Or you can get the 575 Maranello, which possesses some of the suspension features missing in the earlier 550, plus other improvements. I think you can recognize by sight the 550 vs. the 575 typically with the rims--the 575 rims have a bit more detail.

I got to drive one. In college I worked at a kart track and one of the regulars had one. He bet me I couldn't beat his lap time, and driving his 550M was the stakes. I won, and he let me drive the piss out of it. Amazing experience.

too true, also 550/575m Maranello was probably the closest thing to an 'attainable' Ferrari one would want to own for their entire life. Had the looks, the sound, the gated shifter.... and the timeless appeal. Back in the late 2000s they were actually pretty in reach of upper middle class money on the used market. Though reliability and servicing was a big oof, it was still lot more 'attainable' than any mid engined italian sports car too.

Sport button makes sense because when you press it, the suspension become firmer for better handling. These Ferrari were to be fast confortable and safe cruisers with airbags, ASR, ABS . Sport and NO ASR buttons were here to change the driving experience to a more sporty one when you needed it and not by default!

for the immobilizer, the Renaults from the 1990s had it, with the infrared key, you had to start within 10 minutes after unlocking the doors (I have a Renault Twingo from 1998 with this option, this car was stolen a lot in France without this ! )

Actually, to cancel the immobilizer light no, need to pull off the key from its fob before pressing the button of the remote control. The stop button avoid the climate control to start even if the "auto" mode is selected. It means no cool no heat by pressing this. This feature exists in many other cars in order to be absolutely sure the the A/C compressor won't kick in for nothing. But stopping warmer air as well is definitely very odd...

This has always been my favorite looking Ferrari from the era. It was peak 90s design. Sleek, swoopy and lots of interesting features like the vents. It was big enough to let it all the design elements breath and it kept the trademark quad taillights and exhaust. Rare too. Only seen one on the street.

My Saab 900 from 1997 had the same immobilizer setup. Basically if you dont start the car in 30 or so seconds you have to lock and unlock it again. If you break in the car and try to hot wire it it wont start, since its immobilized

The stop button on the 550 and 360 when lit stops all A/C and heating and it will just blow air which is nice to get rid of fuel smells in the cabin when stationary. If it doesn't do this when activated, the button (or the circuits that it should activate) are broken. Getting the heating to work on this car is finicky. It's very probable to see it with a working A/C but with no heating. Other than that it's a gorgeous car which was also available in a GT1 version (aka the GTO even though it's not recognised as such by Ferrari)

I saw one of these when I was on a scuba diving trip from Atlanta to west palm beach in 2002. These look way better in person than in pictures (even thought they look good in pictures) the good scoop is soo big. I’ve wanted one over since, and have been looking for years. Had a model of the 550M and some hot wheels of them as a kid. Between that and the F40 they will always be the most beautiful and best Ferraris ever made imo. Also the old Ferrari horn sound is the best. I wish they would bring it back
