So in the Fear Street books Stine is CONSTANTLY brutally killing off pets. It's an appalling amount of animal death. Since that series is for teens, I guess he could get away with it more than in Goosebumps. ANYWAY love these videos! Happy New Year!
@chillcreep492618 күн бұрын
I have to wonder whether this reflects Stine's own feelings towards household pets (unlikely, but possible) or if it is just a simple and quick way to get the reader emotionally invested. "Save the Cat" theory and all.
@RunicSigils18 күн бұрын
@@chillcreep4926It's almost certainly 100% the latter because it's just easier to kill off a pet in a story to give emotional value than it is to flesh out a human character to make you care, then kill them off. Most people understand animals are innocent, and therefore it immediately affects them without knowing the animal but you have to know the person to give a shit.
@jackiebee18318 күн бұрын
@chillcreep4926 I do think it's often an instance of a quick, easy way to have something horrific happen especially early on in a story. But then I agree with John that you have to wonder about him writing a protagonist who wants to see a cat flattened. I suppose the character in the book was a rather mean-spirited prankster, so maybe it just folds into that. In this book anyway.
@SNP8018 күн бұрын
@@jackiebee183I feel like older horror movies/books really leaned into the dead pet/animal trope to a fault. Maybe it was easiest to establish fear, but it seemed so unnecessary at times that I’m thankful more horror has moved away from it. Shows and movies with cats in particular used to play it for laughs when a cat would get injured and make a screeching sound too. I wonder if his writing was a reflection of the times more than anything else.
@jackiebee18317 күн бұрын
@SNP80 Totally agree. It was a much more prevalent trope in the past and I'm also glad it's less so now. Plus, with how quickly Stine was churning out books back then it was probably an easy go-to for him, same as a raspy voice, dream sequence, any of the bingo squares. It just aged particularly not well. You bring up an interesting point about the "comedic cat screech." Maybe by 90s standards that comment by the protagonist was supposed to be...funny? Like his dad hurting his foot with the kettle was hysterical apparently? Maybe I'm not fully grasping that without more context, but either way, my how the times have changed!

Honestly the adult perspective hearing "we studied witches in social studies" and knowing that had to have been the Salem Witch Trials gives Judith a really chilling factor. It's insane that, with all the horror tropes associated with Goosebumps, Judith becoming this unhinged stalker is the most genuinely chilling I've found the series. Also Young Guv has released a couple of bangers.

If I remember correctly, Werewolf of Fever Swamp was pretty damn legit. Love this series, it's actually really nostalgic and hilarious. Keep it up John! 🤘

"Be Careful What You Wish For" not only has my favorite Goosebumps cover for many years but it was also the first one I ever read (yeah, the fuschia was a net positive for 9 year old me).

The Piano Lessons one was the first one I ever read 😅 freaked me out bad

Piano Lessons is one of the most underrated books/episodes imo for all the reason you pointed out and more. The fact the parents are reasonably supportive, the creepiness of the school, Dr Shreek & the mystery of the Ghost in his house.. also the book is one of the few times to have a poc character in there. Just absolutely great unsung horror

You are literally the perfect amount of cheese to be doing this. Just enough to fit in with goosebumps. I mean that in the most respectful and appreciative way. I love this
