I always felt like Ashwin was made to sit out on lot of away tests because the batters were not doing their job. Paying the price for someone else’s fault is a tough thing to do. I’m amazed at his resilience to stick around for so long. If selection was made on bowling merit alone, then he would have played at least another 20-25 more tests by now.

Especially in Kohli-shastri era
@জয়78Күн бұрын
I also think so. As the batters are failing to score overseas, Jadeja has been called upon as a prop for his batting. His performance with ball overseas has not been noteworthy. But for that Ashwin had to suffer, though he himself was a very good batsman in his own right.
@arunkk004Күн бұрын
Absolutely true.. even if he is not picking wickets he is holds a 2.5 economy. Even in second test he is the second best bowler for India on a flat and pace friendly track. He may not bat 60 runs always in test, but he saves 60 runs with the ball which will help others to pick wickets! Such an underrated guy!

After India’s WC win in 2011, the main Sponsor Castrol arranged at ITC Gardenia hotel, Blore, a get together of the 2011 WC players, ex players and few of us from corporate world. I attended that meet as an invitee of Castrol coz at that time I was the CEO of a joint venture Comapny in Bangalore and we were customers of Castrol. Suddenly from somewhere Ashwin came to me and “introduced” himself in a humble manner saying “ I am Ashwin” . I was completely blown off. Here is a player, maybe an emerging one according to him, who with all humility comes and introduces himself to a completely unknown person like me. Ashwin, I have never forgotten that and I salute you by wishing you the very best in your life. Indian cricket needs your fantastic cricketing brain. I hope to cross lines with you one of these days.

Ashwin is the epitome of a thinking cricketer. In Harsha sir’s oft used words he embodies a thinking cricketer. The time chosen by Ashwin to retire could not have been more prudent. He saw Jadeja ensuring his name on the team sheet by his batting at the Gabba. Even in Sydney he might have seen indications that even if 2 spinners play, Sundar might be preferred. Rather than spending another 3 weeks especially Christmas and new year away from family, he would rather spend it with them. He also saw, having lost his place in white ball cricket that the next red ball assignment was in England where again others will be preferred, he decided to unencumber himself from the demands of international cricket and focus on the several other areas of his busy life. Very astute and timely decision.

Great tribute Harsha - you are like the Richie Benaud voice of INDIAN cricket. Following this game for 43 years, even I second what you said on Ash. My tribute for ASHWIN : The name says it all, Ash-WIN. He was born to win games for Team India. He is the only TN player to play more than 100 Tests and like the other numerous records he has, we can sing a lot of praises in him. My initial reaction listening to the news of his retirement - I think it is more of the treatment that Ash has been getting especially playing overseas - is what made him take this decision. He is seen more of a net bowler overseas and blame it on the three idiots (Selectors, Indian Team Mgmt and Indian Captain) for the freakin respect he is getting inspite of performing consistently. Rohit or Kohli, inspite of their freakin performances would always feature in the 11, because one is current captain and another one is former captain. Has Australia dropped someone like Lyon ? He is getting the right respect in always getting selected in the 11, inspite of any conditions. That is the sort of confidence, Ash has been badly missing from the 3 idiots for a long time now. Anyways, Ash has made the decision and we all know he is a sensible person and team player. I personally would have treasured Ash for another 2 more years, if not like Jimmy Anderson playing for eternity and still performed. From India perspective Ash deserved to overtake JUMBO or at least finish with 600 wickets. We all know that records have followed Ash and he necessarily haven't chased them. Also for a thinking player like him, I would have loved to see ASH captain TEAM INDIA at least once. A cricketing legend - to come from TN and play more than 100 Tests in itself is a herculean achievement. And that too for someone with the kind of bowling average that Ash has got after playing 100+ Tests, he is going to leave a big void and hope Washy (another TN player) is able to achieve at least half of what Ash did. Even he needs to be given proper chances for that. I really don't want to talk or comment on the petty politics of team selection when it comes to picking TN players in your eleven. Living in Sydney, I was hoping to see Ash play for one last time here at SCG where he and Vihari showed the survival of fittest story in hanging on for a draw with their stern fight at the crease. I should not be saying this, but slowly I am losing interest in the way TEST cricket is played these days, especially TEAM INDIA senior players. Like a bunch of fools, we keep watching some of these hyped superstars make the same mistake again and again. If Rohit and Kohli can play in the 11 all times, I thought someone like Pujara if not Rahane deserved one final chance to play in the Land Down Under. I hope senior players (esp. ROKO) also soon realize that they have been mere liabilities playing in the 11 and bow out of this TEST format with the same grace like what Ash did. TEAM INDIA after losing the home series against Kiwis and the way they went gaga avoiding a follow-on is throwing ALARM BELLS and we definitely need both RETROSPECTION and INTROSPECTION. Coming back to Ash, he seems to have introspected his position smartly and appreciate his spirit in bowing out with grace when he was still performing. As Ash said, he will be even more busy with PERIYA stories and will keep us all engaged. Hence it is TEAM INDIA who is going to miss ASH and ASH is like a family member to the rest. Well done Ash in your cricketing career, we from TN in particular are very proud of what you have achieved. SKY was the limit for you but you drew your end line and did well in the 20000 feet sky-dive jump. Come back home and TN blokes, get the THARAI THAPATTAI ready and it is WHISTLE PODU time for our Chennaite REAL HERO !!!

Forget a Chapter...its more than a book !! Ashwin was US playing the game. His YT channel proved it further. The excitement and love he had for the game, the desire to win was paramount. The respect we see in the eyes of the Juniors for Ash, not intimidation or fear, just respect...it speaks volumes. After the NZ series, we knew if anyone in the team was hurting the most, it was Ashwin. Bumrah will be India's greatest Test player ever when he retires, but until that no one comes even close to Ashwin. And he does not require paid campaigns or fanbases in social media to say that. His performance answer everything. In my ideal future, I see Ash joining the team as a Spin bowling mentor ASAP. Sundar, Kotian, Sai Kishore and others in the coming generations need him immensely.

I think Ashwin decision came with the realisation that : a) he was not getting younger b) Washington Sundar might build a good career if he vacated the post c) another new & young spinner / cricketer can play, after Ashwin's retirement. This decision has elements of reactivity, proactivity and taken foreseeing the future of India's test cricket. A thinking mind like Ravi Ashwin has taken a "selfless" decision and like a great champion has left the stage on a high. Thank you Ravi Ashwin Note : personally, feel, deep down......Ravi Ashwin could have got a better farewell.....yet not all things in cricket can be scripted, just like life.

We will see more of Ashwin in the days to come. He will make a great coach for CSK and Indian Cricket Team. His class, temperament, knowledge of the game and the skill is unparalleled.

Ashwin Retires from International Cricket! Did not see that coming! One of the greatest of all time, possesses an outstanding cricketing brain. Was not a real fan of him when he started but the way he had evolved was awesomely inspiring. I think in India bowlers dont get the praise they deserve. The way he plotted against Smith over and time again was just stunning to say the least. Looking forward to seeing him in his brilliant podcasts of Kutty stories. Ravi Ashwin, A legend!
