Woodturning - Big Oak!

Happy New Year to everyone watching! What a crazy year it has been, thank you all so much for your support throughout 2021, 2022 is going to be even bigger, stay tuned for more amazing projects!
To kick start 2022 I decided to crack open this Holm Oak that I've been eyeing up for sometime and it seriously didn't disappoint. The colours of the wood are just amazing, especially with the added Spalt lines. The piece was sanding to 1000 grit and finished with Sanding Sealer.

Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

Yes, It does have the characteristics of a Bog Oak log from the outside, but it is Holm Oak. Happy new year! 👍

You must have one beast of a lathe to turn oak like that. I have access to all the oak I could ever use but most of it is very dry and hard to turn. However you turned that chunk into a beautiful piece 👌.

Thanks FlyeLife. Very true, oak is very hard, tough on chisels and makes fingers and hands tired. The piece I used was quite wet and I am very pleased with the result 😀 HNY 🎉🎉

Very nice piece ! How is it that the wood takes those whitish shades ? Is it usual for oak or this one has something special ? I was lucky to see pieces made of an oak which had been underwater in a marsh for a century, the wood was intense black !

Very nice piece. How do you keep the oak from cracking while it's drying though. Every oak bowl I turn ends up splitting along the grain

Thanks for watching! I usually don't have issues with oak cracking while drying. But the best technique to stop cracks is to slow the drying process down, place the finished piece in a box of shavings. This should help! 😄👍
