I think one of my favorites bits about these videos is how John relates the plots to other media, be it The Twilight Zone or a Shyamalan film or a short story. It's easy to write off Goosebumps as "just kids books", but it's cool seeing how so many story archs get reused and reimagined throughout history.

I always found Ghost Next Door to be pretty similar to The Others. Spoiler warning for The Haunting of Bly Manor: . The series has one of the best portrayals of 'character has been dead the whole time' to me, and it's because it does it completely differently from other versions. The character who's dead can be seen by everyone, so she seems like just another normal part of the cast. But there are still signs of it - like she never eats or drinks anything. It's so good and the reveal CRUSHED ME.

The shadow should have been her family trying to contact her and tell her to move on and join them.
@trentsalyers91162 ай бұрын
No I disagree, that wouldn't have been scary, I like the idea of an evil shadow spirit trying to kill the living, but if it turned out that the shadow had started the fire and killed her family and her, hoping to turn her into a shadow as well through manipulation, that would be scary.
@Emily-xk2du2 ай бұрын
I was thinking it could have been her repressed guilt over her and everyone dying and realizing it's "her fault" determined to keep her there forever and punish her by also killing Danny, but that may be a little Much lol. I do like the idea of there being no antagonist, the shadows are her family trying to reach out to her but she can't accept they're dead, and Danny has to be saved from a situation that was pure accident and no evil beings with a plan behind it.
@tictacmothma2 ай бұрын
Too obvious. The "already-dead" theme is a very old one, and the older books and shows did just that. I'm old, and most of the shows I watch are from the 1950s. This was a very common plot back then. The main character who doesn't know they are dead would spend the whole show running from an enemy only to find out in the end that if they'd trusted that enemy they would've found peace or whatever. Blah. Boring. Predictable. Same ol' same ol'.

I'm kind of surprised that, for the conclusion of The Ghost Next Door", Stine didn't just do the obvious thing and make the shadow some kind of personification of Hannah's loneliness? The fact that Hannah feels isolated and alone is kind of a major component of the book, and her redemption comes from saving Danny's life so it seems like having the shadow be some kind of tulpa made from Hannah's negative ghost emotions who encourages her to let Danny die so he'll become a ghost and she won't be alone any more seems like the most direct way to tie the entire story together? It's certainly a less complicated and baffling explanation than making the Shadow Danny's proto-ghost who wants to swap places with him after he dies, or something?

I like to think the darkened daytime shots were a stylistic choice. It looks like nighttime without sacrificing visibility, but it also gives everything a kind of eerie glow that makes it feel a bit more dreamlike. I think it works perfectly with the Goosebumps vibe.

I'm super unlucky. By the time John gave his two cents about whether or not you have bingo, I only had two squares.😅

41:11 BINGO! I got "Chapter cliffhanger was a lie," "Red converse cover," "Sibling prank," "Outdated pop culture reference," and "Bad bully dialogue.". I already love your Goosebumps videos as they are, but the interactivity of the bingo card just makes it that much more fun!

The free space in the card should be "chapter cliffhanger."

The ghost next door is one of my favourites episodes. I'm 32... every once in a while I revisit it. And I still cry at the end.

Ohhh man whether it’s in its own separate or included with others I am SOOOO looking forward to Werewolf of Fever Swamp. It was my first Goosebumps book and has always been my favourite

The Ghost Next Door always gets me teary eyed, both the book and the show. And got me again when they're reviewed here at the same time.

So happy to see another one of these. I love these videos so much. Amazing job as always! I didn't get a BINGO in either of them but they were both off by one. (First one needed a legit scary moment or real horror mistaken as a prank, and second needed red converse on the cover.)
