First in assuming that Potter is an Anglican; second, by implying that Anglicanism is coterminous with Protestantism; and third in his characterization of the Anglican position on The "B.V.M." Sam Potter, whatever his denomination, was charitable enough to turn the other cheek, and refrain from pointing that out. As for point three: "Anglican theologians accept Catholic devotion to Mary After 500 years churches agree on the mother of Jesus ,Stephen Bates, religious affairs correspondent Tue 17 May 2005 07.07 EDT After nearly 500 years of intense division, Anglican and Roman Catholic theologians yesterday declared that one of the two faiths' most fundamental differences - the position of Mary, the mother of Christ - should no longer divide them. The move, aimed at reconciling Protestants to Catholicism's devotion to the Blessed Virgin, exemplified in thousands of statues in churches and shrines across the world, cuts across one of the more arcane disputes between the two churches, but is likely to alarm some evangelicals and conservatives. A document called Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ, published yesterday in Seattle and to be released in London on Thursday, declares: "We do not consider the practice of asking Mary and the saints to pray for us as communion dividing ... we believe that there is no continuing theological reason for ecclesiastical division on these matters." A passage from Fulton Sheen's "Your Life Is Worth Living" that I have in my library at home: Let me tell you the story of an atheist in London, England. I used to do considerable work in St. Patrick's Parish, in Soho Square. One Sunday morning I came into the front of the church to read Mass, and found a young lady standing in front of the communion rail haranguing the congregation. She was saying, "There is no God! There is too much evil in the world! Reason cannot transcend sense! It is impossible to conclude to his existence!" "Every night," she said, "I go out to Hyde Park. I talk against God. I circulate England, Scotland and Wales with pamphlets denouncing a belief in the existence of God." As I reached the communion rail, I said to her, "Young lady, I am very happy to hear you say you believe in the existence of God." She said, "You silly fool, I don't!" I said, "I understood you to say just the contrary." Suppose I went out every night to Hyde Park and talked against twenty-footed ghosts and ten centaurs. Suppose I circulated England, Scotland and Wales denouncing a belief in these ghosts and centaurs? What would happen to me?" She said, "You would be crazy! They would lock you up!" I said, "Do you not put God in the same category as these fantasies of the imagination? Why would I be crazy attacking them and you not crazy attacking God?" She said, "I don't know. Why?" I said, Because when I attack these phantoms of the imagination, I am attacking something unreal, but when you attack God, you are attacking something as real as the thrust of a sword. Do you think we would have any such thing in the world as prohibition unless there was something to prohibit? Could there ever be anti-cigarette laws unless there were cigarettes? How can there be atheism unless there is something to atheate?" She said, "I hate you!" I said, 'Now you've given the answer." Atheism is not a doctrine, it is a cry of wrath.
@albertjurcisin89443 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmicek Yeah, but denying the existence of somebody/ something requires belief that there is such a thing/ person. If so, then you are a believer, not an atheist. And it is former believers who are most angry at god, anyways. Compare: how easy it is to be angry at anti-vaxxers even without having any doubt that there is nothing substantial backing their views.
@albertjurcisin89443 жыл бұрын
@@asnrobert It is a very nicely written but highly manipulative passage relying exclusively on a believer´s perception of an atheist. For an atheist it is relatively easy to understand what constitutes a believer. What such person thinks and how it affects various aspects of their life. On the other hand I find most fascinating that believers fail to grasp the concept of atheism. Agnostic atheism, not the dogmatic and very rare version as presented in the passage. That is a true believer in God. But a straw man, nonetheless.

A morality from a god is still subjective....and in the case of many Christian religious sects, it is a moral system absolutely imposed by strength, i.e. at the threat of being sent to God's eternal torture chamber known as hell. As for your misunderstanding of secular ethics, I think you'll find that many atheists don't actually assert that objective morality exists or don't find the argument about the existence of a singular objective morality to be all that important. This doesn't mean that all behaviors must be tolerated or given equal standing though. Empathy is just one of the things that influences an individual's moral code. Bishop Barron, this might be one of your finest videos yet
@flightmasterr2313 жыл бұрын
@@russellmiles2861 What is incorrect about what the bishop said?? He IS a chaplain. Does it really matter why he's in the news now versus 7 years ago. The bishop's point is that it is logically impossible for an atheist to be a chaplain. Don't lose the forrest for the trees
@flightmasterr2313 жыл бұрын
@@russellmiles2861 I say again. You're missing the forrest for the trees. Ok, the guy was elected not appointed. Fine. He is not a new chaplain, he has been there for 7 years. Fine. These are trivial details. The point is that it's crazy to have an atheist chaplain. That's literally the point of the video and you're discussing trivia

Don’t the religious students at Harvard also have the right to seek counsel from someone with religious belief? Or to be comforted by someone who draws on a religious faith? They’re being dismissed and having an injustice done to them by the university.
@kingcobra58853 жыл бұрын
They still have that right. Harard has over 40 chaplains with more than two dozen different faiths. The Humanist is now only in charge of coordinating, convening, and leading meetings, thats pretty much all. So calm down.

From the description on his page: "Special areas of interest: ethics in technology; meaning and purpose beyond religion; existentialism and humanism in literature and popular culture; developing healthy masculinity from a feminist perspective; secular humanistic Judaism; racial justice and healing; the philosophy and practice of interfaith work." I am reminded of something a rabbi said once: "There are two kinds of Jews: those that think Judaism is all about social justice, and those who can read Hebrew."

I recently had this discussion with my 30 year old son who professes to be an atheist even though he was raised Catholic. His conversion came about when he attended college and has yet to change. The only words that I have offered to him on why having any sort of faith in his life is because of humility and gratitude as well as a sense of comfort that our Lord Jesus Christ died for us and rose up for us. We are never alone.

Have any of the supposed chaplains of Harvard given any explanation for why they gave over spiritual guidance of students to an atheist?
@WillHerrmann3 жыл бұрын
Christianity Today has an article titled “Why I Voted For the Atheist President of Harvard’s Chaplain Group”. The Evangelical author says the media has largely mischaracterized the position Greg Epstein was elected to; it’s more a chairman overseeing the administrative functions of the interfaith Harvard Chaplains, rather than presenting any sort of theological leadership. Epstein was already part of the Harvard Chaplains, and the new duties are just stuff like running meetings and being the liaison between the Harvard Chaplains and the university. Also, the author says that Epstein has been very good about coordinating interfaith events like service projects without excluding faiths with exclusionary views.

Well, this is what happens when you give things up...you lose them. Harvard started off as a christian school like all the old universities in america were. And the religious hired and gave over to non-religious and this is what you get.
