Part of the reason Harvard's endowment stays large is because they are full of legacy students. Alumns are more likely to donate because they know there child will get in. I attended Harvard a few years ago, and I can attest to their financial aid. When I first started at Harvard I was just another custodian on the Janitorial staff, sweeping up halls, cleaning up trash, and solving the occasional math problem posted outside a professor lecture room, but no one expected an answer to a complex, nearly impossible problem, to come from a guy in a cleaning jumpsuit. Eventually the professor found it was me solving the math problems and told all the deans and teachers, other math professors and old college friends about me. I even met with a therapist a few times a week to talk about what is going on in my brain. Long story short, most of these kids wasted $150,000 on an education they coulda got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library.

The tuition price for low income students (like myself) is surprisingly low at tons of top 30 colleges. They want smart students, that become successful alumnis, so they have higher alumni donations. Most top colleges are need blind too, meaning that they don't even take into account your financial situation when you apply. If you are smart enough to get in, they'll figure out a way to help you with tuition. For instance, if you're accepted into Vanderbilt and your parents make less than $40,000/yr, they will offer you financial aid, and you can get anywhere from $45,537 to $71,213. These aren't loans. They are just willing to help you if they think you're a good fit for their school.
@grayalien63576 жыл бұрын
Sadie Bee the problem with this is that 40,000 is less than the average salary of a us worker. Hence let’s say that both parents work full time, and you were a good student you’d be hit with nearly a full price tuition that costs a quarter of a million dollars. this is fuckin insane for an undergraduate degree. So either your super rich or meet some kind of qualification that enables for a large subsidy.

Do Harvard professors grade on a curve? If so, I wonder what the psychological impact is on all of those 4.0 students who are suddenly getting C's, D's and F's?

raven lord a friend of mine from high school went to Harvard. Had a 99% average in his senior year. Dropped out before Christmas because he couldn't handle a C.
@ravenlord47 жыл бұрын
I would too. But I doubt my 3.1 GPA would have gotten me in. And that's the catch-22 for these Ivy League schools. Most of these 4.0 students would NOT be happy with just any grade, regardless of which school gave it to them. But if they admit 2.5 , 3.0 and 3.5 students to make a more normal distribution of the curve, then they dilute their "prestige". Still, not sure if I'd want to go to a school though where half the students have suicide hotline on their speed dial :P

Harvard (and Ivy Leagues in general) have different priorities than, say Oxford or Cambridge. Oxford still has a rather hostile environment towards its E&M (economics and management) students, with many colleges refusing to teach the degree outright (claiming it to be unethical, antithetical to academia, etc.). Meanwhile, Cambridge has refuse to build a business school at all. Looking at other disciplines, many students attend Harvard medical school hoping to receive a massive salary as a surgeon or pharmaceutical dev. The same can be said for lawyers and the Harvard Law school. On the other hand, Oxford and Cambridge tend to emphasise the pursuit of knowledge and the benefit of mankind rather than making a profit. In fact, I know from firsthand experience that Oxford tends not to encourage its students to pursue anything outside of academia or public service (even if it is to the detriment of their potential funding). I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the Harvard/Ivy League model. I'm merely highlighting that they have a different objective than their British counterparts.
@uyuman17 жыл бұрын
That explains why when I saw the series Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister it was always assumed that the civil servants are either Oxford or Cambridge.
@DOCTORKHANblog6 жыл бұрын
But that lies the differences in outlook when it comes to college. In Europe many have the two tier academic or vocational system where there's a more defined path for people when it comes to education past high school. Whereas in America college, no matter what it is, is defined as a ticket to a high paying job or an upper class life while trade schools are largely ignored.
@552mustang6 жыл бұрын
flyingphoenix113 That's really interesting. Oxford must be pumping a lot of those academic pocket-protector professor nerds then I suppose? :-P Now see I just find that humorous but my ideal heroes are those kids who did a few years in a college like Harvard then conquered the world with businesses they started. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates Mark Zuckerberg etc. That Oxford thing sounds like a useless life. Postgraduate degrees is where the "name" and "reputation" of the school start playing a role, and when you want to consider more prestigious universities.
@qazmko22 Жыл бұрын
I agree a lot and disagree a little! Yes, with engineering the GPA and Degree matter the most, and schools matters less, but I have friends in Silicon Valley that tell me that there is still a bias for "top schools" that is unspoken. With that said, unless you want to have an unhealthy work-life balance, don't work in those places. lol

If you can afford going to harvard just go to a cheap trade school instead or a cheap local community college and pick a major that's guaranteed to make a return like biochem plus premed. That way you wont have to spend your life flipping burgers everyday.

Just learn a trade man. There are other ways to success than just harvard ya know. If you're really good a plumbing you could make far more money in a year than any of the harvard graduates in thousands of dollars of debt and a useless major with zero applicability to everyday life.

My ex girlfriend went there and she was from a straight up poor family and she was almost paid to go there. Their scholarship program is really amazing. Plus when you get out having that on your resume puts you in such a ratified air. You just stand to make so much more money and have so many more connections. Mark Zuckerberg and I have a mutual friend on FB and my dumb ass only visited her there a few times, that's the kind of networking a school like that can get you.

I know someone who got accepted to USC SIMPLY because she had a relative who worked there. I don't think she got a special financial aid packet from it too (so she also didn't end up going there), but to get such advantage is unfair.

Seriously, they pay for it all. Heck, it isn't even just Harvard, it's most elite universities. I go to UNC Chapel Hill and I receive full need-based aid. I don't pay a bill, my dorm room, my meal plan, I even get a little bit to pay for textbooks. All I have to do is pay for incidentals, and they give me work study for that. I'm graduating next year with a degree in Poli and Econ with 0 debt.

DemonGrenade274 I would believe it. A bunch of spoiled kids mixing with the occasional genius that comes from the lower middle class. Coupled with the high level of coursework and the usual stresses and disorder of college life. I imagine tensions run high. I get that the endowment is cyclical, but higher education (especially postgraduate degrees) are counter-cyclical. More people get their MBAs, PhDs etc. when the economy is shitty. This is mostly due to having a larger amount of unemployed people interested in getting a postgrad degree. As for the >50% get scholarship aid, it's certainly misleading. I went to a private university and 90%+ got scholarship aid. $2,800 for $40,000 annually it's a small (but appreciated) dent.
@mememachine89547 жыл бұрын
Yeah of course it is, 50% get aid, some might literally get $1000. No one is under the illusion that Harvard is packed with working class kids.

I disagree with your statistics. The richest university in the world is Yale not Harvard. Sure Harvard has a bigger endowment but look at the amount of students they have compared to Yale. With the way you calculated it is like, I made a million dollars and I have a family of 10 vs I made $800,000 with a family of 4.
@Evili5555 жыл бұрын
bigman19916 but they still have more money so basically who’s richer the family of 10 or the family of four? The ratio is higher for the family of 4 but family of 10 has more money...

universities are vile and despicable through and through. state schools are the god damnedest of them all. they give needs based scholarships to upper-middle class girls and automatically deny genuinely qualifying underprivileged boys. taxes shouldn't subsidize institutionalized bigotry.

He did give the Harvard Crimson stats, 15% below $40,000 family income.
@collinparks64147 жыл бұрын
I wonder if part of the reason for higher income students making up a larger share of the Harvard student body has to do with the resources they had access to prior to attending. You mentioned that rich families tend to value education more. They also have the money necessary to invest in SAT prep courses and tutors, send their kids to better school districts that receive better funding, and access other materials designed to help their kids achieve the stats necessary for admission. A poorer family may value education but lack the means to provide their children with this assistance.
