The nice thing about Jay Leno's Garage is having the owners of the cars that give their experiences with them
@flourishforever5 жыл бұрын
The problem with Jay Leno is that he does not know much about cars. Most comments are sheer superlatives, a typical American trend to find that unique fact or statistic for everything. Harry, on the other hand, characterizes his cars, he can compare year models, he notices design patterns of the times, he does his homework out of passion. He is also willing to get his hands dirty fixing or cleaning his own cars. Harry has a way of appropriating his vehicles where Jay remains at the sideline, a pure spectator, a child with cash incapable of an appreciation that only true immersion confers..
@EbrahimSaadawii5 жыл бұрын
@@flourishforever WTH? Jay Leno once started talking about cars at a concours and he went for 3 hours sorting out every important car ever made from the 1890s to the current day with mindblowing knowledge and information on every single one, right out of the top of his head. I used one as an everyday car for 12 years, did 112,000 miles in it, most reliable high performance car that I have ever owned bar my 308 GTS QV which I did 128,000 trouble free miles in. I can tell you that the 550 definitely never made 200 mph though, I tried many times in German adventures, at 200Mph my sat nav always recorded 180 mph. Only real weakness was the brakes, never up to the job in my opinion and the ABS used to come on in the dry from high speed braking which was a scary event. I think it was always incorrectly set up. Other than that, a really tough and ultra reliable car with a very surprising amount of luggage capacity because it had a second boot under the floor of the main boot for a full size spare wheel and room for two suitcases on the parcel shelf. I even put one of those collapsable telescopic 10 foot ladders on the rear parcel shelf once!

True, but the car was designed for the F1 gearbox and I have heard from a credible source that the 599 and also the 612 were horrible to drive with a manual gearbox.
@spiller2127 жыл бұрын
My source is a Ferrari dealer. He told me, the later cars (575 and even more so the 599 and 612) were designed around and for the F1 gearbox, the ECU and the whole set up where not programmed for a manual gearbox, hence the F1 suits the cars much better. Apparently the 550 was the last "real" manual gearbox Ferrari...
@Lemma017 жыл бұрын
I can remember problems with the speedo - in the UK you could only legally use a tiny segment - by the time the needle was horizontal you were ten miles over the motorway limit... You literally had no idea what speed you were going, ever. Also the fuel gauge was about the size of a two-pound coin, took 110 litres (ouch to fill up...), and had three positions - full (140 miles) half empty (for 40 miles) then empty. None of these positions were in any way accurate. Apart from that, brilliant. Thanks as always, Harry, for the memories. ;-)

This was the 1st Ferrari I ever test drove, the 550 back in 2007. I drove it like a grandma, regret not letting the reigns out a little. Test drove a 360 back to back with the 550 and the 360 blew me away, much more of what I thought a Ferrari experience should be, couldn't stop smiling on that test drive. I put a deposit on the 360. Shortly after, test drove brand new 505 HP Corvette Z06. Got my deposit back on the Ferrari and bought the Z06. I won't make that mistake again. The love faded fast for the Corvette. Going light-speed on freeway on-ramps gets old after a while, much more to the driving experience than just speed. Now I'm shopping for a 550. Always thought this was the most beautiful modern Ferrari, reminiscent of the '64 250 GTO. It's aged beautifully, looks fantastic, elegant from the front, very aggressive from the back unlike all the 12 cylinders that Ferrari has made since, modern designs have been bad in my opinion. The 599, F12 and the Super Fast all have design problems in my opinion. The F12 looks like it's wearing a diaper from the back with the weird center lines coming down from the trunk, looks like a sumo wrestler or something.

Thanks for kind comments, I should do more bike vids, just working out how to do them. Weather being horrible in UK this summer, so not done as many vids as I was planning to recently

Its crazy how valuable these are, but a v12 Mercedes of the era, is worth $3000

04dram04 yeah my friend just got a '96 S600 V12 at auction for $3000 Canadian, absolutely ridiculous, probably because it's an old luxury car before a classic performance car
@dlwst447 жыл бұрын
04dram04 thats because the oil coolers leak and cost several thousand to repair, also the coil packs are about $1000 each. The suspensions cost $10,000 to replace, its a maintenance nightmare when they get old.

V8 It's because they are luxury cars so it's muffled up to be quiet. The 6.0L V12 is the same one used in the first Zonda so it's possible to make the luxo-barge S600 sound like it with a new exhaust system.

You really offer an extra level of insight on top of the usual (best on YT) level here, Harry. Very nice. Since everybody else in the comments seem to post wishes I figure I should as well. It would be magical to hear you talk us through the 288 GTO - easily the best proportioned car Maranello has produced (and a video of that would be much more special than a F40 one). I realize it's not a particularly common car (lol), but since we're throwing wishes around...

such a great looking, elegant car.

Wow... Watching this 550 take on turns has to the best thing. I would edit a few more rounds of curvy roads. When you compare to current Ferrari’s, the 550 reminds me of an Italian Mafia boss dressed in English tailoring. Soft and elegant looks, but don’t get him mad. I would confidently say this is truly one of the most timeless designs from Ferrari of modern times. Just Perfect.

Pointless factoid No. 1000076b; the exact same Momo airbag steering wheel was fitted to the Honda Integra Type R.

So what. It's a great steering wheel. The difference was that this was clad in proper Italian leather. Speedline also made wheels for lesser brands. So what?

Thank You for this wonderful real world review. I just tripped over this video couldn't believe my eyes. Aways thought the 550 is the most beautiful Ferrari. Even better than the P330. Thanks Again.

Pretty good, but I have got to disagree with you about when Luca di Montezimolo arived on the scene. He was Enzo's right hand man at the age of 26 in about 1973. He subsequently ran the whole Ferrari outfit including the F1 side extremely well for decades until the thuggish, not very intelligent head of parent company Fiat Auto, Sergio Marcchione decided that Ferrari exclusivity & desirability (Which has everything to do with used car prices, hence desirability when new) were very secondary considerations to short term profit, & production should increase by 40%. di Montezimolo didn't agree, so di Montezimolo was booted out With a 26 million Euro fu** off gift. A bit too early to accurately assess the long-term effects & implications of this move, but I doubt if it will enhance Ferrari's reputation in the long term.
@r7coo7 жыл бұрын
Frank Cree - you are both in fact correct but Harry was of course referring to LdM's return to Ferrari after doing other jobs in the Fiat empire & The Americas cup & Italia 90 etc

Just heard about this channel because of James's 550 video. ( JayEmm on Cars ) Glad i checked it out. Really nice to have another, non clickbait or shouty car channel to watch. :)

I'm sure the fog lights on the 550 cost more than my 2017 V6 Honda Accord Coupe. Beautiful car, nonetheless.

And I bet in the real world your Honda is faster, more comfortable and more enjoyable to drive than the Ferrari. Supercars are cartoon cars.

The truly classy, graceful lines from Ferrari's beginning in the late 1940's through the early/mid-90's were the most attractive years, in my opinion. The onset of 4-wheeled video games with exaggerated sculptures and electric hybrids are just a different vehicle and, to me, are a totally different class of machine. Many like them but the appeal just doesn't reach me like the earlier era... and not just with the Ferrari, but many of the other cars of those same periods. Harry's style and this fine older Ferrari fit together like "hand-in-glove." I happened to be in San Francisco traffic for a couple of miles down 19th Avenue one sunny afternoon, along side one of these when they were brand new. I thought then that it was one of the classiest cars I'd ever seen and my opinion hasn't diminished the slightest bit since then. It is one of Ferrari's finest ever. It's too bad that Enzo didn't live long enough to have seen it. I think he would have approved very much!

Awesome video. It's cool hearing you talk about the car and how knowledgeable you are about it. It's neat to see a real world review on a car like this. It was definitely ahead of it's time in terms of performance and styling. It's a very beautiful car and still holds up well today.
