at about 30 seconds in the engine was running backwards? (on the first start),,they will obviously run both ways, how would this affect the driving?

It actually cannot run backward since it is a four stroke, the spark was accidently left fully advanced causing the spark to fire on the compression stroke, what you saw would be the furthest it can possibly move backward. The transmission was a single band elliptical, so it's forward speed is almost exactly as fast as backward.

+12799MaDeuce There are a pair of planetary spur gears running around a large annular ring gear inside the clutch drum of the belt pulley on the other side of the tractor. I think if you forget to retard the timing they will try to run backwards.

Yes it will attempt to fire in reverse from time to time.
