, you do the civilised thing and you go and knock on the door and speak to the family and treat them like civilised human beings, giving them the opportunity to refuse to take Harry if necessary, and having backup plans in case that happens. And even if some sort of "ancient magic in "is necessary to protect Harry, you take steps to do your best to ensure that his relations are not going to abuse him. Dumbledore would have known what sort of abuse and neglect Harry was suffering because he would have had the reports from Arabella Figg. But he allowed Harry to be abused for 10 years, and then to add insult to injury, sent Harry back to that abusive situation every summer. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. His exploitation of Harry as "the boy who lived"… I have a hard time believing that Harry was the only person capable of love. I have a hard time believing that Harry was supposed to be this wonderful special kid who was the only chance of defeating Voldemort. And even if he was, he should have been raised normally and given a choice… Not groomed into the situation as Dumbledore did. Even when Harry sees Dumbledore in the afterlife… Whatever it was… Dumbledore still manipulates Harry into thinking that Dumbledore was never to blame or was never at fault for anything that went wrong. I'm glad you mentioned problems at Hogwarts as well as I can see so many… Not just with the muggle born… But with pastoral care generally. Or I should say more accurately… Lack there of. Dumbledore never addressed pastoral care issues, and I think that some of his staff would have been well-meaning and would have tried their best regarding pastoral care with students, but they were so overworked and over burdened that their efforts would have been most likely futile. I'm sorry, that buck stops with Dumbledore, not with his stuff. Not to mention that, if any of his staff had of said something regarding pastoral care, Dumbledore no doubt would not have listened. I noticed reading the books that Dumbledore never listens to counsel given to him by others, he made up his mind and he just did. But he always gave people the impression he was the wise old man that knew what he was doing when I personally think that's debatable. Then there is Dumbledore's habit of turning a blind eye towards bullying. He even allowed Snape to outrightly bully his students with impunity. Dumbledore was an absolutely terrible headmaster and I have only just scratched the tip of the iceberg with my issues with him. I write a lot of fanfiction about various staff members of Hogwarts and their issues with Dumbledore and it's a lot of fun. But if Dumbledore was this bad headmaster… Then thank God he was never Minister for magic or all hell really would have broken loose.

@@milanka882 yeah! The more I think about it, the more I dislike him. I have the same thoughts about the way he treaqted Harry, just didn't add as it's kind of between the two of them. Gosh, really, he could have simply written to Petunia a note "I know everything" and that's it! But no, let the boy be abused for 10 years, knowing full well what's going on and then treat the family in his childish passive-aggressive way. And let's not even start as to why he waited untill 1945 to face Grindelwald.

@@EltaninMalfoy Childish. I'd never thought of describing Dumbledore in that way. But when I think about it, you are right... he is childish. It's as though he's still that adolescent boy hanging around with Grindelwald, but as he's gotten older, he's much, much better at masking his childish, passive-aggressive tendencies. When he doesn't get hid own way, he gets angry and throws his weight around, but he does it in a way that looks mature, wise, competent and in charge. Very manipulative. And I hate the way he runs Hogwarts. A lot of people point this out, but they only point to the harm he does to the students. In reality, he creates a highly toxic working environment for his faculty as well. McGonigall is a yes woman to him, and you'd think she'd know better or at least be a wake-up to him. But he's not... she's just his poodle. And as for Snape... I understand Snape had a tough start that probably explains the way he is. But did Dumbledore ever reach out a hand to a troubled young man to offer him guidance? No. And when Snape came over to the "good side"... whatever that means... Dumbledore had ample opportunities to reach out to Snape and help him. He could have given Snape some other post that didn't involve teaching... especially once it became clear what sort of "teacher" Snape was. But nope, Dumbledore just used Snape the same he used everyone else. Snape was just a pawn on Dumbledore's chess board, and it didn't matter what sort of carnage or psychological damage he did to students in the meantime.

@@EltaninMalfoy Then there's Flitwick ans Sprout. Flitwick is actually my fave teacher. I think he is a character with so much squandered opportunity to explore so many nuances in the story... particularly in later books that were supposedly written for an older audience. But still... I like writing about Flitwick and exploring the issues with Dumbledore and how he runs... or doesn't run... the school... particularly the glaring lack of pastoral care at the school that Dumbledore never addresses. There is an interesting scene involving Flitwick in the 7th book in which McGonigall and Sprout are talking, and Filius is asked to bring "his Ravinclaws"... because he probably actually takes pastoral care seriously... at least within Ravinclaw house and with the limited both personal and professional resources available to him...down to the Great Hall for evacuation from the school in preparation for the battle. Filius expresses some... in my opinion... rational and logical doubts about Minirva's preparations, and the girls shoot him down, exchanging a look between them of "grim understand". But it's not exactly explained what the girls understood about Filius. I can't help wondering if Filius saw things in the situation, Hogwarts, Dumbledore, and the wizarding establishment more generally for what they were... dysfunctional... and perhaps didn't have the same faith in these things as the girls. Maybe Filius wasn't invested in Dumbledore's "grand legacy" as everyone else. Perhaps he was a bit too much of a "wild card" for Mcgonigall or Sprout to stomach, and they didn't fully trust him. He wasn't Voldimort's man by a long shot. Maybe he just didn't take a side, and only cared about defending his loved ones and those were defenseless... against both side. When you start to see Dumbledore for what he really is, the possibilities for the imagination are endless.

@@EltaninMalfoy "And let's not even start as to why he waited untill 1945 to face Grindelwald." Yeah, I think there was a reason for that. I think Dumbledore was a drama king. And I think he did everything and timed his actions and everything for maximum theatrical effect. Basically he waited to defeat Grindelwald until it would have the maximum impact and therefore draw "favorable" attention to himself. Dumbledore was an incredibly selfish person who knew how to mask it and appear selfless and benevolent. I would honestly say that the clean-up and reparations of wizarding society from Dumbledore will be ten times harder than from Voldemort. That's just my hunch. I think Dumbledore did a lot more damage to wizarding society, and the damage was a lot more sinister and will be a lot harder to diagnose and correct.

So dumbledore was a coward and a fool because he let a position of great responsibility and authority go to somebody who didn't deserve it and would likely abuse it. You paint it like it's some noble sacrifice but it's just selfish and cowardly. If those who would best lead refuse than those who ought not lead are given free reign.
