Here in the northern Dordogne, we get a lot of sweet chestnut, also mostly used for firewood. It turns quite well, and can give a nice finish. and when there is some grain twisting, can give pretty patterns. Problem is, that BIG pieces are very rare, as they coppice about every 20 years, so nothing gets very big. which limits bowls to about 5-6'' The horse chestnut piece here, is very pretty, far more so than the immature sweet chestnut I get to play with. I'll have to keep an eye out for some horse chestnut, just in case any is available to scrounge a few pieces. .

What a great looking bowl. I really liked that you turned it 'sideways' instead of the usual straight down the tree. It gave it such a beautiful pattern that i wasn't expecting. I get mesmerised watching and end up not doing other things i should be doing. You really are a true craftsman and artist Harry. Even though i am now 70 i have many fond memories of playing Conkers. I was such a tomboy and loved nothing better than to climb trees so my brother and other friends would get me to climb high to try to knock down bigger conkers. Thankfully i never got stuck but did fall out of a tree once. I envy your ability and talent to produce stunning works of wooden art. Thank you Harry.

Thank you for sharing your memories Shirley and your kind comments. 😃🌰 I too loved climbing trees and throwing large sticks in the local park to dislodge more conkers. Unfortunately the game is deemed to dangerous in schools, H&S gone mad but we can always sneak a private game in the garden. 😃👍 If you haven't already, don't forget to subscribe to my new shorts channel 😉 thanks for your support !! kzbin.info

Have turned horse chestnut before. If you can get a piece that is spalted the appearance is even better. Shades of dark blue and greys are present. If you have some spalted timber and more of the chestnut, you could try putting the chestnut and some turnings from the spalted timber into a plastic bag and place in the ground for a few months. All goes well you'll have a very interesting piece

The grain is very beautiful! I love the lighter wood and this is a beautiful bowl! I've never played conkers but I'm interested in knowing what it is!

Horse chestnut is what the timber is.

Hi Julee and thank you. Conkers is a game played with the seed (the conker) that falls in Autumn 🌰 (looks like this). You make a hole through the centre and thread a shoe lace through, knotted at one end, so the conker hangs down. You then take it in turns to hit the opponents conker with yours. The winner is the one who cracks and breaks the others conker. (The winners conker is then given a ranking of 1 and this increases with more victories). There are lots of other rules and ways to make your conker stronger - pickling, baking, keeping stored in the dark etc....
