Nah man at the end he explained that he made it entertaining on purpose so people would watch it. He then revealed that the thing spreading the mucous-monster condition wasn't spores, but rather those static blip things in the footage. So basically the doctor failed; scientist guy has successfully spread the condition by making people watch. That's what I understood from the ending anyway.

I'm probably be only person on the planet who didn't hate this episode, to be honest. That's mainly cause I like darker endings and have been wanting something like this for a while, and I like fourth wall breaks, the atmosphere was creepy, and of course I love Reece Sheersmith, and for the most part the concept had potential. There are many things I'd change though, namely what the sandmen actually are. I personally think it should've been something more sinister, like, the sleep pods actually accelerate your timeline and the people had been left in it too long and they died and turned to ashes but got reanimated for sci fi reasons and stuff. Idk, just a thought.

I don't usually comment on videos but when I watched this episode for the first time I had almost the exact same reaction as you. However, I watched with a friend a few days later who hadn't seen it yet and the whole point of the episode hit me. It helps to watch the last scene once or twice to get it -- essentially this episode is breaking the fourth wall. The guy with the glasses is transmitting this "entertaining video" to us, the viewers, with the blips and the static in it which he reveals is the REAL process to turn people into dust monsters. He further goes on to say that you should show this to your friends and family, which is very clever here because if you get the twist, then it is something you would want to show to other people, which would in turn change them too. Overall though, the rest of your analysis is spot on. I would have to rate this one of the better endings we've seen in awhile; I really liked how the writer implied that the dust monster knows that there are people out there who watch The Doctor in his adventures and that we are now all infected.

Yes, this story sucked... big time. While I don't mind the idea of a "found-footage" episode the actual premise of the story was ridiculously absurd. Monsters made from eye sleep gunk? Seriously?? Wasn't there anyone to tell Mr. Gatiss, "Um, sorry Mark but that's a really stupid idea". It would have made more sense that due to the lack of sleep, peoples' subconscious thoughts don't get the chance to express themselves and so these subconscious thoughts build up and take on a life of their own. I know it's similar to "The Mind Of Evil" but at least it makes more sense and is potentially a lot scarier. I came up with that alternative idea almost as soon as the episode was over... and I'm not a writer! Come on Doctor Who staff... sit down and think things out for God's sake.

Being awake all the while would be terribly dull, you'd have to force yourself to find something to do while waiting for stuff to happen...much more than we already do. Relaxing wouldn't exist, it's nice to just not do anything, being productive is overrated as doing all the time just means you'll eventually just pump out garbage through lack of caring. I hated this episode. Mark Gatis has been a real disappointment in Doctor Who in my opinion, the flare of the first few Sherlock seasons seem to disappear when he writes for Doctor Who. Unlike Steven Moffat who can occasionally write a gem, Gatis seems to consistently write poor episodes.
@morphman866 жыл бұрын
It was not made for entertainment, it was made entertaining so people would watch it. It was made to spread the "contagion". Also, Gatiss wanted to write a Pemperton-esque story, something he had wanted for a long time but never had the medium for before. When Moffat gave him the green light for it, he saw only one option: To get the actual Pemberton to play the main baddie of the story. I thought it was brilliant, from that perspective, even if the final result turned out a bit iffy. At least it was better than when Pemberton tried to write a Legz Akimbo story.

My least favorite thing about the science fiction genre is the continued trope of "science gone too far" or "the hubris of man." Don't get me wrong, it can be done well. But aside from being overused, it also just falls flat most of the time, trying to make a case against modern technology that in reality is completely harmless. Why try and send a message that sleep is necessary? Imagine how quickly the world would advance if we didn't need to sleep. These science fiction tropes always do the same thing. Advocating against something by introducing a problem that is only tangentially related to the thing they are trying to convince us is bad. Show: See what happens when you try and fight against nature? You suffer the consequences! Me: Ok but that has nothing to do with fighting nature and everything to do with you making machines that literally turn people into monsters. Same thing with that cyberman episode "Age of Steel." Show: See? You people all rely on your cellphones too much, always staring at your screens. It made it easy to mind control you and march you to your own deaths. Me: Ok, that has less to do with the cellphones specifically and more to do with the evil robots killing people. The earpieces with the mind control could have just as easily been replaced with pacemakers or insulin pumps. Are you saying we shouldn't use pacemakers, or have any technology that will improve our lives? Imagine if someone made a sci fi story about "the dangers of antibiotics." And it was about how the continued use of antibiotics only made the virus stronger in the long run. How using penicillin was "against nature" and using medicine was "science going too far" or "the hubris of mankind." Try and see how well that story plays out. Humans are good. We make good things. I'm sick of hearing about how inventing an electric juicer could wipe out the human race.

Probably way too late to comment on the sleep issue, but I'm going to anyway. There are things you can do in dreams that you just can't do in reality, and those are experiences people would miss out on if they couldn't sleep anymore. Your problem, Harry, is you expect too much. You are bound to be disappointed. Character development? Really? You say you've caught on that the guest cast exists only to be killed off. And yet remain hopeful that they will actually be people. I will confess something here that I have not told my own viewers: I attempted to watch this program three times. And three times failed to make it through without dozing off. I don't blame the program. I once slept through a Rolling Stones concert. (And that is something I did tell my viewers.) I appreciate, though I know your task is futile, that you continue to hold this program to higher standards. Myself, I've given up and enjoy it for the superficial charms.
@HarrysMovingMedia9 жыл бұрын
+mickeleh Ahh, the beauty of subjectivity. Firstly, thank you for an excellent, constructive and helpful comment. I will try and tackle this as well as I can as this is the first proper form of criticism I've received. I know that we don't know each other for one thing, and that I certainly do consider myself a pessimist. I think that a standard for almost everything has to be met for me to appreciate something, however perhaps you are right in saying that this is not the best thing to be criticising. Maybe my nostalgia for the Russell T Davies years has slightly blinded me when watching these newer series. You are certainly considerably older than me, and probably wiser too, and perhaps you lack the young aged spark of passion that I have for the medium itself, which isn't a problem at all, I'm just describing our difference in opinion. When you say I've caught onto characters being killed off, this was more a reference to found footage as opposed to doctor who. There are countless episodes with 45 minutes in length with great characters. You also state that my task is futile, and this is something I hadn't truly considered either, yet I don't know truly what it is. I aim to entertain and educate certainly, but I know, for sure, that my comments won't change anything. I haven't said this to my viewers either, but I do wish that doctor who would stop. I think it's either had it's time or it should go on a hiatus and return in a few years time. I somewhat doubt this would happens considering the fanbase (and I'd lose my saturday night/sunday editing ritual that I really enjoy doing) but you have certainly made me see a little more clearly into your methods of criticism of this show too, which I really appreciate. Thank you for taking the time to let me know about this, do you think I should take my criticism to another tv show/film that would entice more people to listen to what I have to say? What do you think could be improved?

I think your living in a dream land if you think that in 1000 measly years we won't need military, or religion To put it bluntly, if we don't have a Military and Religions in 1000 years someone better check to make sure we didn't all get body snatched, because we won't be humans any more. (Premature TL:DR, refutation weighed down in quality by the fact I am exausted) When it comes to military its obvious, unless the government has the ability to apply massive amounts of power when needed it is weak. Militaries are very good at this. There also nice to have when a bunch of nut jobs come in from beyond the stars and start wrecking shit (though in Doctor Who they go out of their way to show the military as pointless in reality there our best bet). There is a fundamental part of the human soul that cries out for a religion. Different religions call ot different things, I prefer the term God shaped hole, but thats because it makes me nostalgic, this whole concept is more complicated than I feel like getting into because this is already long, and its currently 2:30am as I type this, but I'd recomend seeking out, anything with Jordan Petersons name in the title, or publishers tag the man has put so much work into this concept, and he says it all 1,000,000 times better than I could. yeah i agree with a life without sleep would be awesome. some people i talked to said we would go insane if that happened, because dreaming releases the self conscious. but if that's true, we can try and do what they're doing and just compress the hours of sleep needed into like a minute eve, and we can have the minute long dreams of our lives. i also agree that i didn't walk away from this episode feeling like it was found footage. we were just seeing through the eyes of other characters the whole time! but it did make me wonder what kind of filming technology we'll have in the future. i did always use to wonder if we could sort of implant video cameras in our eyes? i know that sounds gross, but it would be quite interesting. we could literally play back every event in our lives that we ever see... and maybe we could defeat the footage of stuff that we... wouldn't want others to see, you know? but think of all the good that you could do! when you see a robbery or a murderer, you don't have to pull out your phone and start spamming photographs, because you're already filming the scene! all you have to do is play the footage back and hop there was a moment when you got a clear glance of the criminal. just think of all the youtube opportunities you could get with that stuff!

I want Mark Gatiss back now. At least he made average interesting. He experimented and found ways to make what would otherwise be average episodes of Doctor Who, very interesting. He's come a long way since "The Unquiet Dead" and "The Idiot's Lantern." We have: "Cold War," "The Crimson Horror," "Robots of Sherwood," "Victor of the Daleks," "Night Terrors," "Sleep No More," and "Empress of Mars." Are all of them superb? No. Were all of them interesting, hell yeah. Whether it was just from awkward humor, grim horror, or just plain bizarreness, all of them were interesting to me. Idiot's Lantern made me cringe in fear, while "The Unquiet Dead' showed an interesting and almost funny way of portraying Charles Dickens. "Night Terrors" made me stay awake at night, like "Sleep No More." "Robots of Sherwood," managed to recapture Moffat's fairytale-like view. "Cold War" and "Empress of Mars" are both interesting in their own ways. "Cold War" is a sci-fi, thriller drama, contained in a bottle episode. "Empress of Mars" is written in the same way, if a little less impactful and scary as "Cold War." And I just love, "The Crimson Horror." Mark Gatiss is a great writer who has a lot of potential, even if he produces average episodes. Those average episodes are interesting. He's willing to experiment. He's proven he can write a variety of styles. With a little help, I think he might be able to lead the show into good places. All fans will never be truly satisfied, so the least you can do is make it interesting to watch.

The enemy vaguely reminds me of Silent Hill. Interesting concept didn't really come through to the end when you realise that the Sand people have evolved enough to take on human form if they do return, that'd be a much better episode.

Better than season 9 opener, better than The Woman Who Lived, smart use of subjective first-person camera, especially after the denouement, the actors were a bit disappointing but at least we have an episode with an (almost) full cast of ethnic minorities, which is (for me) a very good point, there's no music (like old good times) but a bit boring in the end (I even fell asleep...). Thanks for your reviews! It's so funny to hear your cynical comments every week, so see you next week (oh, and I forgot: I really enjoyed your "Do not go gentle into that good night" video, and was astonished to see that other Whovians know what might be one of the most beautiful piece of poetry EVER :D). Best!

474 is a woman, not a man; she's referred to several times as "she". Yeah it was confusing as she looks and sounds masculine, but she's actually played by trans actor Bethany Black.

usually i really like series 8, 9 and 10, but MY GOD, THIS ONE (for me) was SO BORING and, well, maybe i'm an idiot, but my brain just got so fried that i didn't understand what was really all this chapter about. the ONLY few things i like is that THANK GOD this isn't a two parter story and that bit when the doctor says that (at least he) is part of the fourniture (i'm an idiot, but i liked that, ok?)

I hate this episode pretty bad lol. I think that the show’s opposition to a life without sleep fits with Doctor Who’s broader positions that Cybernetics Eat Your Soul and that there’s No Transhumanism Allowed-if you’ll forgive me using the tvtropes vernacular. There are so so so so many reasons I grew out of Doctor Who, but these tropes are one of the biggest ones. Personally... I’d be happy to sleep *less*, but I do enjoy sleeping overall. Broadly though, I’m very open to the transhumanist ideas that shows like Who spurn.

Shame this episode didn't come out untill season 9 when it could've come out in season 2. Shame back then Russel T. Davis. didn't like it even though he was the one who gave Mark Gattis a BET to make an episode around something or someone called Mr. Sandman. Shame.

I don't think any of it is real... I think the Doctor and Clara landed in the middle of a futuristic horror movie... And they just became part of the plot even those soldiers I think were actors...And they just went along with whatever the Doctor and Clara was saying because they just thought it was part of the movie... I can prove that it was all fake... How is it that none of the other dust conglomerations can speak but suddenly the guy who made the whole Morpheus program can speak just before he turns into a pile of dust...? Like really? Like it's obviously just some futuristic horror movie..so you're telling me that everyone who watches this movie has the signal or whatever implanted in their brains to turn them into these dust monsters... So how come Clara never turns into a dust monster...? Or any of the soldiers for that matter... Apparently some of them had been using it for years... And all other humans who were using it... So????

The prosperus human culture you want won't happen in doctor who. Humans in DW are very racist against other species, and even untill the end of time, they have several qualities, (religion, military) throughout their history.

The ending really confused me.
@overlydramaticpanda4 жыл бұрын
The ending basically puts the entire episode into context by breaking the fourth wall and making the viewers part of the story. Basically, the entire episode was faked in-universe by the scientist guy with the glasses. The sand monsters weren't spread through spores like they'd been saying throughout the episode. Instead, it was spread through the static that kept appearing throughout the episode which we (as real life viewers) just kind of accepted as a style choice because of the found-footage format. The villain's whole plan was to infect us (the viewers) by making an entertaining story and exposing us to the static. It's still not really a good episode but the ending does help to save it from being absolutely awful, and it's definitely a neat concept they were going for.

5.5 good idea poorly done agree but I still hate it pretty bad
@captainclipy62365 жыл бұрын
So many of your arguments are ridiculous or nit picky. They used Mr Sandman because the monsters were created from sleep. As for an in-universe explanation, it’s just like how companies these days use nostalgic songs to lure people in to watch their movies/shows etc. These videos continuously get more painful to watch.

Agree, nice Idea but weak execution, i dislike the ending, reminds me more of the ending of a horror tale than a Episode of Dr. Who
@Mrcool2109 жыл бұрын
This is definitely a review where i couldn't disagree more. Sorry dude, but i fucking HATED this episode. For me it was worse then kill the moon, i understand the idea behind it and it could have worked, but a good idea with terrible execution is still terrible execution. Not only did i find the story itself to be irritating, pointless and just all around badly written, the explanation for the whole "Found footage" angel made no sense,(the sand was recording their vision?) not only that, they say in the episode "Oh the guy who hated morpheus, he never went into it so there arn't any angels from his perspective, to which we then see shots from his perspective immediately after, Plus the doctor never went into it either, how are we getting shots from his perspective? Also, apparently mark gatiss forgot about the first rule of writing, show don't tell. Cause he kept fucking cutting to that guy who would then either tell us the insanely obvious or something thats just about to happen, like when we see the first soldier get killed, then it cuts to him going "he was the first to die" No fucking shit Captain Obvious we didn't just see him die or anything like that. The story doesn't even have an ending for fuck sakes. It justs stops. I would go into further detail but i don't want to rant anymore about the episode. I'm glad you liked it more then I did, in face I envy you. But dear god, No I hated the episode with every fiber of my being, It got a 0 from me. it was that bad. Once again, no offense to you man, just voicing my opinion, all be it very angrily.
@HarrysMovingMedia9 жыл бұрын
+Mrcool210 I don't normally respond to big ranty comments but you are a frequent visistor and have been subscribed to me for ages so I'll give you a proper response. As a fan myself of the horror genre I liked the technicalities and lengths this episode went to, in order to make it different, different being the key term here, because the lack of diversity in the episodes so far haven't exactly hindered far from the usual bollucks the show produces, in my opinion. When you say that there are shots from the Doctor and that other guy's perspectives, I can tell you that there aren't, I watched through the episode twice so I'm pretty sure they weren't included. It is quite disorienting because of all the different perspectives we unfortunately see so that may be why you came to that assumption. The ending can definitely annoy, I can empathise with you there. Unfortunately though that is the nature of found footage films/stories, and if you dislike it that's fine, it's just you have to throw out the idea of a "good story" to establish the reality of the events (and all that bollucks) as opposed to concluding the story like a normal story would. It's almost like documenting a real event as opposed to a piece of fiction, despite this episode obviously was fiction and the episode failed on that front. Also understand I didn't truly "enjoy" the episode. I did mention at times the episode had elements that were very dull. It might not have been completely enjoyable but it kept me interested, and I think that contributes to a certain extent to my overall opinion. Finally never apologise for having an opinion dude. I'm not gonna get all upset and flabbergasted because somebody can think for themselves or because I disagree with them. Your points are very much valid, but again that's the beauty of subjectivity. Apologise if you make a mistake sure, but trust me I will NEVER be offended by somebody's opinion. I'm not some religious nutter, I'm just a bloke with an opinion, just like you. :)
@Mrcool2109 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you're like that man, how we can discuss the episode and not get angry with each other for having differing opinions, i see your points, they just wern't enough for me to enjoy the episode but i'm glad they were enough for you to get some level of enjoyment out of it (as opposed to when i was watching it where i was screaming at the tv the whole time) I'm usually not that angry i swear XD. But its comments like that and the fact that you have differing opinions and can accept differing opinions from your viewers that makes you one of my favorite youtube channels :)
