@Leroy Brown The car belonged to a UK businessman that lived abroad in Asia. He used to fly into the UK regularly and insisted the car was made available for him at the airport. He didn’t want to use chauffeurs or taxis as he liked to drive himself. My dad worked for the company that stored it for him and he used to drop it off at the airport and collect it again when the guy flew home. On this occasion the owner was flying into Rome on business and asked for the car to be made available there. My dad asked me if I wanted to go with him and share the driving and needless to say I said yes, and then of course seized the opportunity and did all of the driving! We flew home after dropping it off at the airport and my dad went back to Rome just four days later to bring it back to the UK again. Great memories of the car, the trip and my dad. He’s 83 now, but we’ll have that memory forever.

I've always loved this period of Bentleys, the Continental R/T and Turbo R etc. Unlike today, where you see Continental coupes everywhere in London, back then Bentleys were a much rarer sight on the road. Plus, they still had that wonderful, understated, torque monster 6.75 V8 engine, with a single enormous turbo. I just think they were more special back in those days.

Beautiful car. I own a 1994 Turbo R in the same colour and leather combo. Effortless to drive. For greater urgency, try the Sport button on the shift lever. She then lifts her petticoats and sprints. Cheap as chips to insure. Maintenance is fairly high. There are plenty of independent Rolls/Bentley garages about. The strange thing is; I ride a hyper-sport touring motorcycle and travel at high speed. In the Bentley, you waft along at sedate speeds, because it's such a pleasant place to be. Yet you have the power and torque to travel at indecently high speed without any effort. The minute you close the door, and smell the leather. You become at one with the world.

I've come to this video late.... well, very late, but I just had to share my experience of owning firstly a Continental R, and then a Continental R Mulliner (a LWB version of the T Mulliner). Simply sensational cars! Although my heart lies with the R because of its slightly more understanding nature as the R Mulliner goaded you into unleashing those extra horse's. They were both things of beauty, that only ever received admiring looks. I unfortunately let the R Mulliner go for one of the first Continental GT's and I remember saying to a person that came up to me when I was in the GT, that this was "the best volkswagen I'd ever owned"... I think that says it all...

We just sold a Continental R and the dealership I work at in America, and I have to agree with what you said about everything feeling heavy. The chrome air vents, the door handles, the trunk cover, it is a true slab of traditional Bentley. That said, I personally think the generation after this specifically with the Arnage T is a much nicer driving experience, both as a luxury car and as an overtaking weapon that is still a traditional Bentley. What you said about the brake pedal certainly rang true, it is a bit unusual and difficult for me to get used to. But for £68,000, you are getting a lot of car.
@Crazy_Worlds4 жыл бұрын
This was the last of the hand built cars. It can’t really be compared with the VW Phaeton inspired Arnage. The weight, such as the bank vault doors, is part of its character, and its shortcomings are also part of its charm. But it has a presence, particularly the standard long wheel base R, which even the Rolls Phantom struggles to match. I love it!

What a magnificent looking car, I recall these when I lived in London at the time. The had a sense of STYLE and presence not seen by a lot of top brow cars then and perhaps even now, where a brutish look has replaced STYLE. Modern car makers can't seem to marry both these days, with some exceptions. On a different note the Bentley reminds me very much of the 'poor mans' Rolls/Bentley of yestayear, the Rover P5B Coupe. That Rover had (and has) just as much style and road presence as this Bentley dare I say, especially in Silver Birch over Admiralty Blue - hell even the names of the paint used evoke an era of 'pomp and circumstance' just like this Bentley. I'm sure you must have tried a P5B Coupe in the past Harry? A great series, thanks.

I remember watching a convertible blow up after fuelling up. I think the fumes were collecting in the trunk or top storage area & something ignited them. It blew out the top like a parachute & did some other damage. The mechanic that was in the car wasn't hurt though but for sure got his bell rung

only problem with the interiors of 90's cars like this is the immense steering wheel boss for the airbag - so glad they figured out how to shrink steering wheel airbag modules since then.

They did have the tech then for smaller airbag modules. These were just large.

that generation of Bentley didn't have anything as common as an airbag. A tiny butler lived in the boss and would jump out and brace 'sir' in case of an emergency

Yes. I remember when the BMW Z8 came out. What a steering wheel for the time!

A stunning ageless example of a classic motor vehicle that I'm sure it will start to go up in value 🚙. Great video as always 👍🏼

I was fortunate enough (as a Chauffeur) to drive a client's Bentley Turbo RT Mulliner back in the late 1990's. It was an absolute beast :-) still the most powerful and exciting car I have ever driven ;-)
