another flaw in the result-giving of the test is that probably a huge majoruty of those who take this sort of test are other musician/people who have an high interest / lifestyle that revolves arround music. Therefore, when they tell you how you did compared to others, it is not so much 'how you compare to the average person', but more like ' how you did compared to other musically inlightened people'.

I’m not a musician by any stretch of the imagination, but some of the out of tune clips totally made me cringe. And she’s right about the rigidness of the test. Some of the best music contains flaws that just come with being human.

Yes, I'm by no means any kind of musician, but I can hear the rigidity of most modern "pop", I am convinced that this is due to the strict "grid" that the music is forced into by software. Such exactness is desired in a financial spreadsheet,but sucks the very life or "soul" from music. Music is not an exact science, like math,chemistry or physics. It's an art. Art is organic not a rigid formula. Even the most "mechanical", crass commercially mass produced disco records from the 1970s have more soul that the "perfect" tracks made by the "labels" today.

Sure I could also crank out an album using nothing but my PC and my Tascam recorder. But it'll be soulless crap that I, myself wouldn't want to listen to. (but I'm sure some content starved radio station or streaming service would play,just to fill space..) Any that's why I tuned out of most modern music.

This is so wild listening to you talk about the minutiae of this stuff, because as a horn player who generally prefers to play in an ensemble, I think there’s a really fine line between adhering to the tempo and musicality. In a larger group like a concert band there’s a lot less wiggle room to play with tempo because everyone will interpret their own definitions of musicality differently. So I took a teensy bit of an issue with the way you described music as being too emotional and tactile to quantify in that way - I completely understand what you mean, but I see adhering to a solid tempo as something that not only is a fundamental building block of creating great music but can be really powerful as well. In my experience, getting to a point with your ensemble (especially a large one) where you all can feel the tempo together is a uniquely comforting feeling. I’m writing this at 1am after spending 7 hours on a linear algebra exam so I hope that was in any way coherent. (Also, I took the test before watching the video and I got a 116! I was pretty impressed with myself tbh)

I've been singing for over 70 years, and playing guitar for 67 year's. This video taught me things I didn't know. Some things you mentioned, were instinctive for me, and others I learned over the years fronting bands in my home town. Never had a lesson. Self taught, so my teacher was an idiot. So many ridiculous moments. For example, the first time someone asked what key a certain song was in, I didn't know what they were asking. Transposing keys was easy; I just didn't know what it was called. Thanks for your videos. I love them! Especially the Google translate ones. You go, girl.

Don' t love this test. Very ambiguos, for instance, in the "beat" section: some music beats on 2 and 4, some music has irregular beats. Also tuning is akward, because it is base on equal temperament: indians have way more notes, chinese culture used a penthatonic, meddle east music has totally different tuning systems, etc... furthermore there is a little bit of liberty when one performs to be out of tune to give a different feel to the melody.... The melody one, tho, kinda makes sense, really the only 100% ibjective one

My favorite class I ever took in highschool was band. I only took one year, I had never played an instrument before in my life, I had never read music outside of church where I'd just sing the melody. But it was the best class i ever took because my teacher was super encouraging and patient with me and the low brass helped me learn a lot and get better to the point i could be okay playing in public. I play piano by ear and consider myself instinctively good at music, but I am very average on this test. I agree with you that it is very Western centric. I *feel* what I play and other people who listen to my music tends to feel good when they hear it. Your point about music being culturally subjective is so very true. I doubt that tribal music in the sticks of somewhere, oh I dunno, Africa or whereever would really care about tempo too much etc etc.

Haha... :D I think the test is good to check if someone is NOT musical, as a very bad score might show that you can not do music with others, as you basically ignore their rhythm and tone - but all people around the middle should be fine And i feel (and think) that the difference between intuition (feeling the right answer) and knowing it is not as big as we are led to believe by the separation of the fields that work with the respectively chosen kind of knowledge - it might be that you schooled your feelings better than others and thus can do it with feeling, because you are just so much living it - so basically there is a point where they definately merge (if they are apart at all)

There is a famous one who litterally barely moves and Toscaniny himself said: "non rompere le balle all' orchestra" which roughly translates as "don' t stand in the way on the orchestra" (litterally it' s "don' t break the orchestra' s balls", tho).

One interesting thing that relates to what she mentioned at the end about cultural understanding is Japanese music is a lot different to any other type of music, when we listen to music we expect closure but Japanese music doesn’t have much of that and so when someone who isn’t used to it listens to it it feels incomplete. If you listen to the music in Studio Ghibli films there is a lot less of that but only because Studio Ghibli films are viewed world wide, it is basically anime’s Disney, so they make their music less aimed towards the Japanese so it is more widely accepted.

Omg I've got flashbacks to the theory part of my Grading tests (I used to play flute) I always did terribly on them bc I could never remmeber the start of the tunes that the examiner played. I think a fun thing I'd like to know is if learning an instrument can help people with learning disabilities or will it hinder them? I started playing when I was 7/8, and at that time is when your reading writing skills are kind of solidified/you should get most linguistic rules. My mum was convinced I was a dyslexic child but my teachers did nothing about it until I got to 16/17 and suggested I go get tested. Turns out I am! This has lead to fun things in adulthood like being crap on the phone and making mistakes on data entry work that only turn up when my boss looks through it and needing to leave at least 2 days for proofing anything that needs to be sent off 👍 fml (luckily this comes under "occupational health" so I've got loads of work arounds now) I'm kinda convinced that playing an instrument helped my brain connect dots in different places which helped with my overall development as a child/tween.

I'm glad you responded with a hard NO when it asked if it could predict a person's abilities. Mainly because, as a drummer, I found the tempo section super easy, but the melodic parts(two thirds of the entire test)...completely foreign.

Metronomes are a good for coordination practice. If you have a really fast flutter of notes, by slowing it down heaps you can train correct fingering into muscle memory. Then you can play it without the metronome without flailing xD

I've found it helpful for when I've been practising and running without being able to really reeling myself back in. My teacher made sure the one I used was a really loud and VERY sharp one, so I couldn't tune it out, haha.

As a dancer and a percussionist, I expected to do really great on the beat one. The choice of a beep instead of a traditional metronome tune threw me way off, and also the beeps were so loud in comparison to the music that the only way I could hear the music was to have the beeps so loud that it hurt my ears. So that didn't help at all. Also one of the pieces in the beat section was a jazz piece where one of the beeps were on the beat and the other was on the off-beat and I couldn't tell which was which because of the nature of the song. So yeah, not your finest job, Harvard.

I didn't score high enough to make the Jr. band but here I am at 74 with headphones on listening to you and running through guitar variations of Silent Night as my Solstice candles slowly burn in the darkened room. I can only say that desire overcomes perceived limitations. Not even close to professional level and never cared. I play the things I enjoy and sometime just enjoy the feel of an instrument in my lap. And yes I'm one of the weird ones who kisses guitars. There are more of us than you might think.

I think the last few Qs was to gather data rather than influencing your score. Like, they were researching whether being sung by parents affects your tuning or not later in adulthood and stuffs. I can imagine them correlating the aswers to those Qs and test results from many participants for research.

I used to play the violin. I am good at telling when something is out of tune, I am just not good at getting it back in 😂

The test does look fun, but what struck me is that IQ suggests some kind of innate propensity or talent for something - the test, however, almost exclusively examined trained skills, which you can aquire completely independently of any "natural talent" (in quotation marks because not everyone agrees that such a thing exists at all)
