I walked 1200 miles for my 70th birthday. I did no fitness training but for 18 months before the walk I stopped alcohol, ate one meal a day with lo carbs and cut out processed foods and vegetable oils. I also meditated on the emotions I would experience by walking on my own. I enjoyed every minute of the walk and had no joint pain or blisters

About 3 months ago I quit drinking, started keto, fasting, and took my workouts more seriously at the gym. It was by lucky happenstance that keto was apparently helping me with quitting alcohol, unbeknownst to me. 😂 Completed my first 48 hour fast on Monday, started at 245lbs 3 months ago, now down to 214. Planning my first fast beyond 48 hours in June, shooting for 72+ Thank you for all the great info, it’s really helped.

This is why I really like this man! I once had an argument with a psychiatrist along those lines. I told her that fish oil improved my mood. This was long before research supported that link. She was insisting it was placebo and I shouldn't take it. I had to point out that if it was placebo, did it matter if it was working with no noticeable side effects, especially given research suggested at that time that the long term effects seemed to be healthier joints and heart. I asked why on earth she was telling me to stop taking something that was doing no harm, likely having a positive affect on my health and even if only by placebo was helping my mood? She just looked at me as if I was strange, it was clear she just couldn't wrap her head around the concept.

Ended up divorcing after 23 years of ALL kinds of abuse, AND a life filled with confusion, dysfunction and the blame game, EVEN the death of our oldest daughter, Lisa, which was the catalyst of all off the above! After Several re-hab stints things really didn't change that much. I agree with Sigmond Freud:"BEFORE you go diagnosing yourself with anxiety, depression or ANYTHING, make sure you are NOT surrounded by as_-hol__! It IS a "lifestyle!" There is a direct correlation between trauma and addiction. Trauma is always at the root of addiction.
@serenitygoodwyn
@serenitygoodwyn Жыл бұрын
Trauma may be necessary but it's not necessarily sufficient to cause addiction. There are lots of people who experience trauma who don't get addicted. Certain genes have been linked to a predisposition to addiction and given the work Dr Palmer is doing it looks like underlying dysfunctional metabolic health is also a predisposing factor (and those two things may be linked). Someone with the wrong genes and metabolic disfunction who has also suffered trauma is much more likely to end up addicted than someone without those underlying factors that experiences the same type and level of trauma. I'm not an addict (unless you count caffeine) but I have Bipolar. As with addiction you would be hard pressed to find someone with Bipolar who hasn't experienced significant Trauma. However, the ketogenic diet manages my bipolar far more effectively than medication or counselling ever did, my story is looking less and less unique and there is even some preliminary research showing benefit in drug resistant bipolar/schizophrenia now. Addressing the underlying metabolic issues, seems to give the trauma less of a hold to cause havoc. It's not a cure but it beats the alternative therapies by a mile for me.
@qwertyuiop-ke7fs
@qwertyuiop-ke7fs Жыл бұрын
My theory is that trauma causes chronic glutamate overload in brain and alcohol rescues brain from glutamate overload by blocking GABA uptake. Taking GABA regulating supplements like taurine, NAC lead me to believe this is what it's about. However the root of even that may be as palmer says here metabolic. But I also think there's a priming stage where the environment is unstable and the child is setup to have glutamate more than GABA. Like every KZbin comment I provide no evidence or justification for my strongly held beliefs on this complicated and likely intractable matter.

I’m one of those people that actually gets improved mental clarity from alcohol (unless I go way overboard) and for years I have wondered why I feel like alcohol switches my brain on. It’s so nice to finally have an answer. I do think I have insulin resistance although my lab work was always fine, I don’t handle sugar and carbs well at all. Strangely enough I had to quit drinking alcohol entirely due to long Covid. Even a small amount of alcohol will bring on my Covid migraines, stiff neck, sinus problems and relentless neurological inflammation.

i've been a functional alchoolic, 57 yo. i was first drunk at a new year's eve party, when 12 yo. and I now finally undestand WHY and HOW is that i could not overcome this unstoppable desire to drink up until lately. i now understand that, as a child, i was already severely dysfuncional in mitochondrial metabolism, constantly brainfogged, morbidly shy and sleepy... guess what my diet was?!? all carbs and dairies. so that first booze episode, showed me an entirely different perception of life .. i was "alive and happy" for the first time in my life... and so i fell in the booze-trap head first. i've been keto now for 15 years, and helped a lot, but as chris explained, being overloaded with ketones, i now need a lot less alchool to get tipsy or even blackout if not careful. discovering methylene blue was a HUGE step forward, it fixes mitochondria activity and drinking is not necessary anymore to function properly in every context of life.

I was drinking 1.75 liters of liquor everyday. No one ever knew by looking at me. I looked fit but I was very sick and dead inside so no amount of money or anything could help me. I have been sober 6 months and feel depressed still. Yes, my entire family are alcohlics. I want to know if my brain will return to normal. I’m going to say after a few bouts with things in this life. I find that RESULTS are rewarding. It doesn’t matter if it’s steroids or some drug with a definitive effect that is absolute in it’s altering of one’s state. Meaning , if I take a supplement that may or may not show results over time , my chances of being addicted to it are zero. If I take it and I FEEL it not only the same day but within hours. Or I can see and measure results by visual or statistical means, then those things become addictive. Now I’m using certain language for reasons I’ll explain at another time. So anything that alters one’s current state , either good or bad , allows one to exert control over one’s self. Control is highly addicting as well. ( try taking the remote from the man of the house ;). The act of being able to exert control over “life” or the “body” allows us to know this ..” at least i control something “. It’s not a verbal confirmation or even something the addict is aware of. This is the case with eating disorders as well. When everything else is perceived as “out of control” at least I have control over THIS. Etc. Its also a similar mental hook they use to get us stuck taking meds. “Just take this for at least 3 weeks straight to see results “. Aside from front loading being a possible option but not usually the cause , the reasoning is , anything you do for 3 weeks in a row , you will continue to do. It will become habitual. Forming a habit is easy to do in this fashion. And a lot harder to UNDO. Very good vid. 🙏🏻👍💯

Just like ANY group some ARE healthier, and can better suit your needs than others! You have to remember:" that MANY in AA AND Al-Anon ARE court ordered", (SOME ARE fresh out of prison, AND have offences that you are NOT aware of)! SOME have no REAL desire for REAL recovery, just to get their meeting check list of requirements finished... SOME ARE preditors looking for their NEXT victim for their supply for their NEXT agenda, OR need, WHATEVER THAT may be! STILL "Using people, places AND things!" I've attended Al-Anon meetings for over 30 years AND MANY "open AA meetings" to get a better understanding of the disease. I have had several sponsors throughout. SOME were very good. ONE was VERY bad! Also, ANOTHER so called colege was NOT healthy, either! BOTH "13 stepped" (13 step means have sex with, AND there IS a LOT of THAT going on in SOME of those meetings!) my husband at the time, right AFTER I kicked him out after being the "emotionally unavailable abusive person he is" (saying it nicely). Right AFTER our daughter, Lisa was murdered! To say the least, I FIRED THAT sponsor! So be AWARE! I have also sponsored some people and that worked out well... NEVER invite strangers of ANY type (AND THAT includes ANY type of gathering) to your home, that is hopefully your most safe, and healing sanctuary and haven for you OR your children (ANOTHER precious commodity in THIS day and age, especially!) You really DON'T KNOW who people REALLY ARE! I personally DON'T believe in taking children to meetings, though there IS Al-Ateen for that age group. SOME meetings offer FREE babysitting... My daughter was stalked, shot AND murdered by a neighbor that was married AND in the Navy! He ALSO stalked AND raped my college professor, AND another young woman on her way to college classes... "One out of THREE women are raped OR lives in ABUSE at least ONCE in a lifetime!" Latest stats! The "Me Too movement says EVERY women DOES!" You REALLY DON'T KNOW who your neighbors are! AA AND Al-Anon do have a LOT to offer, but REMEMBER:"Take what you like and LEAVE the rest!" THEN LEAVE the meeting! Using that positive energy for your children (if you have any), or to improve your life journey. Remember: " people are in those meetings BECAUSE they are sick AND hopefully, ARE trying to recover, AND SOME ARE sicker than others!" Some meetings ARE better than others, so use "wisdom AND discernment" when screening them, to see if they fit your needs and goals. It's NOT a "one size fits ALL," in my experience! AA is NOT the ONLY "recovery tool," though it seems to be the MOST popular (especially with the "Court system!" There IS ALSO "Smart Recovery". You can Google this information to see where meetings are being held and times available... ALWAYS "trust your gut!" AND ALL women (and men now a days too!) "need to carry a weapon AND KNOW how to use it, in the very least pepper spray and one of those high pitched alarms they sell!" Be AWARE! Be SAFE! Be BLESSED on your recovery journey and life! 💯💖🙏👆🔥💪💥💫🌴🌈🌅🕊️💞

all the theory and experiments they spend millions of dollars studying carries no weight in the real world. scientist have absolutely no clue what is takes to help someone beat addiction. People in AA actually get and stay sober, even after seeing 10s of doctors and "professionals". Even some addiction specialist praise and study people in recovery because they do not know what their doing. And all the doctors who pump out pills as a solution to addiction are a whole other story. Understanding how drugs affect cells and whatever is interesting and all, but it does not really help anyone.

My husband is a semi functional AH. The brain effects have been the most worrisome aspect of this condition, plus he is no pre diabetic thanks to beer. Our retirement plan is now null & void. He isn't even close to the man I married, reclusive, drinks in his garage. Verbal abuse and once physical. It destroys marriage and the family too. I want my life back. Married 32 yrs today and I doubt I can take it much longer. We live seperate lives so that he cannot abuse me, for my sanity. Alcohol is the devil. Way worse than any other drug bc its legal and socialized. All I have to look forward to his his likely early death or having to take care of a man I no longer love nor respect. It killed our marriage and my love for him. He will never go into treatment so I get healthier so I can leave. It's heartbreaking tbh.

Alcohol induced acetate as alternative source of fuel for the brain, -- mind-blowing! Would it be possible to acheive this with vinegar (acetic acid) instead of alcohol?
@spkt1001
@spkt1001 Жыл бұрын
Turns out that using acetate/vinigar as a treatment for alcohol addiction was mentioned in old studies :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ2xl2B9haucm5I&ab_channel=JournalofClinicalInvestigation However, acetate path seems over all an unfavorable energy path way for the brain. Apart from that it overlaps with the alcohol-acetate circuit it's unclear to me why this is unfavorable.

I drank about a fifth a day or more between the ages of 21 and 31. After 3 1/2 years of sobriety, I don't struggle and continued remission and recovery doesn't take a daily effort on my part. But I do often wonder if these ten years have left me with any kind of permanent brain damage. Most people who know we would say no and that they don't see it. But I do believe I was significantly sharper prior to my alcoholism.

I can look it up if you’d like! My niece and nephew lost their dad due to alcohol. I don’t drink and never really did but this was extremely fascinating. I just wanted to add to things running in the family and I think that has to do with the way families eat and recipes being passed down. I went to a vegan festival and a speaker said there are no bad genes, only bad eating habits and pass down recipes and that always stuck with me. Maybe there are studies on this out there and that could be one of your videos😊 Thank you for a very informative video
@fioredeutchmark

There are absolutely bad genes. People who manifest eating disorders that advocate cutting entire macronutrient sources from the diet for example clearly have ‘bad’ genetics (by way of a lack of mental capacity either through neurological disorders or psychological ones) otherwise their brains would override their illogical nonsense and get them properly nourished. Also from a professional point of view (I’m a strength and conditioning coach for a major sports team and have worked as a dietician in the past) it’s very obvious that some people have different internal chemistry from others and this is absolutely down to genetics. There are some boys for example (I was one of them) who get well over 6 feet and 200lbs by 13, if they don’t like physical activity to put on muscle then their bodies will just put on fat instead and it’s entirely down to genetics.

Rick Johnson's book Nature Want's Us to Be Fat, and David Perlmutter's book Drop Acid reveal the similarities between fructose and ethanol processing in the body, and make me wonder if, like fructose, perhaps up to 5g of ethanol might be handled in the GI tract.
